I find the best herb recipe is making compound butter infused with herbs! That way you get two use two culinary flavor boosts to upgrade any dish 🙂
We liked simple roasted potatoes with thyme or lemon thyme from our garden. They go with everything. This is the first year I have added Blend to the herb containers, and I’m looking forward to some great results. My favorite herb is dill. Dill on salmon is the best!
I enjoy using a variety of herbs on salmon.
Once upon a time, my beloved mother looked down her nose at certain vegetables. Brussels sprouts being one of them. Many Thanksgivings ago, in an effort to broaden her pallet and to avoid the dreaded green bean casserole, I dug through recipe books looking for a Brussels sprouts recipe with which I could tempt my mother.
After a lengthy search, I found THE ONE. Along with the sprouts, the recipe contained many of my mother’s favorite ingredients – 1 T. of chopped fresh marjoram, chicken broth, minced shallots, pine nuts sautéed in butter, and heavy cream. What’s not to like, right? All of the ingredients were combined in a pan and gently cooked to creamy perfection. But it was the sweet, floral flavor of the fresh marjoram that added mystery to the dish.
Since I was the cook and had already sampled the recipe, I knew it was one delicious heap of sprouts. And if nobody liked them, lucky me, because I would have lots of leftovers and I knew those sprouts were going to be even better the next day. As the serving dishes were put on the Thanksgiving table my mother looked askance at the bowl of sprouts. “Just try them, mom” I cajoled, putting a small spoonful on her plate.
After poking through the sprouts, Mom finally took a bite. I knew the combination of ingredients would get her. After chewing thoughtfully, mom looked at me and exclaimed “These are so good I could cry!”
Since then, the recipe has been affectionately named the “They’re so good you could cry” Brussels sprouts, and everyone who is lucky enough to try them, is a convert. It is now a family tradition to serve them every Thanksgiving and Christmas although our numbers are dwindling. And every so often I do tear up when serving the sprouts, not because they are delicious, but for my mother who is no longer with us at the table.
