What's the difference between fruits & vegetables?

Trigger warning: this video might cause an existential crisis of botanical proportions. Everything you think you know about fruits and vegetables will be called into question, but don’t worry – the botanists have got your back.

    Oh interesting. Pome, similar to Pomme in French (which means Apple). INTERESTING YOU LATIN, ROMANCE LANGUAGES, lol. And yet, totally irrelevant to pomme de terre which I’m sure is purely based on visual evidence and not remotely botanical.

    Almond trees: *Make fruits to disperse their seeds.*
    Humans: *Ignore the fruits and eat the seeds.*
    Almond trees: 👁️👄👁️

    Fascinating thanks! To me, this shows why it makes the most sense to go by culinary definitions when referring to food. The botanical definitions are pedagogically and taxonomically useful, but culinary definitions are best for categorizing different foods. At least in my opinion.

    5:08 my heart skipped a beat – was that a joke or a serious consideration (to crush a pit/stone with a hammer on a class plate)?

    I gosh! I really enjoyed this one! Wow, you’re so good at being engaging. I’ve been hesitant on making true science videos for a while but I think I get your process. Thanks for making this video! You’re very inspiring.

    I’m studying plant biology and it’s so fun to watch this kind of videos. Thank youu for sharing this and I hope one day I could also share knowledge to the youth, especially in terms of plant biology and inspires them too.

    This video is awesome and it made me chuckle 😜 I’m doing a Ba in Science and we’re covering plants for the next few weeks and my uni linked this video on Moodle. I can’t wait to see the fate of the broccoli. Love your other videos as well (I also want to major in genetics)

    My definition of a fruit or vegetable: Does it taste good with Nutella?
    Yes -> it’s a fruit
    No -> it’s a vegetable

  23. Dan Black on December 15, 2021 at 4:38 pm

    So, basically, even if you know the pericarp rules for classification, there are enough weird ones (like the orange and apple) that you pretty much just have to memorize them unless you have an advanced degree in botany or something. Does that sound right?

    This reminds me of the English language: there are rules, but pretty much everything is an exception. (Though from what you describe, it’s not that there are a lot of actual exceptions, just that a lot of parts aren’t what they appear to be.)

    I really like your video clip.👍👍

  25. seygra20 on December 15, 2021 at 4:41 pm

    Too complicated. I will just stick to if it has seed then it is a fruit.

    Why is an avocado considered a berry and not a drupe?

  28. atif bhore on December 15, 2021 at 4:44 pm

    I wish I learnt Botany this way in school, it would have made my life so much easier! Great video!

  30. Ecotasia on December 15, 2021 at 4:47 pm

    This was really interesting, have not heard about all the berry definitions. Botany is a topic I really need to learn more about.

    So i can take a few almonds and walnuts and bury them in the soil instead of eating them to grow trees?
