What to Start From Seed in January– Zone 6

If you’re itching to start gardening- never fear! There are a few things you can start from seed in January in Zone 6.
These are the main items I like to get started in January for my Zone 6, Ohio garden. All of these will be started indoors and then transplanted to the garden or moved to a cold frame in early spring.

I am binge watching your content like crazy. I recently moved to Toledo Ohio and will be starting my first vegetable garden. Your videos are extremely helpful.

You forgot to mention peppers! We’re south east of you and I’m anxious to get the peppers started, among others. I’m currently waiting on seeds from 2 different places for starting and will be building our light frame and table this weekend. Greenhouse is the goal by the end of the year. Btw, do you know of anyplace to get tiller radish seeds in bulk?

Last year was my first year with a raised bed. I did ok. I am learning how many things I did wrong! I am looking forward to getting at it again this year, hopefully with better luck.
Tonight I am going through my seeds and figuring out what I will be starting tomorrow! 6B zone

Adding perhaps a short video of setting up a grow light such as how much verical travel is needed as I’m rebuilding because I now want to hold plants inside several weeks longer to avoid cool temperature stunting my tomato and peppers as this year happened.
Thank you for the teaching Lady

I was told broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage for 6B start Jan 25th week…what are your thoughts on that?

  9. Leah Hill on January 20, 2022 at 6:17 pm

I winter sowed so much this year, it’s a bit of relief that I don’t have to do much (homeschooling is not going well).

I can’t afford lighting, I just have a cheap Walmart one for my succulents. can I just put it in my window? I don’t get tons of light because of the (dark winter)

    Jenna,
Thanks for the great videos! I was wondering if you or your other viewers have favorite onion varieties? It may be in another video, but apparently I need to get going on this! I am in Zone 6b.

Onions of course- also going to be starting some strawberries from seed this month.

Okay I will admit, I don’t catch everything the first time.I now noticed that your grow lights can probably reach around 15" well as for the first setup behind your left shoulder as your video beginning talking starts off.
My last spring was my first season of grow lights and seedlings after tomatoes and peppers got growing I quickly found out that 16" of travel they quickly outgrew.
Nearly complete my new grow rack with 3 shelfs and 2 for 4′ grow lights with I believe a 20" area with light and a shelf of 28" with light and on a top shelf just to finish with only sunlight as my corner of the sunroom is facing South-East and South-West with double pane glass giving lots of sunlight any non cloudy day.
I’m going to be satting better and raise over a dozen type of tomatoes and 4 type of peppers,
Seems I enjoy raising my own selection of seedlings adding so much interest to gardening.
Been watching you tube and having not seen anyone bragging for our favorite tomatoes ,My favorite tomato are "Honey Gold Hybrid" and everyone who I treated them with Honey Gold Hybrid says it’s their favorite snack. Our favorite slicer is a
    " Terra Cotta"
Know you must have tried many more than me Name your favorite slicer and little salad tomatoe.
Thank you for the teaching, Lady
Also your videos and a you tube teacher in Maryland " Gardening with Mark are the two I watch the hardest and I did like the way he plants potatoes and will be planting your " Purple Viking" but I think his planting method adding the way you prep the soil as I’m trying cover crop for my first time, I’m thinking about the deep digging parsnips and tilt ( but limited in some hog manure really early for the manure and compost mixture.
    Thank you Lady

Hello! Thanks for the wonderful videos! There are many good tips and information. Questions: Can I grow beans and
cucumbers in a small dirt patch/strip "garden bed" between my driveway and the northside of our property line fence? Have grown daylillys and iris there, but need to expand my veggie garden!

Gardening is way more than just throwing a seed in the ground to wee what happens. Just watching your instructional vids, I’ve learned about timing, spacing, zones, & more! Keep growing. Eventually your channel will get more subs because you really love and care about helping others. Respect to you! 🧑‍🌾 I’m working with 3/4 acre. You’ve given great ideas.
