Watch This Before You Buy Organic or Non-GMO Seeds & Save Money: What Makes a Seed Organic Explained

Bottom line is know the company or farm that you like for buying seeds. Support them that way. A simple stamp doesn’t mean your money goes local ‘mom and pop’ farmers. A seed from a garden seed pack will never harm you or ruin organic gardening. Know what makes them organic and whom your are buying from before you spend extra money on them. GMO seeds, on a side note, will never be in a retail seed packet.

  3. The Tinkerer's Wife on November 26, 2021 at 2:06 pm

Gary…THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I hope people take your message to heart. The money we can save by being smart shoppers when it comes to this is a lot, especially if you have a larger garden. I’ve been trying to get this same meassage across to people for years myself and people would become indignant, even though they had not done a lick of research themselves. So it’s so refreshing to hear someone else talking about this.

A FACT that people need to know is that GMO seeds are sold only for large scale farming and it is actually against federal law to sell them otherwise. GMO seed are EXPENSIVE to produce so BIG AG is their target market and has been from the beginning. There have been the rare occasions where an inscrupulous farm and feed store or other outlet may sell the in bulk to unsuspecting customers, however like you said, in packges we normally get our seeds they all are nonGMO already.

Back in the early 90s, when I started mt career in horticulture it quickly became clear that the labeling was just a come on and trying to educate the public was one of the more difficult parts of my job. It makes me shake my head how people back then and even now still are pretty paranoid, and its all because of this lack of prevelant information and actual disinformation that large seed companies and others who make loads of money off selling organic labeled items spread that keeps people in the dark. We as consumers need to be aware of the manipulatory practices of the industry, and I would say this labeling thing is a big one. I’ve seen some companies charge as much as twice as much for the same amount of seeds. Thanks again for making this video.

Thank you Kerry for this wonderful video! I have had this discussion for a good couple of years with my fellow gardeners and I’m of the same belief in mind that it’s you with regards to the organic and non-GMO situation going on with seeds. Looking forward to a new garden season and your future videos to come.

I have gardened for years and for the last ten years I did not know until this year that GMO seeds cant legally be sold in seed packets. Thanks so much Gary, great video!

  7. Mike Kar on November 26, 2021 at 2:08 pm

Hi Gary, thanks for your hard work in getting out all these wonderful informative and incredibly helpful videos. But I am puzzled by one thing and that is with all your curiosity to try new things why have you not gone into hydroponics especially in the winter months when growing vegetables is so difficult ( I live in Canada.)

  8. Lar on November 26, 2021 at 2:08 pm

I gave up "organic" gardening years ago. I do my best to not "chemicals", but there have been times when I use them to fight off pests and diseases. And I always follow directions on the label.

  9. Harmesh Clair on November 26, 2021 at 2:09 pm

So your telling us there is no difference but those “no labeled seeds” come from plants that are fed commercial fertilizers/pesticides/herbicides. Seems like you made this video to encourage people to buy seeds from you. Look its everyones choice which seeds they prefer to buy but please don’t say “there is no difference”. Organic seeds actually produce stronger plants and more nutritional fruit with less desire for chemical fertilizers.

  10. J M on November 26, 2021 at 2:10 pm

STAY AWAY from MONSANTO Company seeds. There ARE GMO’d.

  11. Ozlem on November 26, 2021 at 2:10 pm

Thank you to clear that. What do you think about strawberry bare roots? I assume it matters if it is organic or not since the plant is already developed.

  12. Rocio Silverroot on November 26, 2021 at 2:11 pm

Just as an explanation as to why you cannot purchase GMO seeds in seed packets: GMO seeds are patented. You have to purchase those seeds in bulk from Monsanto or whatever company it is and you sign a contract that means you can’t resell, or breed or crosspollinate blah blah blah. If you are not a commercial farmer, you will never run into a GMO seed.

Thanks Gary. I often buy seeds at the Dollar Tree 4 packs for $1. The selection is somewhat limited, but they have all of the basics. Do you have any thoughts on these seeds or why they are so cheap?

  18. david haley on November 26, 2021 at 2:18 pm

    Hey Gary
I have bought both organic and regular seeds. The reason for organic was I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the regular seed I agree it’s how you manage your garden. What you use to feed your plants whether it’s fertilizer or compost This past year I never used anything on my garden for pests. Just let it grow. I did plant marigolds near my tomatoes they repell tomato worms. Other than that nothing was used against pest. And I froze a lot of tomatoes this year. I think it’s how you prepare your soil. Thanks for your videos. Very informative
    David

Hey Gary i have a question lowes have live strawberry plants now how would you go about planting them now in January

  20. Tooda Doo on November 26, 2021 at 2:18 pm

Lol how can u make a seed in a damn lab and they not be gmo sir. Not up for argument either do full research on gmo and monsanto. It matters which seeds you use. If it wasn’t important the seed you use then why use gmo in the first place. God didn’t create this monsanto infected seeds. Better believe this shit matters. Stop misleading people. These seeds are made in labs. The food we eat is full of bull shit. All good at stores are damn near grown with monsanto’s since they do own most of the agricultural industry! Its all an agenda. Wake tf up ppl.

What is your take on "Heirloom" vegetable seeds?

  22. Monique Gebeline on November 26, 2021 at 2:20 pm

I like to get my seeds on Etsy supporting small business from farm growers. Especially during these challenging times.

  23. Judith Mingram on November 26, 2021 at 2:24 pm

I compare GMO or Organic to printing "Non-fat" on a pack of carrot seeds1

  24. Andrea on November 26, 2021 at 2:25 pm

GOOD GOD!! I feel awful proud that being cheap with seeds was good🥳🥳

  25. Joyce Jarmin on November 26, 2021 at 2:25 pm

People also need to understand the difference between hybrid and gmo . Also the difference between hybrid and heirloom. Thank you for this information.

  26. rosalie Thompson on November 26, 2021 at 2:26 pm

Thank you so much for answer. Waiting for the seeds I ordered from you, should be here tomorrow. Can not wait to get my lights and shelfs and get going this spring . I think I have watched your flower starting 20 times or more and setting up for starting seeds. Thank you for all you do.

Very helpful and makes sense, thank you Gary!

  28. rosalie Thompson on November 26, 2021 at 2:27 pm

Hi, could to tell me about cold stratification for perennials. Do you put package of seeds in frig or do you use wet paper towel and zip lock bag. Also, for about how long to keep in frig.

  29. S Chandler on November 26, 2021 at 2:28 pm

Several years ago I spoke to a farmer who got her farm certified as organic. She spent sound $20,000 to get the certification. If you claim to be organicallycertified you can get fined.

  30. Christopher Brown on November 26, 2021 at 2:29 pm

Your video is great. But if you have a field by your house or are driving in the county and a farmer is spraying a bunch of chemical. If you don’t by organic seed and organic food shut your mouth you have no right to complain. Any organic products purchased is a vote for organic production.

  31. Liz Palmer on November 26, 2021 at 2:29 pm

Makes sense re the seeds themselves – BUT it’s about how they’ve been produced. Doesn’t make a difference in my garden but it does where they’re being produced in large quantities. I want to reduce the use of synthetic fertilisers & pesticides across the globe not just in my own backyard. I try to buy open-pollinated varieties from small-scale organic producers

  32. Scott Wilcox on November 26, 2021 at 2:32 pm

Maybe some will interested in the what the German Company Bayer owns (The Purchaser of Monsanto in 2018). Google Bayer and check out what Seed Companies they have acquired. You are able to buy Bayer’s Roundup in one isle and seeds from Bayer in the next isle. I am Not willing to support that. That is me. That has been me for a long time. Take care of this world in your own backyard.

  33. Kelli Webb on November 26, 2021 at 2:35 pm

There are genetically modified seeds. Those are seeds made in a laboratory from other than a parent plant. Corn is a big gmo crop. There are different ways of modifying a seed.

  34. Jesus1200 on November 26, 2021 at 2:38 pm

nice, thank you for the information, God bless you and you all =D

  35. Electric BOOGEYMAN on November 26, 2021 at 2:39 pm

Hi Gary, I have a problem with my seedlings. I planted my seeds January 2nd and they sprouted yesterday. I planted them at the recommended depth of a 1/4 inch. My problem is that my seedlings are showing its fine fuzzy roots. I fear I planted them to shallow.

  36. Val Jalava on November 26, 2021 at 2:39 pm

Great video thanks for explanations makes real sense

  37. Colin Hendee on November 26, 2021 at 2:43 pm

There is some conversation that could be had about epigenetics, but yeah- you’re right.

  38. William Corbitt on November 26, 2021 at 2:46 pm

Great video! Have you done a video on how long one should keep seedlings inside before taking them out in the spring/summer?

  39. Sonja Downs on November 26, 2021 at 2:46 pm

Thank you for your video. I am sitting here going through a new seed catalog and marking any variety that is on my county master gardeners recommended variety so this is timely. I bought into the hype before learning better a year ago. Now I just want to be able to learn how to save seeds to reduce money spent.

  40. Deb Cham on November 26, 2021 at 2:47 pm

Do you have a video regarding micro greens? I’d like to grow a tray or two possibly indoors. But it seems like too many videos over complicate it. Can you use regular seeds or do they have to be specially “micro green” varieties? How do you keep from ending up with weeds if you grow them outdoors, even in a container. Because when weeds are small they don’t look much different to an untrained eye.

  41. Miss Kates Garden on November 26, 2021 at 2:47 pm

Gary thank you for all the information. I missed the tomato grow off last year. The 3 channels coming together. I hope you guys do it this year!

  42. FishyMats on November 26, 2021 at 2:48 pm

Do you think the seed from the organic grown plant would produce a more hardy plant to use in an organic garden since the plant that grew it had to grow without the help of the pesticides etc? (Truly wondering not trying to argue) Thank you for your super educational content!

  43. Enquiries Support on November 26, 2021 at 2:48 pm

If you think that seeds that have been grown with toxic chemical synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are good for you, you’re deluding yourself and your viewers. We should be supporting Organic farmers whose priority is our health and not spreading toxic chemicals on the earth and infusing plants and seeds with them.

  44. Strey R on November 26, 2021 at 2:53 pm

So if it doesn’t have gmos how are you supposed to know. And yes glyphosate does change the seed. Where does the seed come from? the plant that produced the seed. And if the plant had gmos or pesticides used on it, it does transfer to the seed

  45. Lane Tower on November 26, 2021 at 2:54 pm

What do you think about planting dried beans, lentils, peas, seeds that are packaged for eating? Do they sprout?

  46. tatatata on November 26, 2021 at 2:54 pm

I think this video is misleading and polarizing. Unless we’re talking strictly about saving lots of money, the key in purchasing seeds is not about gmo vs organic, etc, but about knowing the company. We can talk about misleading labels and trendy terminology with any product, not just seeds. Top corporations masquerade as a kazillion different pseudo cottage labels in many industries…

I don’t rely on what the big stores give as options. I choose to research and support seed companies whose ethics and practices for caring for the land and history match my own. I also look for local ma and pas. (And I’m not an extremist about it — I certainly have some big box store seeds and plants in the mix. But as I evolve as a gardener I embrace knowing the history of the plants I grow. My current favorite place to support is True Love seeds and some Etsy sellers.)

Thanks always for your videos, Gary.

  47. HR Pufnstuff on November 26, 2021 at 2:55 pm

Brave of you to tackle the subject Gary. These terms as well as others have become a religion to some. If I could find a store that sold only products made with gmo’s I would do all my shopping there.

  48. Barb Brownlee on November 26, 2021 at 2:59 pm

Hi Gary!🤗 Thanks for this amazing video and tips on purchasing garden seeds..no label vs organic! 👏👏 I have been an organic gardener for some time now and I agree that the no label is fine. It all depends on how you grow your garden makes it organic or not! I have been growing my garden without pesticides , using natural fertilizers , composting, and saving my own seeds before ‘organic’ became popular. I have noticed how garden seed cost have increased very much over the years with these extra labels. I am in Zone 5 and value all your tips!
    Stay blessed and safe! 🦋1/8/2021🦋

  49. OAK on November 26, 2021 at 3:00 pm

    I think you’re wrong.
Buying organic seeds means supporting organic farms so that they can do what they do. There may not be a difference between the seeds, (as it happens I don’t believe that), but the point is that we support systems that we want to see grow, and not support the systems we’d just as soon see disappear. I have no interest in supporting farms that are destroying the soil just so that they can produce more seeds. Buy organic all the way. Support life.
I’m quite surprised that your philosophy doesn’t see to extend to this very simple notion.

  50. Brendon S on November 26, 2021 at 3:03 pm

This is an awesome video Gary, thanks for the info. I, similar to yourself, just bought some acreage and we are looking forward to the 2021 growing season. I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now and we’re so excited to use your tips and tricks. Don’t listen to the haters, you have an awesome channel and I’m a subscriber for life! I also bought way too many of your seeds… Highly recommend anyone that reads this checks out his seed shop!
