LIST OF HERBS (always choose compact/dwarf varieties when you can):

-Herbs I’ve had the best success growing inside:
Needs lots of Light: Basil, Bay, Cilantro (likes a cool-ish location so it doesn’t bolt), Mint, Rosemary, Thyme

Doesn’t require quite as much light: Chives, Parsley (slow grower)

-Marginal luck with:
Marjoram, oregano, sage (susceptible to mildew)

-Bad luck with:
Lavender, Tarragon, Stevia

-Have never tried, but many say it grows great indoors:
Dill

Aerogarden addresses a lot of these issues. I am watching this video as I wish to transplant some herbs I’ve grown from seeds in the aerogarden into potted soil.

  2. Shirley Fraser on July 27, 2021 at 7:53 pm

Thanks for all the tips. I am a new gardener and thought I would like to start with herbs. Took lots of notes. I so enjoy all your videos. I am in southern Florida so growing here is quite different to what you can grow

Something about watching this three years later also in the middle of winter struck me as a sign lol. Thank you for making this!!!

Outside, that’s truly where the plants are the happiest ☀️😊

Laura, you mentioned not having much success with oregano, thyme, and lavender. My oregano and thyme grow like a weed in my outside raised bed and beyond as perennials. They have taken over a 6’x6’ raised bed together in 8 years. We are zone 7a here in Reno NV. Dry and windy climate. We also get winter snow and freezing all winter since were in the Eastern Sierra foothills. My oregano and thyme get no special care and winter over in the raised bed fine. They were just grocery store starts. They seed into other areas of my garden in the summer including near by pots. I transplant the seedlings into pots to give to people and they self seed in regular ground soil in my yard with no care at all. I’m experimenting and have created about a 10’ hedge with those in the ground. They love full sun up to later afternoon. The bees love them! They are about 3’ H bushes with woody stems so I need to trim them back at least once each summer. I harvest from them all summer long. I dry the leaves for winter use for myself and friends too with way more than I can use or give. All to say gardening here for 40+ years your zone is like our local foothills where I’ve also grown them with the same results. Maybe neglect is the key- LOL. But perhaps a protected sunny area would work for you there too. I’ve had similar results with specific varieties of perennial lavender here. Outside we get perennial lavender bushes to grow to 4’ diameter and lots of blooms like the lavender farms in Utah. I have found variety counts with lavender. I’ve also grown Rosemary varieties as perennials outside here where they get lots of afternoon sun and not much water. I did mulch those in the winter though. Rosemary grows woody stems as perennials here too. They even use some variety in some commercial landscaping here. Lavender too. So you might want to just try those herbs outside. Not much to lose for a about $3 a plant at the grocery store or garden center, right? I love your channel! I watch every episode. God bless you and yours. Can’t wait to hear the good news of your little girls arrival.

What would you recommend for drainage in a hanging Pottery plant?

  7. teresa legler on July 27, 2021 at 8:02 pm

Stevia loves the hot, humid, southern weather. Planted a couple of plants a few years ago and only died when the temp dropped. I harvested enough leaves to last a couple of years! May plant again, due to the cost. But hard to find.

  8. Analee Harp on July 27, 2021 at 8:02 pm

Bought a lavender plant shaped like a Christmas tree for the holiday season to take to my daughters.
…forgot it, gone 10 days, left in middle of table no light on or window light within 3 ft., heat set at 60. Expected to come home and it would be dead or at least unsalvageable. Nope! Sporting new and abundant growth. Some plants….just want to live…. I’m 66 and still learning. Love your informational and charming videos. Going back and watching earlier ones. Great way to spend gloomy winter days! Thank you!

  15. Deb Briggs on July 27, 2021 at 8:13 pm

Any special soil needs for herbs Never? Never had much luck with any herbs except mint, basil, and oregano outside. Mint takes over and not sure what to do. Tried keeping it in a pot but it got away anyhow.

  47. Deb Briggs on July 27, 2021 at 8:46 pm

I thought it was good to put stones, rocks, empty bottles, sticks, or something in the bottom of pots, buckets for better drainage; not true? I’ve done that outside for 🍅 tomato plants etc in buckets.
