The Herb Garden Grown in an Undersea Pot

The Herb Garden Grown in an Undersea Pot

Beneath the glistening blue waves of the Bay of Noli in the Italian Riviera are biospheres bursting with basil, tomatoes, herbs and other plants. It’s all a part of a science experiment known as Nemo’s Garden. While growing plants underwater might seem strange, it turns out there are a lot of advantages—protection from pests and extreme weather, a regulated temperature and access to fresh water as seawater evaporates and re-condenses. Co-creator of the project Luca Gamberini hopes that one day Nemo’s Garden will revolutionize the future of farming and inspire others to grow crops in places they never thought possible.

I really don’t see the point of this. Seems like a fun and expensive hobby to me, more than anything. I am a scientist and environmentalist, and I’m not convinced that there are any real benefits to this.

  7. FlyBird 420 on March 31, 2022 at 6:06 pm

It seems like a good idea but it’s really not this is just another place to put a greenhouse wasting all that money and time to grow something simple that you could grow on the ground??
    Really think about it!!

    NO. no it isn’t

  12. Sergio Solórzano on March 31, 2022 at 6:09 pm

now they just need a bigger dome and a tunnel to get there without the diving equipment, just walking, and then just getting wet only to your knees, but some rain boots and done.

  13. Phuri Sottatipreedawong on March 31, 2022 at 6:09 pm

    Can we plant mushrooms underwater?
In my opinion, I think yes but we need different food for them.

If we can farm underwater, I think that we can also live underwater.
Sorry that my English is not good.

How do the plants get enough carbon dioxide? Why not grow actual edible sea veggies like seaweed and kelp? The only use I can see this for is if we need to start colonizing the sea and live in underwater domes. Then they’ll look back at this experiment and say we have the data to grow under the sea.

  27. Louis S. on March 31, 2022 at 6:24 pm

Smh, so many naive, and narrow minded plains walkers. The idea is highly viable, but not in the way you want it to be. This dome can be done across so many places on this planet, there are numerous islands that need this sort of agricultural adaptation to become habitable, you say it’s a problem because of storms, or if done at a larger scale it would ruin the ecosystems. LOL YOU MAKE ME LAUGH, AND THE JOKER AWARD GOES TO THE CLOWNS OF BIAS AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT. Maybe focus on decreasing the amount of land we use for mass produce, only for a lot of the produce to go to waste because you’re all busy trying to make profit from it. Remember, that Agricultural Land you’re so proud of, has destroyed entire ecosystems and habitats just to make the land viable for the plants and crops you want, not to mention the animals farms and pastures that take thousands of dollars to maintain and operate. This feat of experimental engineering could be applied to rivers and the bright side is that it would be used on a Moderate Scale, the aim is to become more cost effective and INSPIRE OTHERS TO FIND NEW WAYS OF FARMING. This easily could be implemented on a Global Scale and boost the Economies of Third World, and still Developing countries, your lack of optimism and limited range of effect is appalling. Please, don’t ever shut down one idea over another, because whoever the idiot who invented plastic bags clearly just wanted to make a profit out of an already existing device and ended up poisoning this whole planet, Natural baskets existed long before Guns were invented – the fact that this world discovered places where the locals already implement Eco Friendly devices and still decided to push through with inventing plastic and plastic bags must’ve been greedy as hell, knowing that these exists> https://www.google.com/search?q=banig+bag&tbm=isch&chips=q:banig+bag,g_1:bayong:C9XbsKTrxhY%3D&rlz=1C1CHZL_enCA780CA780&hl=en&ved=2ahUKEwilqcCSgqPoAhUO3KwKHceiDT8Q4lYoAnoECAEQGQ&biw=1343&bih=657

This Underwater Farming is better for many ways, including the fact that when used in a moderate scale it will be more environmentally friendly, having a few of these as the size they are in the video growing crops for an entire town would boost their income, and decrease their spending effectively equalizing their financial standings, which is why as I mentioned using this for rivers to fit of course, as well as coastal deserts like those in the Sahara would make previously inhospitable places, habitable. Not to mention that people will be able to grow their food like a community garden where they can just pick without paying and can plant virtually almost any plant they desire. Vertical Farming is a good alternative to this too, and that’s just one example.

    Copied from Spongebob squarepants 😀

  29. Stephen Willis on March 31, 2022 at 6:27 pm

Wouldn’t growing the plants in a large building with solar power be more efficient? This seems to take up more resources to complete.

  30. Radhika Malaviya on March 31, 2022 at 6:27 pm

This is just a more inconvenient and resource-intensive greenhouse. I cannot fathom why this would be considered a reasonable form of agriculture.

  31. Nguyen Monat Son on March 31, 2022 at 6:31 pm

    guys you can do it!

  33. xxxx85 on March 31, 2022 at 6:32 pm

"Harvesting is actually very simple", it doesn’t look simple at all. You need to swim under water, harvest tiny amounts at a time, those underwater grow pods are separates from eachother… How are you ever going to harvest it efficiently if you want to grow large amounts?

  34. Gary Green on March 31, 2022 at 6:32 pm

For large scale, the logistics are impossible.

  35. 12 34 on March 31, 2022 at 6:35 pm

  39. Evil Hutdug on March 31, 2022 at 6:39 pm

If they make a rly big dome they can really do this but if its just small it not too practical

I"m very certain "SpaceX" and "NASA" would be very much interested in your studies for the mission to Mars : )

  44. Tactical Cooking on March 31, 2022 at 6:45 pm

This is a great idea…one can produce alot of seeds which theoretically have "stronger" genes for soil growing…thus giving hope for future growing in today’s polluted environment

I remember Sandy from Spongebob doing something like this…. 👀
And some android farming game underwater too…

  49. sofiaswim on March 31, 2022 at 6:54 pm

You started this project because we car overusing our planet’s resources, and you started to use how much resources to build these underwater green houses, scuba diving, and equipment? What is your profit margin? Don’t be ridiculous, this is just a perfect excuse for all the scuba diving, isn’t it?

  50. Dave Ha on March 31, 2022 at 6:55 pm

One question tho: why is everyone models here I mean they’re all like wow
