FAQ:
– The wood Rot?
Per the University of Massachusetts Amherst:
“Wood can be too wet to decay. Waterlogged wood will not allow oxygen in to support the growth of fungi. Marine pilings kept fully submerged may never rot.”‘
So long as the board is fully submerged constantly, rot will not happen. I know it is likely to decay over time, but not nearly as fast as everyone in my comments seems to think. I may be wrong! But building these features is what I enjoy, so if it falls apart I’ll build a new one. So far its been a Year with no sign of decay.

– Rock dampening noise instead of the board?
Yes! I did that, it dampened the noise and looked kinda cool, but it was still splashing out quite a bit. I left the wood strip instead.

– How do you clean it?
I made a video about that! Its pretty easy. Maintenance guide here: https://youtu.be/FhjnN7zTedw

Also, I’ve put a 400 GPH pump on the water feature and it runs pretty nice, a little quieter with the less water. When you’re picking a pump size anything between 400 and 800 gallons per hour should work!

I made a followup Q&A Video here: https://youtu.be/ifVnUNPQeV8

[ below is the self-introduction I wrote when I published this video and I’m leaving it for later reference. ]

Hello my name is Travis Jantzer! I’m a vlogger from Oregon in the PNW. Online I go by TJantzer. My wife’s name is Cassie and our daughter born in spring of 2019 is named Hazel. If you watch our videos you’ll learn we love rock climbing (particularly bouldering), ultimate frisbee, road trips, diy projects, and drones. We converted a van to a camper for vanlife and take road trips when we have time. We play ultimate in the fall. Climb in the gym from fall to spring. Play Frisbee again in the spring. And play sand volleyball with our friends through the summer. I wrote a book and love writing poetry. Cassie loves watercolor painting and pencil sketching. We both enjoy cooking though she is way better at it. I started on Youtube in 2011 but did not take it seriously until 2018 and even then I was inconsistent. In 2020 my resolution is to make one video every weekend and post it by Tuesday of that week. My passion is video editing. I started doing wedding videos last year and this year got a job shooting real estate photos and video. I still consider myself an amateur, but I’m learning something new with every video.
My goals for 2020:
1 video every week
500 subscribers on Youtube
$10,000 earned from local video and photo gigs ($1000 earned but, Covid..)

Subscribe to my channel to follow along. Comment below if you relate to anything you see, or have any questions.
I’ll respond to as many comments as I see!

You can find me on Instagram and Twitter with “TJantzer” and visit my website to see my writing and blog posts at TJantzer.com

Thanks for stopping by!
I’ll see you next Tuesday.

What happens in the winter? Can the pump handle cold temperatures?

  2. nelsonrc on August 11, 2021 at 11:30 pm

Using Murphy’s oil soap on a wood mold your going to reuse works really well.

  3. Mark Abreu on August 11, 2021 at 11:30 pm

Very nice. Three questions. As the water evaporates, how do you know when to add water? What happens if you don’t add water in a timely manner? If you have a heavy rain, what’s the flooding like around this feature?

  4. Cas Fiols on August 11, 2021 at 11:33 pm

im thinking of building one of these but want to make it quite a bit bigger…internal probably 1 meter 20cm sqaure and the cement probably 20cm thick so total 1’40 x 1’40 – With that width would you recommend 2 exit points for the water on top or maybe even 3??? Great design and idea tho!! Thanks for the great content!

  5. Ray_ Of_Hope on August 11, 2021 at 11:35 pm

Where does all that water go?

  6. Chris Ware on August 11, 2021 at 11:35 pm

Hey Travis. So what are the lengths of the 4 pieces wood to make the inner square vs the outer square. If one side of the inner was 2ft should the outer be 4ft? Is it 1:2. What’s the ratio?

    Great work BTW!

  7. Barbara Mathias on August 11, 2021 at 11:36 pm

I would of tried some stones instead of a board

  8. Cindy Mullikin on August 11, 2021 at 11:38 pm

How do you keep it safe from tipping over?

  9. Ts s on August 11, 2021 at 11:38 pm

Consider some potato sized rocks to dampen the sound of the water falling. Nice colored ones.

  10. Dee Cee on August 11, 2021 at 11:38 pm

I would pay you $250 labour for that to install @ my yard.

  11. MySonet5522 on August 11, 2021 at 11:39 pm

This was a great video a d I like the cost being added. Well done.

  12. Tanya CROCKETT on August 11, 2021 at 11:40 pm

I would like to see how u connect the pump to the pipes

  13. Pat Bowman on August 11, 2021 at 11:40 pm

LOVE! I live in a ranch, so I would go with a rectangular structure. And would prefer that it be freestanding on a square blocks that could also serve as a refillable reservoirs so that the water recirculates. Possibly 2’x4′ in size. Unsure about pump size. Would also be cool to form a number 9, which is my house number, and directing the water to fall into an open trough at the bottom 9’s closed loop, but fashioning the mold would be challenging. Anyway, fun to dream. Enjoy your videos very much! Thank you.

Had to subscribe, great vid/project! I think I wanna try that one with a few mods. I must be an asshole cause with my 3 fountains & two ponds, our property sounds like soothing nature. Never heard a peep from the neighbors, I’m almost sure their smart enough to just suck it up if they did have a complaint.

  15. M Nakkach on August 11, 2021 at 11:41 pm

use plexiglass for the angle piece no?

  16. Alicia Griggs on August 11, 2021 at 11:41 pm

You can use cooking oil or mineral oil as a form release agent and paint it on with a brush all over the wood. I would definitely not recommend diesel!

  17. Clark Hudgins on August 11, 2021 at 11:43 pm

    Awesome Sauce ,,, tyvn

  18. Kevin Skowronek on August 11, 2021 at 11:44 pm

Great job. I’m fascinated by waterfalls and fountains. I appreciate your work and effort. Any idea on how to make basalt rock columns?

  19. Mark Kalinowski on August 11, 2021 at 11:44 pm

I’m gonna give this one a try. I think I’ll use a sheet of copper tented over the boards for the water to fall on and let the patina grow over time. Thanks for posting this.

  20. Kevin Weimer on August 11, 2021 at 11:46 pm

Last thing I would do is worry about the neighbors. If they don’t like it……

  21. Grace American on August 11, 2021 at 11:46 pm

Personally – I like the piece of wood there to dampen the sound. You might try a piece of timber or branch something like that. Something interesting.

  22. SheRox Austin on August 11, 2021 at 11:49 pm

Great videos, and you make some really cool water features. I especially appreciate the cost analysis you share at the end of this one – so helpful.

  23. Dieter Zerressen on August 11, 2021 at 11:50 pm

I like this but it seems a little too splashy and noisy. All that splashing in our heat would dry this out constantly or an automatic fill valve would run constantly. I’m going to try to put a channel on top and some plastic straws between the channel and the bottom of the top (before the concrete sets). At the bottom another channel sloped towards a pump recess and somehow a way to get the power cord out. If the top is made right it could double as a bird bath.

  24. A_B_C Easy_as_123 on August 11, 2021 at 11:51 pm

This really is beautiful. I want to try this. Will the running water break down the concrete over time? How many years do you think I could get out of something like this? Would sealing this with a waterproof resin help prolong the life of a project like this?

  25. Avinash Singh on August 11, 2021 at 11:53 pm

Nice work man. Video was well done also. Build montages with voice overs I think is ideal in DIY videos (no wasted time watching someone just talk)… although I would have liked to see more of thos, I thought you did a decent balance. I liked the pros and cons you gave for different materials. Love that you gave a cost breakdown at the end 👍🏽

Great Feature! Do you have trouble with mold or scum ?

  28. Karen Norwood on August 11, 2021 at 11:56 pm

I like the style of your fountain. I work with 2 part resins and am curious if you’ve ever thought of using colored glass in the opening? That thought popped into my head when I saw your fountain. Also layering this fountain with a smaller square or even another shape with on top, how hard would that be?

  29. Cat Ritz on August 11, 2021 at 11:56 pm

Usually you can control the water flow on pumps…
You’re an artist for sure! So off you go into the beautiful world of creativity.
Will sub just for the pleasure of watching you evolve in your designs, methods…
    Thanks for sharing.

    I love these . 😍

  31. Troy H. on August 11, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Awesome job!! If the wood look is something people like, just apply Marine Epoxy to the wood, it will give it that protection needed for extended life, just use a quality marine epoxy to avoid creating a yellow hue after exposure to heat and UV light from the sun. Thanks for the tutorial man, definitely going to do this in the future. Great co tent

  32. Tony Gonzalez on August 11, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Great work .I am so doing this

  33. Bill Randolph on August 12, 2021 at 12:00 am

Kewl Idea. Not sure if it was said but adding lights to the top of the inner opening facing down would look great. They sell LED strip lights that are so thin you could add a set of waterproof ones instead? If you want to go crazy you could add propane nozzles on the bottom part and have flames come up into the falling water. For parties and if company comes over.

Could you please estimate the size of your basin? And if you think you would make it larger another time, what would you guess would be an ideal size? What you have done here looks soooo very good. Thanks for your channel.

I have a solar power water fountain and I’ve been thinking about making a out door water feature and this video has given me ideas thanks

  40. Dave Kai on August 12, 2021 at 12:07 am

Great build. I think I’ll do something similar. Also if you use 45 degree elbows instead of 90s you "should" get better water flow.

  41. Troy H. on August 12, 2021 at 12:11 am

Did you prime&glue the pvc piping??

  42. Michael Barker on August 12, 2021 at 12:11 am

Half pipe PVC to break up the sound?

  43. Danielle Salazar on August 12, 2021 at 12:12 am

Question. I poured the feature, stripped most of the molds but now I can’t figure out how to stand it up. Any advice on how you got it off the ground? Mine is the exact same size and weighs a tonnnnn. Thanks!
