I have a similar tool, but you have to realize that it will not do as you wish in all circumstances. My flowerbed was filled with lava rock by the previous owner. In fact, it was done probably 20 years back of so and the overgrowth around all the shrubs in each bed had allowed nut grass and night shade, plus pigweed to grow wild for no telling how long. At first we simply tilled the entire bed, but within a very, very short time, that nut grass and pigweed had germinated in the seeds we seemed to have tilled up. It was a mess and a total surprise to us. Pigweed is horrible, in that nothing chemical seems to kill the stuff & you have to pull it up by hand to effectively get rid of it. Any rate, I purchased my similar hoe and thought it would be wonderful in clearing up this new growth of weeds and grasses in my beds. Wrong! That tool simply glides right over the lava rocks and won’t dig in well to remove the weeds in there. I found that wetting the bed before weed removal helps, in that the hoe does then grip much better to remove the weeds. Once you get them out, do not just let them lay on top of the soil to the garden or they can drop seeds or even get their uprooted roots to take hold and produce more weeds. As I said, my own hoe is not quite the same as what you used, but the same thing may apply when you use it in a bed that has any rocks in it. Looks like this worked for you, but I’d sure be using a landscape covering and much to keep any future weeds at bay. You don’t want to use products for weed killing such as Sedgehammer around any veggies or such. Nice video.

In the garden I just like a good ol’ fashioned hoe. My favorite however are the kind a few miles off the Las Vegas strip. None for Easter though.

  3. Mary Ellen Cook on August 7, 2021 at 11:05 pm

I stayed at home and read in bed. I did fix the puppies a special Easter brunch with their dog food and chicken breast mixed in together.
Now ,Jared ,you were a good daddy hiding all of the Easter beer for the kiddies. That was a dirty trick though taking all of the cans and claiming them for yourself afterwards. It’s a good thing that JayLena got to drink at least one, and that Jason doesn’t care for beer, LOL!
Yes those garden tools when used properly are very effective. It is still not too late to put down weed barrier and mulch along the rows that you planted in your garden. What you do is lay the weed barrier down beside the road that you wish to cover and then Mark an X where each of the plants are and then just place the weed barrier over the plantings and then cover with your mulch after that. Obviously, if you plant some more vegetables in that section to the side that still needs to be weeded, then after you have tilled the dirt, put your weed barrier down, put in the plantings and then cover with mulch.

Happy Easter!!! If you expand your garden any further, you should keep a look out for a mini tiller. The weeding would go even faster. P.S. the garden is really looking great.

Everyone really brought new life to that garden Today! What a dramatic difference you made in short order. I had thought perhaps you simp,y let it go beyond the point of return but you showed me wrong!

Great job. You’d never recognize it as the same garden.

  15. Mark Bonham on August 7, 2021 at 11:15 pm

I’m not much of a garden man however I have always hated weeds growing up in my dirt and have been using that scrapper hoe or what ever it is called for over 30 years now and yes it is my favorite garden tool. During my 22 year drinking career I hid beers on Easter and hung them on the Christmas tree as ornaments but at 40 years old I quit all that crap. Enjoy it while you can however, if it starts to become a problem you will have to give it up. Football and beer were my thing and the Cowboys were my favorite opponent to watch against my 49er’s. Happy Easter you’all!

  33. kiki gamble on August 7, 2021 at 11:34 pm

Consider old newspaper – just wet the paper down. When you see the paper blowing around, it’s a reminder to water your garden. Cardboard is a cheap weed barrier. Have Stainer chew along border of fence line, just watch the other plants so they don’t get eaten by him! Happy Easter!

  39. Kacky64 on August 7, 2021 at 11:52 pm

What did I do for Easter? Well, I drove 43 miles to our old house to load up our riding mower on the back of the truck. Then drove back to the new house unloaded it and started cutting grass. The gas we had in our can was bad (only found out after putting it in the mower). We had to drain the gas and clean out the tank on the mower. It is all good now. Got the majority of our grass cut while my son was pressure washing the brick and sidewalk. Overall it was a good day. I thank Jesus for such a beautiful day.
