This is great! I love your brain! I have been wondering about some of my older seeds… you are so right that they definitely don’t grow in the trash’ I’m going to try several kiddie pool beds this year. I think with the seed collections for novices, another helpful tidbit would be what things can’t be grown together, and things that help each other. I bought a root veg seed collection and am glad I read about “friends” and “foes,” as parsnips and carrots won’t grow together. Other things that come together in these collections: brassicas don’t grow with radishes, but celery will help brassicas, and carrots and radishes pair well. A little garden layout guide would be nice for newbies. Marigolds in all these collections would also be helpful, as they’re cheap and proficient and help attract good things and deter bad things.

I just started to garden this year. I have fell in love with it so much. I started researching gardening on YouTube and came across your videos about April 2020. You have such a gentle sweet spirit about you that I admire so much. Anywho, as you were opening the first package of survival seeds I was saw that you would read the seed and place it to the right or left of you. I knew you were seperating fall seeds and summer seeds before you even said it. That brought me a little joy and affirmed that maybe I did learn something about gardening over the last year. So thank you.

    Thank you for this.

one caveat to that is that any vegtables/produce going into the USA, or being shipped out of the USA, is irradiated in the shipping process as a way to kill any potential pathogens or pests. As a canadian, I can’t use those seeds since many are basically killed through that irradiation process. Now, if the seeds are renderred inert, what does irradiation do to the nutrients and vitamins?? I bought one of the seed packs years ago and they were great but not at all designed from growing in zone 5-6 so you have to be cautious of that. Like you, I keep seed packs for years; I have them in a box in the fridge in the dark. Not many issues with germination! Best of luck with this year’s garden. 🙂

Your blogs are great But the silica gel takes moisture out the air not oxygen

  7. Misty Richards on August 22, 2021 at 12:23 am

I bought the Open Vault Seed Collection in 2017 and paid $16 for it. All of the seeds germinate well and have kept well these past years. It gave me a start and I still have some of them.

Asparagus is a good addition because it is a long term survival crop. Plant once and harvest for ten years. Yes they take a long time to produce but they reseed themselves and they will produce a reliable food source for more than a decade. It would be helpful if each pack of seeds had a small instruction booklet on how to save seeds from the crops they send you so you can keep growing for many years. Also something to remember. When it comes to survival gardening you need to know how to preserve your harvest. And it takes a lot more than you might think to feed a person for a full year. Survival gardens have to produce a lot more than people think.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you and your channel. I’ve had a garden for decades and I so enjoy watching you and getting so many great ideas.
Here’s one for you and your YouTube family.
After your giant sunflowers 🌻 are done hang them in you garage or barn to dry. Then in the winter hang them in your trees. I’m telling you our squirrels and birds just love them!! God bless 🥰

First, THANK YOU, Jess for dispelling the GMO nonsense that is out there. If you wish to avoid GMO foods, that is perfectly fine. But you should realize that there are actually only a small number of GMO crops & almost ALL of them are large volume commercial crops. The most common in the US are soybeans, corn, sugar beets, canola, and cotton. BTW human insulin (used to treat diabetes) is a GMO product.
On using grocery store vegetables: Note that you should use organic vegetables, especially potatoes, because sometimes non-organic vegetables are treated to prevent sprouting, You can do a sprouting test on seeds by putting them on a damp paper towel & putting them in a baggie, in a dark cupboard.
In the last 3 years , I have grown these from plants & seeds sold as food in the grocery store :
    – 15lbs of sweet potatoes from a sprouted sweet potato
    – extra hot bird peppers (I researched & think they were Zimbabwe Black peppers), from bag of dried pequita peppers sold in the Mexican aisle – I dehydrated them & 1 plant will provide me with hot peppers for years
    – garlic & ginger (ginger is a heavenly plant – looks like bamboo & every part of the plant smells like ginger. I grew it in 5 gallon buckets on my deck.)
    – lima beans from bag of dried beans
    – acorn squash form the seeds I scooped out
One guy online grew chia plants from Badia chia seeds sold to eat.

I didn’t even think of looking for a "survival seed kit", of course you did, Jess, the SEED QUEEN!

  13. Haba Ristra on August 22, 2021 at 12:29 am

Want BEANS? Walmart sells a 1 lb bag called "15 Bean Soup". I did a germ test…80% sprouted except the cracked green and the yellow peas

  14. LoveoftheDark Fiber Arts on August 22, 2021 at 12:29 am

My sweetie bought me a Patriot Heirloom survival seed kit several years ago. I only broke into it this year to start a garden, and they have been wonderful! So far, almost every seed I’ve planted has germinated and grown. I’m quite pleased. 🙂

  15. Deborah Shaw on August 22, 2021 at 12:31 am

I actually bought the patriots seed pack a couple months ago. I am already growing them. I wish I would have seen the others but am happy with what I have. I have also purchased other seeds to supplement. This is my first garden other than just some tomatoes. I am recently retired and have a really bad back do my husband built me a table out of scrap wood to put buckets on. I am hoping to get some good out of all of this. But I am having a lot of fun regardless. Live your videos. I live in Northwest Arkansas.

  16. Bj M on August 22, 2021 at 12:32 am

Girl! Your book arrived yesterday and even though I’m an experienced gardener there are nuggets of information (wisdom) that I appreciate too. I sat down and read the whole danged thing. You taught me about cattle panel hoop trellises on R&RF… which is a game changer in of itself! We all do things a little differently and have varied growing zones, but you pulled it all together in a terrific format that anyone can access and profit from. Grow something lovely indeed. So when’s the next one due? 🤣

I’ve got seeds that mice peed on should I try & grow them or will they harm me or just not grow? Does anyone know?

  20. Tamara Roberts on August 22, 2021 at 12:37 am

Absolutely a great informative video! 👍

  22. Loretta Jones on August 22, 2021 at 12:39 am

Have you posted a video of how you catalog or store your seeds? I thought you had but I can’t find it.

  23. Tamara Roberts on August 22, 2021 at 12:39 am

I keep and reflect on a gardening journal in case I forget something and learn from past experiences

  24. mellissa austin on August 22, 2021 at 12:40 am

I feel that it be easier to buy what seed you love and save them in a plastic bag with moist absorbed and put the bag in a plastic seal container.
    I do that

Very, very thoughtful of you to make this video. You are the best kind of gardener, passing along your experience, knowledge, wisdom and love of growing your own food. Your a good example for new gardeners to follow.

Ice chests have worked well for me for storing seeds.

  30. Joyce Morgan on August 22, 2021 at 12:45 am

Hi Jess! I live in NE Georgia in zone 7b which I believe is same zone you’re in. I have a 30×70 high tunnel and also
10×12 greenhouse. I usually start my seeds in my bathroom which gets sun from the South but thinking I should utilize my small greenhouse since I have one. You have inspired me! Lol! What temp should I keep at night? Also planning on using a kerosene heater to keep warm. Any suggestions are appreciated😉

  31. Martha Thompson on August 22, 2021 at 12:47 am

Your last statement here has been something I’ve been repeatedly saying the last few years as the prepper movement has grown into mainstream ideas like buying an emergency pack of seeds in case of emergency-how useful is that going to be if you have no experience growing anything? I tell people if you’re going to save a seed vault for emergency, doesn’t it make sense to at least practice growing some of the stuff in your pack now, so you have experience when something happens? Do you really want to be learning on the only seeds you might be able to get? Makes more sense to me to buy two bags, throw one in the deep freezer, and grow a few things per year for the knowledge of it.

I am saying thank you to you today because you take the time to explain the seeds I wish you would do a whole series on seeds so that people would know how to put them up and that way we’ll have some for the next year and so on and so forth if you do already have a video on that if you could just let me know I would really appreciate it I feel you have a calling in this calling is this I always feel like I’m drawn to hear what you have to say because what you say is usually write thank you so much and God bless

  34. Rabellaka on August 22, 2021 at 12:49 am

I can’t plant most plants until late May or early June, and when I started looking for seeds in January, a lot of my favourite stores were already sold out of the varieties I wanted. I’m already making lists of what I want for next year.

  35. Ernest Walden on August 22, 2021 at 12:49 am

Awsome. Thanks for sharing. Any advice on keeping raccoons out of my sweet corn this year? Guess I could stay up late and blow there heads off with a 12 ga 😂 but any advice would be appreciated.

  36. Elizabeth Donnelly on August 22, 2021 at 12:52 am

Buying the things and storing without the knowledge…. That’s why I’m here girl 😭 I’m tryna not to kill all the garden things! 😂

  37. islndjak on August 22, 2021 at 12:54 am

I purchased a paper box with 132 kinds of seed and 21 herbs preservation is part of this so I picked up an 18 dollar on how to preserve everything without refrigeration my seeds were 62 dollars and I bought 2 years ago , today the same box is 102 dollars

  38. K B on August 22, 2021 at 12:54 am

This was great! I never have even heard about survival seed collections until your video. I’m fortunate to be able to harvest seeds each season but the seed catalogs are low or out this year due to the rush of new gardeners due to the lock downs.

  39. Rita Escobedo on August 22, 2021 at 12:56 am

I just bought the sustainable seeds

  41. Gwyn on August 22, 2021 at 12:58 am

I keep mine in ziplocs and inside of a solid black tub, with the clamp down lid… might be over kill, but it is my way.

  42. Christine Sanderson on August 22, 2021 at 12:58 am

My kid got very nervous last summer when they reported shortages. I have a big garden, but she decided to plant her own. She went with seeds scavenged from grocery store produce.
The peppers were slow growing but the plant was strong with very prolific durable peppers.
We learned chickpeas don’t grow well in zone 7b. Black and kidney beans do fine kinda.
She even grew carrots tops. Obviously no taproot, but we used tbe greens for pesto and when it went to seed she planted those and we had early winter carrots. To be honest I was shocked it did so well.
Shes got an internship this summer but comes every weekend to work in our new joint garden. She helped pick out the seeds and has been a true partner in this.

I love this video because it put some fun information in my head

  44. Autumn Fesperman on August 22, 2021 at 1:02 am

You have inspired me, I got an idea…I’m a middle school teacher at a school with a courtyard. We had a librarian that retired that used to care for it. We had a grant for cold frames that are now falling apart and my artists painted a rain barrel with endemic amimals. I think we need to take on the "Victory Garden" attitude and tackle reviving this area. Thank you AGAIN for the inspiration!

  45. Ava Goodnight on August 22, 2021 at 1:05 am

Onion and parsnip seeds are not a good one for storage. However, with the extremely reduced fertility rate, leftover seeds can be thrown in a garbage bed. I have had luck with that.
I have rutabaga seeds, and amaranth seeds from park seeds from 2001 that have germinated this year with 75 percent germination. 20 year old seeds are still viable.

  46. Mary Miller on August 22, 2021 at 1:06 am

What is the brand name of the brown envelope you opened that has 42 seed varieties in it? Can anyone list the two brands that Jess said were the best and most well thought out brands of all she opened in the show? I need to order my seeds now. Thanks

  47. yankee way farms on August 22, 2021 at 1:07 am

I got one of those and they are great for a whole garden for a low price. I had great germination rate. I think being an experience Gardner and wanting to try different kinds of veggies this is a great way to go to save some money and get the basics or try a lot of new veggies for a low price.so in their defense of small amounts you can save seeds from your crop as well.

  48. Frederick Woolever on August 22, 2021 at 1:08 am

I bought a multi seed pack from Amazon in 2020. It had 40 varieties for 25$. Black Duck Brand. Had 3 different types of herbs and tons of variety. My only disappointment was the were no corn seeds. We are going to try permaculture with the three sisters this year and now I may be a little behind in the process. Overall a great choice for beginners in my opinion.

Thanks for taking time to make videos for the rest of us. You are a wealth of information. As a very new gardener, it’s much appreciated.

  49. Tabitha Strickland on August 22, 2021 at 1:10 am

I found the sustainable seed company and bought the bug out bag. Didn’t know they had things like ‘survival seed kits’ I started my very own veggie patch July 2020 after we moved into our very own home after renting for years. Im finding im most at peace when I’m tending to my garden

I am starting 25 year old peas this year. Hope I get something! They were my mom’s.
