Starting Vegetable Seeds Indoors: Planting, Watering, Feeding Tomatoes & Peppers- KIS Series (3)

This is the 3rd video in this KIS series. Here is a simple way to start your tomatoes and peppers indoors. I cover planting, watering and feeding. Use a processed or organic fertilizer at a NPK of 5-5-5 or lower. Just use this information as basic guidelines. Start your tomatoes 6-8 weeks and peppers 8-12 weeks before your night time temperatures hover regularly around 50 degrees F.

I have a tomato plant, and it is already 3 and half weeks old. Last 2 days i didnt water it since in the manual it instructed water 3-5 days. Aftr 2 days of not watering it, it looks it was gonna die, like its trunk just fall. So i watered them again, and now theyre ok!

Gary, if I want to use LED lights, do I have to use a special kind? I just grabbed a 4 ft light from the lighting department for$20. That was half the cost of the 2 ft "grow light". Now I’m wondering if that’s ok.

I use tweezers when I work with my seeds.  I know how many seeds I am using and how deep I am planting them.  That also means that there is very little chance for me to waste seeds.

Hello, Gary! What about rabbit poop for use as a fertilizer? I raise meat rabbits and have tons of droppings! Will fungus growth be an issue?

  24. dalexdalex on April 21, 2022 at 6:59 pm

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand. You’ve said that is not necessary to add fertilizer in the begging. But later you put the prepared water, before placing the seeds. Maybe I didn’t unerstand something…

when u say keep them in the light for 3 days, is it any light in my house or a specific light that made for plants u mean?

  31. Laura Cash on April 21, 2022 at 7:07 pm

Do you use tap water to water seedlings? This year, just as last year, my plants look as though i may be over fertilizing (purple underneath leaves and yellowing leaves around tips) but otherwise look healthy. I’ve only used diluted worm tea once on the plants after the true leaves emerged. Any thoughts? Could it be minerals/chlorine in the tap water?

  32. Betty Waites on April 21, 2022 at 7:08 pm

I put light over my plants you suggested and they are leggie why?

  35. Bill coley on April 21, 2022 at 7:15 pm

Can a person start seeds in a small piece of sponge, im using a tower setup this year which I do not want any dirt in the system Because of the pump

  36. michael murphy on April 21, 2022 at 7:16 pm

Thank you for the in depth video. These videos are wonderful. I refer back to them often. I am always learning new things each time I view your videos. like the comment below this post, I put the organic lime, garden tone into the pot soil of my tomato plants. they are surviving with covers at night for the low temps in Md. but the dogs are trying to sniff and would eat the soil.
What do you advise to do with my organic-loving dogs to keep them out of the tomatoes until I get them in the ground?
will I also  have a problem there is I add the organic products? And will I have that problem with my 5 gallon pots?

  37. Armando Collado on April 21, 2022 at 7:17 pm

I would disagree using synthetic fertilizer will kill microbes who play we value part in soil.

  46. Bob Ballou on April 21, 2022 at 7:22 pm

Hi. Excellent video series. I am watching them all, and learning a lot. With regard to starting plants like peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, etc., I understand that it can be just as good, if not better, to start them in larger (4") pots, as you note. In that regard, what about using cow pots? Should I follow the same bottom-watering process you describe? If so, will the bottoms hold out over the several weeks of indoor growing, or possibly start breaking down? Thanks.

  47. Todd G on April 21, 2022 at 7:24 pm

    Gary, same principles for flowers?

  48. bobinmissouri on April 21, 2022 at 7:25 pm

Love your videos! Thank you so much, any specific type of soil I need for transplanting? My brandy wine heirlooms are about 4 inches tall and I’m planning on transplanting soon, they are currently growing and have germinated in rock wool
