Starting seeds for our market garden

Starting seeds for our market garden

Showing the basics of how we start seeds here without a greenhouse or fancy equipment. Hope somebody gets something out of this and just starts some seeds!! Remember to keep the seeds environment as close to natural as possible – don’t leave it inside too long, it needs to be acclimated to the real weather and sunlight if you don’t have a greenhouse. They may mature slower but you’ll have a stronger and well acclimated seedling when you go to plant it out in the field in the natural elements.

When you said you double covered, you did insect cover first and then Agribon for the second layer?

Do you have issues with fungus gnats in the basement or cat tunnel? I seem to battle fungus gnats when starting seeds indoors due to the consistently moist soil. AND the darn things follow the plant outside and I find them in various vegetable containers I grow outside.

Hey Casey! So your starting with non-grow lights? I bought some full spectrum grow lights this week and they seem pretty good for what I paid. I’m curious if you’ve heard much about starting the seeds using the red/blue LED grow lights. I had a small set last year and like you said they got leggy! I felt it was because they were just not powerful enough but I also wondered if a white light could help? I made out OK because I got the starts out into my home brew greenhouse/chicken tractor as soon as I could and put a heat lamp into it for cold nights. I was running them back n forth from my basement too but eventually used a chicken brooder lamp! Last question, did you say that tomato starts don’t like humidity? I was thinking they would, or at least some, do you track humidity and if so what %RH do you shoot for?

Hey Casey, wish you would go into details of the catapillar tunnel construction details. Thanks

Hi I’m new to your channel I have 2 fish tanks and was wondering if that will work for growing veg and herbs?

Great stuff sir. I’m envious of the tunnels. I just don’t have the soil just yet to do a full tunnel. I’m still needing to amend my soil. Sand is very hard to grow in…lol.

How many seeds do you have to start a week? Are you able to grow year round in NC? I didn’t start seed until the first of April and I took them out every day and inside till the nights were warmer… I’m concerned with starting seed late winter for a spring crop next year because we have an almost non existent spring. One day it’s 30 the next it’s 80. What kind of rates do you see during the colder months? Thanks

Great video, and thanks for showing it as economically being cheaper or expensive- I like seeing tings that are more economical. I think you touched well on how you can keep it simple! Hope you continue to grow! You’re an awesome farmer for plants and have a personality to market really well!

Youre doing a great job there.Being a chef presentation was every thing,we used a lot of edible flowers in salads, plates and trays.

That’s an awesome trick for filling trays and making the indentations!! Don’t let those flowers go to seed 😉 self seeding plants in a tunnel is a bad idea… Don’t ask how I know 😂

Hi – where do you get those seed trays?

Mike and Lacie Dickson from ‘the fit farmer’ also went there, stayed over in the yurt on site and did a video as well.
