Several of my apple trees have the bare branches and leaves at the end and I’ve been wondering the same. I’ll need to do some research, it looks like.
We did a version of rhubarb crisp that has an almost sugar cookie like crust – it was DELICIOUS.
Also, love the hanging flower boxes!
“Ornamental “ crabapples are edible n so too the lilac. Chutney can be made w the crabapple & jelly from the lilac. So don’t separate the concept of a food garden n landscape area. Find “Way of Herbs”. It’s a paperback but one of the most valuable resources to have.
The garden is looking so beautiful! It’s coming together! Thank you Kate for filming! Lol!
nLoved your video, (thanks Kate for helping and congrats on finishing 11th grade.) your views are gorgeous, you are blessed. Their is a you tube channel called: The Gardening Channel with James Prigioni he is a very educated gardener and has a orchard. Look for his video on pruning fruit trees or reach out to him. I’m sure he would be very helpful on pruning your fruit trees. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your crisp…..
Love the sound of thunder. And Strawberry rhubarb pie is the best. Wish I could cook, I would live on it if I could. All I know about trees is you prune them in the fall to winter months. 🙂
New growth produces apples and all that wood takes energy. After watching a couple of Apple pruning vids you’ll figure it out. Gauchi was mentioned. He is very immobile so wants branches with fruit low so he can reach. Me too! One video I watched suggested three verticals are good (just shor)
Awesome job videoing, Kate! So much great info, Chels! I learned a lot …especially with rhubarb. Mine is a bit skinny this year, so I’ll research when to split my plants. I have a recipe I found online for Sour Cream Rhubarb cookies. They are very tender cookies…not crisp. They are perfect with s cup of tea. 😊. I’ll see if I can get the recipe to you, or wait until we see you IN A MONTH! (Just a teensy bit excited!).
Beautiful tour!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6_kMMuNEUM You might be interested in this method of tree pruning. Paul has some great gardening ideas if you haven’t already come across his channel.
I’m a bit late (by about 2 yrs) to answer the pruning apple tree question but one person I suspect can answer any questions you have about growing fruit trees is the gentleman who is Castle Hill Garden in GB. His breadth of knowledge generally qn things gardening leads me to think that he was a professional gardener before retirement. Now he just has a HUGE kitchen garden to look after. You will drool.
He does a show on winter pruning as well as summer pruning, and general care and maintenance of apple trees as well aa other fruit trees every year. This one is an example, and I suspect if you drop him a question, he would be delighted to answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu3GT8YgVAM "Pruned Apple Tree, Cut Down Raspberries, And A Summer Harvest" Jul 20, 2019.
I love that You are growing in that old wagon. I’ve always wanted a wagon for our farm.
I’m used to always go to a restaurant and order cobbler thinking, “oh I love cobbler!” Then I would get it and be disappointed, because it turns out, I don’t really like cobbler. What I love is crisp.
The two of you did a great job in sharing this with a lot of interesting gardening topics and ideas on how to use entire plants as with the rhubarb leaves!
How long is your growing season?
That thunder made its own closing statement. Interestingly as I watch this, it’s raining and thundering here as well.
Do you have a link to the university research and or where those trees are available?
Love strawberry rhubarb or mixed berry pie, warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, yum.
Hoop house!! That would be awesome!!!!
Raspberry infused pork…. sounds delicious! 😇
Paul Gautschi with Back to Eden Gardening is extremely knowledgeable about apple trees and he has a video on how and when to prune them. He also has his trees grow laterally and not vertically. I will find a link for him and post it if you like.
I always have been told that one had to cut the asparagus down at the ground level or it would not come back. But it appears as though you just snapped it off? Is there a difference between wild grown and tame varieties? Thank you.
Zone 4a is mine in Northern Ontario.
Great.. watching from india..
Try growing okra in the green house.
Your property is amazing! I’m also in Zone 4… really trying to find the right place to grow a food forest.
YES! Goodbye to okra! I think that is an excellent thought and you could use the space for more enjoyable veggies! I am NOT a fan of okra…did you guess? The flowers and shrubs are looking good and soon will be feeling beautiful for sure. As for the apple trees…no idea whatsoever so I will be curious as to what you end up doing. I am hoping to put my garden in this week. I have only my potatoes in. Chelsea girl, we have had soooooooooo much rain here in the middle of the mitten that I fear this could be a tough garden season. I truly enjoy the garden tours as its such fun to see what’s growing in different climates. I wish Kate success with her impending motherhood as Mama duck is busy about her nesting. Can’t wait to see the results from all that sitting!:) Looks like life on LMR is marching forward as the spring moves to summer. Soon we will be canning, freezing and storing for another long winter of all things food for the table. I think that canning is my favorite part of growing things. I think of you often as I watch your vlogs knowing that you are truly in your happy place in the garden. Happy Homesteading!!!:):):)
Your garden looks amazing! I love the rhubarb ❤️ My mum used to cook it in a bit of orange juice and add raisins to it, with a bit of sugar or honey it makes for a great dessert. Especially if you add some custard on the side 😊
Annnnd the Forest garden is just amazing!! I can just imagine how amazing it will be in a year or so!!
And the POOL!!! Yay!!!
Would love to know what pattern you used to make/ knit your poncho?
I think you’ll get some okra!! You should see mine! It grows grows too fast!
Oh I can’t wait to see the ducklings!!
I love all your video, and with all the information you inspire me to do more. Where did you order your strawberries? Love your food forest!!!
Looks amazing! Thanks so much for sharing you progress. I will have to look closer at one of my spindly rhubarbs to see if it needs dividing now.
Found one of them.

You have a nice property, beautiful work you’ve done. That’s a great space for your pool. I was looking for gardening in Zone 4, and I’m glad I found your channel.
How can I get some of those cherry trees
Omgosh!! That rhubarb looks amazing!!!! 😍😍😍

Ok! Can I PAAALEASE just come live in a hollowed out tree in your yard???? OH MY WORD, THE VIEWS ARE STUNNING!!!! Holy cow! Just gorgeous. The entire property is so beautiful. I’ll work the gardens, help with kiddos, help with animals, cook, whatever ya need! LOL
It seriously is a special place. Such a perfect place for raising your amazing family. I love what you did with the flower beds by the house. The wagon wheels make it look so beautiful! I just love that. You’ll have to post a pic here once the flowers are draped over the wagon too, I bet that’s fabulous!! Fabulous beauty for a fabulously beautiful family! We have to be long lost sisters or something ‘cause I just love you guys too much. Hahahaha
Anywho…thanks for sharing sweet friend. Always happy to get an update and find you all well and happy. Until we see you again, God Bless you dear heart and your sweet family. ~Lisa
I’ve never had luck with okra. Your garden beds look gorgeous, and your grass looks so healthy. It makes me want to remove my show and walk through it.
Pigs!!! Raspberries are off limits.
Good Morning, friends! I hope you are all doing well and have been enjoying some warm weather wherever you are. Things are starting to warm up here and it won’t be long before the garden is exploding with life. Did you plant anything this year? What are you most excited to see growing this time of year? For me it’s definitely the asparagus and rhubarb, two of my favourite things!
I’m in zone 4 and experiment a lot. I utilize many plants few consider in their food forests, but are valued for centuries, so I include. Pine, juniper, lilac, crabapple, birch, white willow, gooseberry, red lake current, raspberry, rhubarb, Hansen cherry, elderberry, dew berry, roses, dill, horseradish, seaberry, asparagus & hostas. Some are medicinals and others edibles.
Love the greenhouse! Was it a kit?
Hello from Montana, Your rhubarb looks so red. Is the flesh inside red or green? (I’ve been trying to find a red-fleshed rhubard). Thanks Diane
You can summer prune your trees (probably beginning of August) beginning of August
Almost forgot – I love love love your gardens however I can’t help but wonder how on Earth you manage weeding all of that? You mentioned mulch a few times, do you mulch the entire thing each year?
Hearing that thunder was refreshing. We don’t get a lot of rain in Colorado Springs
Oh I just love your gardens!!! The side of the house is simply gorgeous as it is!!!
Thanks for the GREAT video!!! I’ve not been feeling well so I haven’t planted my garden yet. You have inspired me to start putting it in this wk. I was so excited that my strawberries I planted last yr came up again this yr & I’ve already eaten a few of them & they’re yummy!
From your friend Amy Jones Apex, NC & N Myrtle Beach, SC
Everything looks amazing! You are living the dream I had when I was your age with young children.
And your rhubarb! As the song goes "Bee Bop a Rebop Rhubarb pie".
Love your videos. Stay safe, hugs.
My Mama was an okra guru…I can remember her putting her okra seeds in a container of very warm water to soak overnight…it softens them and gives them a jump start…then she would sow them in her rows..of course we lived in SE Ga…very warm in April…she would have so much okra she would give it away and have to cut it every day or 2…never let it get over 3 inches long she would say…lol..oh and it likes wet ground…
Love your poncho! What is the pattern name? Beautiful garden!
