Seed Starting Mixture – Pacific Northwest Outdoors

Seed Starting Mixture – Pacific Northwest Outdoors

In this episode, I use 3 tips from my YouTube friends to get a new seed starting soil mixture put together. This is a different mixture than I have used in the past, so I am hoping for better success!

The recipe came from Double Dog Farms – San Juan Island, WA, and is as follows:

1 part coconut coir (I use peat moss)
1 part perlite
1/2 part sifted compost
1/2 part sand

As part of this project, I had to build a compost sifter, so I made a variation of the one shown by John Kohler from GrowingYourGreens.com

Compost sifter video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXLwMPsl_kc

Finally, I used a great tip from MIGardener to drill some holes into the bottom of my solo cups with a boring bit in order to improve drainage (he uses poly propylene plastic in his video, but I’m just sticking to solo cups).

MIGardener’s Ultimate DIY repurposed seedling pot video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AZNoYHw3yA

Thanks to all of my fellow YouTubers for helping me on my journey to always be improving!

Just a comment – maybe find containers that are more sustainable than solo cups. Thanks for the video and info!

    Umm, two things.
    1) Ocean sand is polished smooth and not coarse/gritty enough for seed starting.
    2) wouldn’t it have a whole bunch of salt in it that would cause problems?

A 50lb bag of masonry sand is 3 or 4 dollars at Home Depot and seems a much better option.

Is that the pacific ocean behind you ?

Love seeing the ocean 🙂   Great video and info…never used sand in my mix before, but sounds like a great idea since normal soil contain sand. Enjoy your day out there!  Misilla
