Seed Starting Indoors Under Grow Lights 101

Seed Starting Indoors Under Grow Lights 101

Learning how to start seeds is one of the areas of gardening I get the most questions about…and for good reason! It’s a complicated process where many things can go wrong.

In this video, we’ll go through my current method for seed starting indoors under grow lights, including discussion of seed starting, the best trays, how to avoid leggy seedlings, and placing your lights the correct distance away from your plants.

Your videos are so helpful, thanks! I wanted to know about heating pads. I just moved to the Pacific Northwest from TJ and it’s a lot colder here. Do I need a heating pad or will a grow light provide enough heat?

  12. StarGazer on May 12, 2022 at 7:47 pm

I started Peppers, Broccoli, and Cauliflower seedlings. I am using a 24w T5 6400k grow light. I looked up what the distance should be from my seedlings.
I found everything from 4 inches to 36 inches. Right now I have it at 4 inches, but now watching your video, I am not sure what distance to use.

  13. Eloisa Herrera on May 12, 2022 at 7:49 pm

Great video! Quick question. How many hours out of the day should the lights stay on?

  14. Marcella Regal on May 12, 2022 at 7:50 pm

nasteriums grow as a weed in San Diego?!? That’s crazy. I tried growing them here in VA for the first time, and I had such a hard time with them.

  18. Bessie Cooney on May 12, 2022 at 7:54 pm

Once that start do you than plant them in a pot?

  19. Mark Kierce Design on May 12, 2022 at 7:55 pm

Awesome channel I’m glad I found it. Quick question, during the process of germination what should I be doing? To be more specific should I take the lead off at any point, besides watering when the soil is dry?

  20. Xenaer on May 12, 2022 at 7:59 pm

Do you turn the lights off at night?

  21. Wendy Cook on May 12, 2022 at 8:02 pm

You didn’t mention how to utilize the lid. Does it cinch down tight or loosely set on the top?

  29. Robert Reidy on May 12, 2022 at 8:11 pm

Do you wait for the seeds to germinate and water daily before filling the reservoir with water ?

  30. Richard Henry on May 12, 2022 at 8:11 pm

What Lux do you feel is best for seedlings? I have a meter and feel this helps with the different lights people have. Thanks.

  37. Chad Conaghan on May 12, 2022 at 8:17 pm

Hello! I am interested in buying this particular kit and there is a grow light setup that I want, but this company does not ship to Canada. Do you know of other kits that are available that ship to Canada?

Uncle, a good video. If I invest into an indoor growing system, I will grow cannabis. Not tomato.

    Thanks Brother.

  44. Lisa Larson on May 12, 2022 at 8:28 pm

I enjoy your channel! You give great how to info for new growers! So dome lids, are they necessary for indoor seed starting? I see that some YouTube gardeners do not use them, and some do. What are the pros and cons of using them? Also, I started my pepper seedlings without a dome and they did not germinate. I bottom watered. I’m guessing peppers need more warmth to germinate so I added a dome and placed them under my 6000K shop lights 24/7 to keep them warmer than the 68F nights in my kitchen. Once they germinate (hopefully its not too late), is the 6000K too much for the new seedlings if placed inches above them? How do I know if the light is too much? I don’t want the burn them when the break though the surface. Thanks! Happy growing!

How do you grow seeds in natural light or near windows?

  46. RN083012 on May 12, 2022 at 8:33 pm

I bought your book before knowing you had videos on you tube, I absolutely LOVE IT! I am a newbie at gardening indoors and your book helped me so much! Lots of good information!

  47. oG Vengeful on May 12, 2022 at 8:33 pm

I feel like it’s more simple to just eliminate the pad the wicks up water it’s just extra steps. Your soil can still wick up water without all that and just watering the bottom. Could be confusing to a new gardener.

  48. Kaitlin Mitchell on May 12, 2022 at 8:33 pm

I found this video while looking for grow light height, but learned SO much more! Thanks Kevin!
