Quitting Your Job to Farm Seeds For a Living? 🌱

Quitting Your Job to Farm Seeds For a Living? 🌱

My friend Brijette used to be a green interior designer, making beautiful living walls. Not anymore. Now she farms for seeds in her own backyard in San Diego, CA and sells them to local farmers, gardeners, and on the internet.

She’s one of, if not THE only certified organic local seed producer in the United States.
Saving seeds and creating new varieties that are adapted to local microclimates is vital in our changing climate. I think you’re going to see a lot more “Brijettes” in the future…and she’s leading the way.

In today’s episode, I visit Brijette and we walk through the process of harvesting eggplants for seed, processing them, drying them, and grading them for quality. You’ll learn how Brijette got started, but also super-interesting info about how the seeds you buy at the garden center actually get into those packets. We also talk a bit about heirloom seeds and how to save them.

  17. David on December 6, 2021 at 3:21 pm

So how is keeping the "B" seed for your farm to replant for the following year keeping the quality of the seed bank? Shouldn’t you hold some of the "A" seed back to replant?

  18. Shadow Knight Gladstay on December 6, 2021 at 3:23 pm

Went from $175 dollars for seed to $45 dollars for my garden and most of that cost is to trial new seed. Saving seed is easy.

Gold mine she discovered how American dream is making lots of money the easy wayπŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜† we were doing that my grandfather without machine but by hand but the companies said that’s other top quality no quality control, no germination test, no federal sta darts that’s third world standards and many people believed those companies … my grand father can show thousand seeds and make 900 viable plant ,the seed companies sell 10 seeds in a pocket for 2 $ and 9 viable plant wow companies 90% seed germination viability@ it’s best qualityπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ why go for ten seeds when you can plant thousands and choose 900 most vigorous seedlings πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  42. Baron Sprout on December 6, 2021 at 3:46 pm

Seems like we should all be doing this right now,
I’m new to gardening but love it, hypothetical – my veg garden is all set up for the year, can I then leave 2 or 3 of each crop in to go to seed? Or will they all cross pollinate and mess up being in the same garden?

  43. Chris Clyde on December 6, 2021 at 3:46 pm

People should never need to buy more then one pack of the same seeds. Always harvest seeds and clone to reproduce for free. A bonus is that you can share or sell. Plants are awesome!!!

  44. Nute Burn on December 6, 2021 at 3:47 pm

She’s clearly got a lot more farm to show, I would definitely love a follow up episode.

  45. Inside Jason's Mind on December 6, 2021 at 3:48 pm

Can this same process be done with all vegetable seeds? Let them over ripe then follow this same process?
