My Ikea Greenhouse Cabinet / Homegrown Garden

I’ve jumped on the IKEA greenhouse cabinet bandwagon, a trend that is sweeping across the houseplant community. In this video I’ll show you you how I’ve converted my IKEA Milsbo display cabinet into a grow space for my seedlings and vegetable plants! You’ll hear all about the set up, see my cable management, find out about where my inspiration came from and learn about how I use my accessories and Sider Farmer SF-1000 grow lights. So ironic, I am not a huge house plant person (yet) because my plants usually die from lack of light probably because I chose the wrong ones, but also because I think it’s restricting to have to put plants where they get enough light instead of where they look good in the decor. Grow lights can fix that dilemma, but can also be ugly, so I was searching the internet for attractive grow-light set ups like this and actually hadn’t found anything I liked. But I like this. Thanks for sharing, maybe I’ll become a house-plant-aholic now

Hi, what is that black tray you keep your little planters on? I don’t think I’ve seen them in any nursery before. Thank you and keep sharing your experiences, I’m learning so much from you!

  6. Trevor Wills on May 22, 2022 at 8:10 pm

Hi, did your Cape Gooseberry produce any fruit last season.I had a few outdoors and time ran out with the cold weather so I didn’t get any fruit so won’t bother growing them again.

  7. Joe Rotchell on May 22, 2022 at 8:13 pm

What is so inspirational for me is the clean look together with the practicality. I’m much more excited to use grow lights/cabinet when it becomes decorative in itself, especially as an indoor feature. Thanks lass, great content. 👍

    Brilliant job Katrina 👍

Carnivorous plant must NEVER dry out and must NEVER be fertilized. Any soil must be of low nutrition. They gain their nutrition through bugs. So I doubt they will be successful in your setup.

  12. Zeb on May 22, 2022 at 8:19 pm

I’ve worked at IKEA for about 2.5 years now and I never knew we sold these! I’m going to definitely go have a look at the range after work one day and see what there is.

Small question on the hole cutter you used to go through the base. Did you have to use a special one for metal or just any one that you’d use with wood? I’m going to make a smokeless fire pit and need to drill holes into a sheet of metal, probably thick aluminium and right in the middle of the research period.

  13. Chaddamp on May 22, 2022 at 8:20 pm

    Looks like a great setup!!

(From America): I have a huge backyard, yet I grow my seedlings in my half-basement, and every morning I take the pots out and place them in a wind-protected area of the back stairs. In the evening they return to the half-basement. Even though our last "frost" is scheduled for 4/10, my plants are already growing beautifully and ready for transplanting!!!

Great video! I’m working on putting together my greenhouse cabinet. I have also purchased a spider farmer SF1000, have you had any problems with the magnet holding up the light? I was going to store my rare tropical plants in the greenhouse, I was just worried that the magnet won’t hold up well over time. Thanks!

  17. AL P on May 22, 2022 at 8:25 pm

You should have done a video on setting up and adapting the cabinet. Always next time.

  18. Oyens on May 22, 2022 at 8:25 pm

Extremely usefull, thank you! I’m planning on using them for some tropical bonsai in my Ikea Greenhouse. So thank you!

  19. Eddy von on May 22, 2022 at 8:26 pm

Just brilliant,I just stared planting for the first time ever and when I did research to start growing and what held me back was the mess and disorganization I saw in YouTube videos 🙂 I’m not a neat freak but I am borderline lol
After watching your video and story……..PROBLEM SOLVED……this video went in my YouTube grow file.
    Thanks so much,,,spot on 👌

Now you have given me an idea and I’m going round my tiny bungalow looking for a spot to fit one in. I love IKEA anyway. I like all your setup!!

    This is the *most* genius.

  22. Telthecelt on May 22, 2022 at 8:31 pm

Looks interesting, Catrina! I can see myself buying on of those to save littering the windowsills in the winter. I’ve already started bringing in odd things from the greenhouse. I tried paraffin heating in it again last winter and that was bit of a disaster – I’m still trying to get grime off glazing.

Hello love, I must congratulate you on such a magnificent job you did on this video. Very informative and equally interesting and well executed. I am new to your channel I have seen maybe 3 videos so far and I have been quite impressed with your channel and the through and thoughtful manner you plan and produce your videos. I am quite looking forward to seeing all the other videos over time. Thank you for such an excellent performance!!

  25. Paula S on May 22, 2022 at 8:39 pm

Thank you for this, I have been looking at inside greenhouses recently, and they are soooooo ugly……. So this is very timely, as I love the aesthetic… 🙏

  26. Anthony Dowling on May 22, 2022 at 8:39 pm

Just came across your channel by chance. That set up would be ideal for me .I am in the same situation ,of living in a small flat and having an Allotment.

  31. Eric Mastenbrook on May 22, 2022 at 8:46 pm

Oh, derf. When you said “165 pounds” I was thinking that sounds a lot heavier than it looks and I was confused why you wouldn’t use kilos. Lol. I’m a dumb American.

  34. Gary z on May 22, 2022 at 8:48 pm

Lovely. I think what I am missing is the fan. My seedlings are just sitting on the windowsill and they are not as happy as yours. They need some breeze and fresh air I think.Thank you. I will sort it.: ) x

I really enjoyed this vlog as I am in the process of building a greenhouse/conservatory in Denmark, and want to include a ‘grow cabinet’ within it to enjoy whilst ‘chilling out’ in the early winter and early spring (I know what you mean about finding some time to yourself after work!). But you have weirdly reminded me of someone who I hold most dear. They trained as an Occupational Therapist in Derby, and then (as I fully expected!) gained a PhD and now work in Nottingham at the QMC. Sorry if this comment is irrelevant, but you do remind me of them! Lovely vlog, glad I got to watch it. Keep it up!

Also, carnivorous plants that come from temperate zones, need winter rest in cold conditions.

Last Sunday 3/21, I started this year’s vegetable seeds. I garden in zone 4 Minnesota, USA so I have about 8 weeks until the last frost date. My indoor set up is an inexpensive 4 shelf unit with a heavy plastic cover. I don’t have a window with good sunlight so I have LED grow lights for each shelf.

  47. Librado Castro on May 22, 2022 at 9:04 pm

I see some beautiful home plants please let me see them on a video thanks

Hi again, I was wondering if you could explain how the spider farmer’s electrical cord is running down the side of the cabinet. Is the glass shelf not resting on the tab that comes along with the cabinet in that one corner? Thanks!
