MFG 2016: Planting Thyme a Perennial Herb Using the Over-Seeding Method: Start Early!

Many herbs can be planted using an over-seeding method. That is, putting a lot of seeds in a single cell. I start my herbs, here in Maryland Zone 7, 10-12 weeks before they are ready to go outside. The over-seeding method lets me save space and I get 4 plants from a single cell. This can be done with your perennial herbs like Oregano, Thyme and Chives. If you watched 1 of the 3 videos on these herbs, you don’t have to watch them all (LOL). The principle is the same.

thanks a lot. this was precisely what i was looking for. i am also curios how "pros" grow it big time. like how they create those transplants you buy in your local garden center. i managed to grow couple herbs from seeds but it was long and painful process with no guarantee. i was mostly successful with basil and thyme. my problem was weak stems and leggy plants.

Do you need to grow them at a certain time of the year? Want to start growing lavender, thyme, and sage seedlings.

I tried to grow thyme twice already but none of them germinated. I don’t have a grow light and I live in a humid country. Do you suggest to cover them with a plastic bag and leave them outside or should they stay indoors?

Hey Gary. I have some Thyme growing but they are very weak and rather than gaining height they seem to be spooling just on top the soil in my pot. Is this normal?

Why is it that the thyme sold in the market those not grow after planting it.

  18. Another Human on May 26, 2022 at 8:35 pm

I’m confused at the next step for propagating vegetables, I have them growing like yours, do I repot the individual best growths in individual pots?

  19. Leona Johnson on May 26, 2022 at 8:36 pm

I wish I saw this video 1st. I was told that thyme takes for ever and almost believed that. I decided to try again and almost screamed when 2 days later I had sprouts. After 3 months of trying with nothing.

I have organic soil from sungro black/gold. It has fertilizer of 0.05/0.0/0.0.. will this be safe to grow thyme seeds. I know herbs don’t really need fertilizer. Should I buy a separate soil for growing herb seeds?

  22. Dennis B. on May 26, 2022 at 8:42 pm

When should i start to feed these fertilizer & what kind ? how much ? Last spring my thyme & oregano were up about 2" & i gave them a feeding of 1spoon of M-gro in a gallon of water & killed the whole works .. Thanks

For something like creeping thyme, at what growth stage would I be able to plant the plugs outside?

  24. Karen Bee on May 26, 2022 at 8:45 pm

I planted mine on 5.9 in natural like. I’m also zone 7, in the Piedmont of NC. They’re leggy and small, just cotyledons. I think my Mars TSL-2000 at 50% dim may be too hot for them. Do they need full sun?

  25. Matthew Webb on May 26, 2022 at 8:45 pm

    Succinct. Thank you

  26. Nayana Vora on May 26, 2022 at 8:46 pm

  27. Yep Nah on May 26, 2022 at 8:47 pm

I am thinking on growing creeping thyme for a ground cover. Should I apply the same concept on this video?

  28. Lacey Hilty on May 26, 2022 at 8:49 pm

Can you use the over seeding method for other herbs? Such as Dill, Mint, Cilantro and Lavender?

  29. Lynne Wolf on May 26, 2022 at 8:50 pm

Is it compulsory that seed cells are used or can we grow them in pots directly?

  32. Τρίσα Μάι on May 26, 2022 at 8:59 pm

How many days to germinate thyme?

  33. Esthetic Empire on May 26, 2022 at 9:00 pm

how do you mix your soil? do you use seedling soil? my seeds never grow, or they grow a little and die.
