Zone 6. I put down carrot and Alaska pea seeds. There is about 2 to 4 inches of barn manure/shavings. Then a layer of hay. All in a cold frame/tunnel. Was this foolish? First time gardening after moving from California.

Hi great info I live in 7a and we have been having beautiful weather 60s during the day and mid 30s at night.. My garlic I planted in November is really starting to take off.. I’ve been keeping it mulched because our last frost date is April 25th but my soil is really wet from rain.. Should I remove the mulch so it can dry out
    . Concerned about root rot

I know that this is a year old but im curious about starting kale indoors?
I start kale and spinach in the fall, they stay small and look dead over the winter and shoot up fast and get huge early in the spring. Zone 6

Super helpful, I’m a novice gardener and I’m just too lazy to make a notebook of what things to do when – I’ll probably reference this video series for a couple years until I either retain the information myself or muster up the will to write these things down. Looking forward to the April guide. Thank you!

  25. Lisa Petric on October 28, 2021 at 11:06 am

Finally, someone who answered my question. Can you tell me about when I can direct sow onion seed outside in zone 6 (Ohio just south of Cleveland). We’re pushing the end of March. I’m a teacher. Spring Break is coming up. For the first time in years, they aren’t predicting Noah’s floods for our spring so I’d like to get things started.

I’m a science teacher and we are all shut out of school due to corona. I’m trying to learn how to garden and sharing the experience with my students on my YouTube channel. This video was REALLY helpful to me as I don’t know what I’m doing. For example, I was about to plant tomato plants outdoors a couple of days ago when my neighbor/gardening expert stopped me because it is WAY too early to do that. Thanks again. I subscribed and look forward to more of your videos.

In Zone 6B, Kentucky. Glad to find your channel. Very helpful

  37. louise jacobs on October 28, 2021 at 11:24 am

You may want to add broad beans to your repertoire. I started mine last week, and when they are a bit bigger they get replanted into milk crates (9 plants per crate), and put into the greenhouse until its time to plant my tomatoes. Then they get lugged out and set in a sheltered spot (its very windy where we live) to keep growing. I get a decent harvest from them. When the weather warms up, I also plant more in the main garden.

I have the worst luck gardening one year…. Black ants raids everything in sight. What is the best solution to avoid from recurring ?

  41. Bruce Loder on October 28, 2021 at 11:29 am

I’ll be 70 in 4 months and have been gardening many years. I also took the Master Gardener course years ago. Here in zone 6 where I live, I’ve always planted potatoes on St Patty’s Day, unless it was too wet, snow, etc. The latest I ever went past that date was two weeks once, and my crop was late coming in, of course. I have never covered my potatoes. I also plant the whole potato, not pieces as most do. I think, if I remember, you do also? By planting on St Patty’s Day, I harvest the third week of June. I like to plant some blue, or purple potatoes, as they are said to have 4 times the antioxidants of other potatoes, but they don’t get very large, so I plant Yukon Gold as well. I plant on hills in rows, 50′ long, and usually two rows. I used drip tape with a timer so watering is a breeze. I used to plant more, but now I don’t get any help planting, harvesting, etc. and my body isn’t up to more.

I find your emails informative. I’m always trying to learn more. We should never think we know it all. I learn new stuff every year. Like two years ago when I ran across You Tube explaining using cattle panels to make arches for vining plants to climb. I built my first one in 2018 and it was great. This year I’ll build more. I’m also thinking of building a small green house using old storm windows on framed walls and plastic stretched over cattle panels for the roof. You have to stay active or the body wants to stop moving! Gardening in Kansas

2nd year gardener here, itโ€™s funny how much harder it is this year now that I know way more yet oh sooo little still. ๐Ÿคฃ
I do a LOT of containers in my tiny zone 6a yard. So my big question is… can I sew seeds outside in containers the same way I would in the ground in the early spring???
