July Vegetable Garden Tour | Growing Food In Alaska
July Vegetable Garden Tour | Growing Food In Alaska
After putting our sawmill to use and building a flower planter box for our new garden entrance, we give you a full tour of our high tunnel and outdoor garden area.
With the short growing season in Alaska we focus on high production and preserving what crops we grow. July, however, is a month of abundance and we can harvest fresh food each day while still ensuring there is enough produce to preserve later in the season.
We take a quick peek at our mini orchard to see how the fruit trees and flowers are coming along this year.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure ๐
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! ๐

hi
Winter Squash In The High Tunnel Again?
You guys have no idea how profoundly healing you are. I love everything you post. It gives me hope to see the beauty of your young spirits living off the land.
Nice. What part of AK do you live in?
i heard squash and cucumbers do better if you direct so in ground but dont know if you can do that with such a short season
At 40:07โฆ.what is Hunterโs rock? Is that a memorial for a pet that had passed away or is it actually buried there? Iโm just curious because I havenโt heard you talk about a pet named Hunter until then and Iโve only ever seen Bo and Bandit in the videos so I was just wondering.
It’s hard to tell sometimes if a channel is genuine or just another iteration of the latest YouTube fad. I burned 12 broccoli and 4 cauliflower following advice on YouTube and had to flood them with water to save them. I so appreciate that you always say so if something is your first experience and give the rationale for how you are doing it. I would love a video on fertilizing. Your garden is always so lush. Love your channel and can’t stop watching! You guys are the real deal!
If the clover is something abundant enough you could make clover tea too, it’s one of my partner’s favorite teas since he’s grown up on an aussie property and made it every year. Simply drying the flowers and it makes a very nice sweet tea. I love these videos so much, seriously I binge a whole playlist straight for enjoyment. ๐
Itโs very rare to see a couple work together so very well, I think thatโs whatโs missing nowadaysโฆ.Iโm new to your channel and enjoy yโallโs content. So a big Hey Yall from South Georgia ๐
WOW great video
wow y’all
Y el boo
Kalendula is good for tea too, not just a pretty flower (at least the ones we have here in Latvia) ๐
I’m putting a bee in your bonnet (figuratively – I’m sure you have plenty of bees in your bonnet alread for real!) . There is a couple here in the wet mountains of Colorado who farm intesively as you do. The grow many, many tomatoes at 8100′ elevation near Westcliffe Colorado. They occasionally get as cold as -31ยฐF in winter (though in general it’s not as cold as what you guys get). Despite the name ‘wet mountains’ the climate is dry and soils are rocky and poor (I think the name is because the range and valley below is ‘wet’ compared to the rest of the Rocky Mountain region – we are so, so dry here!).
Anyway, I had the pleasure to meet Penn and Cord Parmenter when they presented a small lecture years ago at the Denver Botanic Gardens. It was very informative in general, but what caught my attention most was their small greenhouse design. It’s a totally passive solar greenhouse that regulates the temperature inside with stored water in drums. It has decent ventilation as well.
Penn has been able to grow her beloved tomatoes all year around in her original 10’x13′ reclaimed wood window and door greehouse on the mountain. You guys might be able to grow cold crops all winter and get a good early start on the warm season veggies (yay – house space beck)! https://www.pennandcordsgarden.com/greenhouses.html (her original one is about half way down the page).
I live in Fairbanks area and will be starting to garden soon. Any books, tips, resources for figuring out what to plant. Not a lot of resources on YouTube for zone 1 that I have found.

Do you have a degree in horticulture?
hard working couple
It just dawned on me that by the time I was 7 years old my younger brother and I already knew which plants were edible and which ones were not, all because my mother’s devious almost villain like master plan to keep her garden nice and weed free til I got into highschool. She would have us pull the weeds in her vegetable garden until we both had 4 knee high piles before she gave us our allowances so we could go to the arcade and hang out with our friends every weekend! ๐ณ๐ค

Rub fresh lemon balm leaves on your exposed skin such as neck, forehead, cheeks to repel mosquitoes. They will not like to bite into skin that has the fresh oils of this herb on it.
Great tour. Thanks.
Scapes can be pickled as well
