Indoor Grow Lights | $ vs $$$ Comparison

Indoor Grow Lights | $ vs $$$ Comparison

This year I have been experimenting with some different growlights, to see which ones grow the best seedlings. I have a range of price points here, from free old fluorescent shop lights, to T5 LED light bars, to a Mars Hydro full spectrum LED light bar. I was shocked to discover how much fast the seedlings grew with the increased light supplied by the better light options, and how different the light meter readings were from light to light.

Here are some resources for different light options.

  3. Michael Oxendine on April 25, 2022 at 6:43 pm

Have you tried any sort of hydroponic set up?
I’m wondering if I could use the mid-range LEDs for the entire life cycle of the plant growing hydroponically.

Hi there. Nice video. What app are you using please

  5. sassycakes811 on April 25, 2022 at 6:46 pm

Are the lights that you recommend in your description the LED lights that made everything grow fast? I’m confused because it says LED shoplights. Thank you

  6. Sarah Bennett on April 25, 2022 at 6:48 pm

Really great video. Question: Regarding the "medium price option." Do you think it’s mainly the LED lights or the nanotech reflector that is making it so much better than the flourescent? When I looked online for the nanotech reflectors, they came with non-led lights.

  15. Laura Downs on April 25, 2022 at 6:58 pm

This is awesome thank you for the video and comparison, do you have a video showing a full grown plant with the Mars light

  16. kdub dubber on April 25, 2022 at 6:58 pm

OHh i went through all the same stuff you mention. I changed my lighting, built an insulated 5×2′ cabinet. I can grow 400 plants in it but the first year was amazing to see how fast it all happened and I definitely wasn’t ready for them to do that. They were ready weeks ahead of May long.

  17. Sean Ham on April 25, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Quick question… when you said it got sunburned, is it because of the actual heat? Does LED produce heat? Can you not dim the light?

  18. Reyna Esther on April 25, 2022 at 6:59 pm

This video helps me a lot!! Thanks!

  19. Kathy Gausvik on April 25, 2022 at 7:00 pm

  21. Scott Steward on April 25, 2022 at 7:03 pm

How do I get that light app for my phone hon. That would be so beneficial to have 🙏✌👌

  22. BeLiZe KaViar on April 25, 2022 at 7:07 pm

When I follow your link to Mars light bar, I don’t see them…they u use..?

  23. Jessica H on April 25, 2022 at 7:07 pm

Thanks for the video! Can I ask, how long did you leave the other lights on. You mentioned leaving the cheapies on 24 hours a day. About how many hours did you leave on the nicer lights?

  24. wordvendor1 on April 25, 2022 at 7:08 pm

    Really great video!

  25. OhShootKid on April 25, 2022 at 7:12 pm

  26. jen sissons on April 25, 2022 at 7:12 pm

How do you water with lights below to stop water getting on the electrics?

  27. Lydia O on April 25, 2022 at 7:13 pm

Love the comparison, thank you for showing the different lights.

  28. Elemental Earth on April 25, 2022 at 7:14 pm

    Awesome thanks so much

  29. BeLiZe KaViar on April 25, 2022 at 7:14 pm

And the " light – app" as you say, is reading LUX not the "light".

  30. jonathan williams on April 25, 2022 at 7:15 pm

Number one is adding 3% washed white sand, . added drainage, . add 25% Perlite, and bat guano, cow poop, rabbit Poop, . baby chicken oyster shell grit, . 1/2 cup to 30 pounds of potting soil. I add 40% top soil, as it wont rot, as all potting soil, is forest ground up trees, . no organic nitrogen, . so augment lots of Red Worms, in the soil as well. . NO chemicals, . NEVER. It does NOT matter which lights U use, . if your soil is no good, . soil is VERY important. . Ecclieasties 9:10, . King James Holy, . Bible. study marijuana growers, . potting soil.

  31. Craig Hastie on April 25, 2022 at 7:16 pm

Money saved by not generating the extra heat will save you the extra money compared to shop lights in a fairly short amount of time, particularly given the soaring cost of electricity.

  32. Susanna Dzejachok on April 25, 2022 at 7:19 pm

Excellent content, would like to shut off the repetitive background music.

  33. John Spence on April 25, 2022 at 7:20 pm

I don’t believe you should EVER leave a light on 24 hours…all plants require down time

  34. hussstler786 on April 25, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Nice video! How far was the mars hydro from the seedlings and at what percentage of the light were you running?

  35. Lisa Billard on April 25, 2022 at 7:24 pm

Great video. I appreciate all the knowledge you share and explaining each type of lighting.

  36. Dennis Shoemaker on April 25, 2022 at 7:24 pm

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! You answered some of my questions about grow lights!

  37. Candice B on April 25, 2022 at 7:24 pm

I was getting a little stressed out with the options. I have a small garden. i just wanted a small garage setup for max 72 seedlings. And omg, so many options. So i really appreciated this. I’ll just get some LED shop lights.

  38. Lindsay Ingram on April 25, 2022 at 7:24 pm

Which led lights do you think are the best? There are so many varieties (t5, t8, t12, different lumens and kelvins, etc). I will be purchasing in Canada 🇨🇦

  39. C Lea on April 25, 2022 at 7:25 pm

Wow I want that set up!!!

  40. divinelotus19 on April 25, 2022 at 7:28 pm

My gosh your cracky voice. 😑 I had to lower the volume all the way and use subtitles.

  41. Captain Ron on April 25, 2022 at 7:29 pm

This is a wonderfully informative video! I’m in the process of replacing my SunBlaster T5’s with the SunBlaster T5 LED, which looks like the lights you’re using. I’m wondering what distance you keep these lights above your peppers and tomatoes?

Cheers and thanks for the video.

  42. Nathan Surrett on April 25, 2022 at 7:34 pm

This was fantastic, thank you for the realistic and practical information. Best video I’ve seen on grow lights for seedlings. Thank you!

  43. eScential on April 25, 2022 at 7:35 pm

I have retinal thinning, maybe permanently distortion for reading, from my growlight. Surprised it is hard to find info on this.

  44. M. A. Nelson on April 25, 2022 at 7:36 pm

You could, and maybe should, raise the full spectrum LED light to about a meter above and put more seedlings under it, in a bigger area, since it seems to provide more coverage. I understand a MarsHydro 150 watt LED light will cover the whole lifecycle, per square meter of fruiting plants.

  45. Rick Ovsky on April 25, 2022 at 7:37 pm

PLEASE do a video on the nutrient content of your veggies, if you grow indoors 100% of the time, underneath artificial lights, that is

  46. Trisha Dingillo on April 25, 2022 at 7:38 pm

Awesome video! How many of those cheap t5 LEDs would you hang if you set your flats longways – 4 per shelf? Is 3 lights enough or would you recommend 4?

  47. My Point of Blue on April 25, 2022 at 7:38 pm

very informative video! planning to start some veggies indoors as a first time gardener! 🙂
