What about mulch? I’ve already got mulch in my garden, should I move it from the sow site until the seeds sprout? Then replace the mulch?

I don’t want to start seeds indoors or outdoors. I just want to direct sow them into their permanent home. I do worry about birds, squirrels, and other pests and diseases getting to them while they are itty bitty.
