never add anything to the bottom of your containers "for drainage". Water cannot easily pass through different substrates and as a result, will slow down and sit in the root zone longer than recommended -potentially causing root rot or drowning. BAD ADVICE !! Purchase containers that have sufficient drainage.

LOVE growing my own herbs. I have a small herb garden with rosemary, thyme, french tarragon, greek oregano, garlic chives, chives and sage. I have to plant the basil under a screened "cage" to keep the insects from eating it all. It’s more than I need, so when I pinch them back several times over the growing season, if I can’t use it, I dry it and put them in jars to use over the winter.

No more mint plants for me, iit took over the whole yard even killing the Monkey Grass (which seemed indestructible). I never did get it all out. Has happened to friends as well.
I can recommend adding a bay plant (that you get bay leaves from, not sure about the English term). The difference between dried and fresh bay leaves is immense!

I would add Tarragon and Chervil, also Lovage for soups and stews.

Wish I’d seen this 6 years ago. I finally learned to water enough, about five years ago, and to dock the plants last year; anxious to do better drainage this spring, and see what happens.
Iโve had Parsley ๐ฟ & Basil ๐ฑ planted & thriving in a pot (sane size as he showed) all winter. Apparently, these 2 plants donโt minds sharing real estate. A south or southwest exposure is the best in winter.
