How To Grow Seedlings Indoors (NZ No Dig Gardening Winter 2020)

How To Grow Seedlings Indoors (NZ No Dig Gardening Winter 2020)

In this months no dig garden video you’re going to see what to grow from seed in late winter indoors.

First, I start by showing my setup for indoor seedlings and my reasoning for why to use seed mix.
The next thing I show is how to start seedlings and share a simple gardening tip about using a heat mat to help the seeds germinate.

Next, I talk all about what seeds to start indoors for spring and summer planting. In particular these are summer seedlings of the nightshade variety (eggplants, chillies, capsicums and tomato’s) And I show you exactly how to sow seeds in seed trays.

Finally, I show what has happened since I sowed the seeds in trays 2 weeks ago and how I help maintain them in terms of watering, sunlight and hardening off to get them ready for planting in the future months.

Hopefully this month’s gardening video helps you in your garden.

I have just been on their website and can’t find that seed organiser in any of the obvious places. Can you remember what it is called? Thanks.😊

Thanks for this video. I live in Christchurch and am wanting to grow more veggies this year and growing so from seed is so cost effective.

I make my own Bio-Char and use that in my seedlings.
Better than inside, is my small nursery / glass house in the sunny front yard.

This is a great video, I have done seedlings but have grown spindly and so now i know they need more sun than the window that they were in.

Hi thanks for many great videos. Any other tips for alternative heat pads? Do u think wheat pad could work or opposite heat pump

I’m in auckland northcote and just started growing. I put some tomatoes seeds I collected from supermarket and some from packets only 10 days ago and they are all 3cms high already. Enjoying seeing your videos alot and learning alot. Thank you.

Just put up the exact same table in my sunroom for my seed trays. 🙂 I planted peas direct into the garden yesterday – my main problem is the birds, so covered them well with netting. Perhaps I should buy a heat pad – hmmm. Still pretty cold at night here in Raglan. Good to see another nz gardener gearing up for spring

Hi there I see you use king seeds any specific reason? or as long their purchased from reputable seed company

  16. Luisa Aleamotua on October 22, 2021 at 10:38 am

Thanks for sharing. After your last video I went and bought me the seedling case from Spotlight. However, I notice you have a special pen to use when labeling your seedlings. What type are they. I want to get some. Will start my seedlings tomorrow.

Excellent info advice and explanations. I’m in Oz now and its great to have a fellow Kiwi guide me though “what to do next”: keep the videos coming, they are much appreciated

Another great video thanks! Growing from seed is such a buzz. Just picked up a seed organiser from Spotlight (like yours) and is way easier to plan for seed raising. I loved your tip about rotating the tray so the seedlings grow straighter. Looking forward to spring (and your next video). Started gardening in lockdown in Auckland and déjà vu….

What month do you start doing this?

  20. Irie Neophyte on October 22, 2021 at 10:52 am

Thanks very much. Starting my first garden beds at home and it’s great to get advice and see first hand demo"s of all those little things I have to learn and do. Nothing like a bit of scary global catastrophe to make me realise my precarious reality, and motivate me to grow food, learn to love and respect our beautiful mother earth. Cheers

We watch your videos for homeschooling – they are a great resource – thank you!

  22. Joey Hardin on October 22, 2021 at 10:54 am

Good morning, Elien. Love the video, thanks. Hoping all your seeds take hold and grow strong. 41 days until fall begins, Spring for you. I am in the process of getting a high tunnel here. Had one ordered and could not get the plastic so I had to go with a different company. Looking forward to the fall crops. I am going to let the garden go fallow this year but hopefully the high tunnel will make up for it. God bless and be safe

  23. Roanna Jellyman on October 22, 2021 at 10:57 am

Wow you start them so early! Great explainations for reasoning though, much appreciated. I’m so eager to start my seedlings but must resist for another 2 weeks…. Gah!

Your keeping me on track thanks. What are you still eating in at the moment?
