Just a head’s up, the link posted for the average season lengths is wrong (or has changed since you posted). It should be: https://www.farmersalmanac.com/average-frost-dates ๐Ÿ™‚

Santa Clara County here: also zone 9B. I’ve gotten some massive korean cucumbers that I grew from seeds that are sold in korean grocery stores. very prolific, great for eating fresh as well as for pickling. Also grew some massive 1.5lb korean squash as well from the grocery store seed packets. Since you live up in Sac, you may want to check with Koreana market =)

What nickname do your colleagues have for you?

  16. Conscious Being on July 19, 2022 at 10:41 pm

I am so stoked that I found your channel!
Firstly, thank you for encouraging supporting local โ€œmom & pop shopโ€™sโ€!
At this particular time in history, itโ€™s needed more than ever.
I am on the coast, just south of San Francisco (10a), and I am hoping to get a little garden going.
What are your thoughts on greenhouses? We were thinking about getting a greenhouse because of the pest and raccoon activity in our area.
I have been binge watching your channel for the past few days, and I have learned so much already!
    Many Thanks๐Ÿ™

New sub here. As a retiree, I should have a better garden. If only I’ve heard you a long time ago, I’d be an expert by now. I also live in your hometown.

  18. Rubie Baker on July 19, 2022 at 10:42 pm

Last year we tried ‘sunburst’ patty pan squash and they were PROLIFIC. They’re relatively compact bushes and the squash grow right at the center. They’re quick to pick and eat small and are a great color and flavor. Everyone who saw them loved them and they out performed all my other squash. I’m in Salt Lake City UT zone 7b

  19. Jasmine Fleming on July 19, 2022 at 10:47 pm

Hi! I love your videos. They are very helpful. Where do you find your Carmen Sweet Pepper seeds at?

  24. laneea cannon on July 19, 2022 at 10:52 pm

How did the Italian tomatoes grow and store for you? How was the taste?

  25. orange moon glows on July 19, 2022 at 10:52 pm

you could also grow mustards that act as natural fumigants of soil nematodes.

  26. Karen Latham on July 19, 2022 at 10:53 pm

The how many days in your growing season that goes to farmers almanac doesn’t work properly. They must have taken down that page or something. Or it just doesn’t work on my phone.

  27. Edith Forch on July 19, 2022 at 10:53 pm

Hi Kyle, great content. Love all your seed selections and the companies you buy from. Urban Seattle, zone 8, shady yard. My most favorite tomato is Costoluto Genovese. Fantastic taste fresh for sandwiches but it also makes the best sauce. I donโ€™t have to grow two kinds. Reliable and prolific. Add King of Siberia. Amazing yellow. I swear by Queen of Malinalco tomatillo which I also eat crunchy and fresh in salads. Adjvarski is a pepper that is yummy fresh but also makes a very, very good roasted pepper for storage. I have trouble having enough sunny days nor the room to grow winter squashes but Red Kuri never disappoints. So many others. Mostly Baker Creek because I choose to buy from great companies that promote diversity in the seeds as well as their staff.

  28. Dave Gorski on July 19, 2022 at 10:54 pm

Another great video…you mentioned storing seeds in a cool dry place but didnโ€™t get too specific. My dad always save his in the refrigerator…is that the best place?

  29. robert domingo on July 19, 2022 at 10:55 pm

Kyle, do you ever get reprimanded by the state of California for your water consumption? My sister lives just a little southwest of Sacramento and gets in trouble with a garden much smaller than yours.

  30. Matt Crea on July 19, 2022 at 10:55 pm

Do you have a link for you muncher/greenhouse Cucumber or something similar?

  31. Amie Rummenie on July 19, 2022 at 10:56 pm

Sonoma County: Its been a few years since I’ve grown but I have a great garden going this year. Multiple tomatoes, peppers, radish, watermelon, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, turnips, green beans, basil, strawberries! Its going to be delicious!

  34. Brink Shows on July 19, 2022 at 11:05 pm

As a kid i had a small garden in a shaddy corner of my parents garden. I always bought seedlings. Now i have my own garden (iam 22) i have still bought quite a bit of seedslings but iam trying to get different crops from the seeds. Today i planted my first Corn outside, my tomatoes are just comming out of their little seed shells. Next month iam going to start my beans and some other vegetables. If all goes well i want to only buy seeds next year. It would cut costs quite a bit down and would be way more fun gardening from seed than seedling.

  37. Nunya Bizness on July 19, 2022 at 11:07 pm

    Zone: 6B.
    First Fall Frost: October 2.
    Last Spring Frost: May 14.
    Growing Season: 140 days.

This was good information. Thanks for showing us how to find it. This is also helpful for someone with a shorter growing season, because it’s helpful to remember not to compare my garden with yours. You have twice as long a growing season as I do! Your first frost is two months later (December), and your last frost is three months earlier (February) — so you have five more months to grow food outside than we do here! This is helpful for perspective. Good video.

Tomato: Brad’s Atomic Grape. Very good flavor, I prefer lower acidity. Weirdest tomato I have seen. I’m in El Dorado Hills but they were grown by my son in Orangevale.

Hi, just found your channel! You are exactly what I need. Your content, knowledge and talented presentation manner is just perfect for me! We have just purchase 4 acres on French Australia and starting our garden from scratch ๐Ÿ˜ณ due to covid I have ordered 20 fruit trees online. They are in serious need of you visiting Australia ๐Ÿ˜œ. I was so pleased to finding your channel, I just had comment on how much I have learnt from you sharing.

  44. Kyle Manasseh on July 19, 2022 at 11:17 pm

They all will grow dumbass you garden so small makes ur brain small. Canโ€™t see how powerful a seed is….. If only you have an acre or actually been gardening for over 10 years stupid you donโ€™t know what real gardening is

  45. Michael McMillan on July 19, 2022 at 11:18 pm

I’m next to you, in Solano county. My favorite tomato is Big Rainbow, dinosaur kale is easy, and rainbow chard.

How’d those smuggled Italian tomatoes end up storing this fall and winter?

  49. Helen McClellan on July 19, 2022 at 11:22 pm

What seeds do you recomend we grow in Cleveland, TN for a beginner gardener like me (this will be our first garden)?

  50. gardengrrlWendy on July 19, 2022 at 11:25 pm

I’m south of walnut creek, zone 9b. I’ve had trouble starting seeds in the past (germinate well, but then they stop growing), so I’m game to try again. I’d be interested to see how you’ll start your seeds (indoors or outdoors), and any special equipment you use (like grow lights, or just a bright window). Thx for the seed recs!!
