that’s a big help. I live in Calgary, and I have several old peony bushes that came with the house. Don’t know what to do with them. They are such a standard on the Prairies, and they’re always packed in close to the foundation of the house, so I thought that’s where they have to be. Other standards on the prairies are lilacs and day lilies, they all go together, along with the 10 or 15′ caragana hedges, and the rows of poplars and spruce used for windbreaks, especially where it’s very flat.
So I have big single blooms, very dark red, that the bees just love, and some very pale and fragrant double, just stuffed in a corner by the steps, and some darker pink fragrant, also stuffed into a corner. Several more in the back yard that are kind of dormant, as the dog chewed them, but there is still life. I’ll get someone to help me put in a proper bed from them and move them out to a more central place.

I use hoops or stakes for all my peonies. I have a neighbor with a beautiful Festiva Maxima peony that flops to the ground after the first rain. It makes me cringe and I’ve thought about sneaking down there and cutting off some blooms😀! It doesn’t bother the plant though. Peonies are awesome but do require a little bit a maintenance. They need to be supported and watched for Botrytis. And when the petals start to fall they can become an unsightly mess if you’re a picky gardener. I have found its best to dead head them before petal drop. Even though it’s painful to cut off blooms that still kinda look okay. Wouldn’t live without them!
