Herb Garden || A Beginners Guide || Nature Walk
Hi friends welcome to Swap2Green
I was on a recent visit to the Auckland Botanical herb garden fascinating as usual for me so I thought of sharing my experience with all of you the herb garden was an initiative by the Auckland herb society developed in the late 1970s and the oldest garden on the property. It was a work day for me but believe me once I reached the venue all my stress and exhaustion was gone then I realized this is the best place to unwind greeted by an electric mix of aromas wafting
in the air my channel is all about staying close to nature and adopting a lifestyle that’s more natural leading to a healthier body and mind which is why this trip is very much a part of that journey.
Those who know me know that i love plants and herbs are my personal favorites being versatile they can be ornamentals in a perennial garden used as medicine or
as food flavonoids perfumes cosmetics and even in spiritual rites the word herb has been derived from the latin word herba and an old french word herbe.
Nowadays herb refers to any part of the plant like fruit seed stem bark flowers leave stigma or a root as well as a non-woody plant. There are around 75 to 100
types of herbs and flowers in the national library of medicine herb garden for your kitchen garden however you need just a few here’s a quick list
1. basil
2.cilantro
3. dill
4. mint
5. oregano
6. parsley
7. italian and curly rosemary
8. lemongrass and
9.bay leaves
As I stroll the magic of herbs is already intoxicating me their green color is a feast for my tired eyes the heady aroma is working wonders on me aided by the bird chirps so much more melodious than the tweets we are now used to on our phones. The lush green geraniums a powerhouse that helps with lot of health conditions including skin care how to use it get your hands on them or make geranium oil just add only a few drops in a carrier oil cream or water because it’s always concentrated it’s also a natural insect repellent. I had made a video on insect rippling herbs don’t forget to have a peek
Rosemary from spicing up meat dishes to being an essential oil with health benefits to a remedy for failing memory do check my video on rosemary for those who are interested I’ve just left the link above
Calendulas another favorite of mine adds more than just color to any garden an all-purpose flour it’s always around your home garden kitchen medicine cabinet what have you calendars are used in tea creams ointment oils and as extracts.
I keep walking and see lovely patches of Lavender Chamomile and Marigolds hiding between stopping in between to smell the flowers but my big discovery today Cardoon plants a nutrient rich vegetable roasted or boiled or an addition in stews or soups and leaves are cooked to be used in salad leaves help in the functioning of liver and gallbladder not to mention production of bile and reduction of blood cholesterol.
