HI, CaliKim! I brought home a gorgeous REAL white sweet potato this summer from Idaho. I let it sprout and then grow roots. My question is: Can I grow these splits now (mid October) in SoCal (south Riverside)? And if so, what is the best course of action…. indoors? outdoors protected growboxes? In the dirt? Other? I usually just do sprouts in the winter time, but now I’m encouraged to try and expand my indoor gardening. Thanks for another great video.
I just bought everything to grow salad through the winter indoors. I found a 6pack of window pots. I got all dwarf seeds. I’m going to try dwarf tomato dwarf cucumber bell pepper and lettuce and Swiss chard and spinach maybe some bush beans. I have 3 southern facing windows and may have to add some grow lights. Diluted hydrogen peroxide works great to kill off fungus knats and the plants love it.

Hey there, thank you for this. I am going to be putting seeds in the soil today in my basement container garden. Do you have links for your smart pot drip trays? Sometimes it looks like you have those under a smart pot or two, and others you don’t have. That’s one thing that took me a while to find, and they still don’t fit properly. I always have this debate with my husband (not extreme like), about growing food during autumn and winter. This spring i asked him to pick up some spinach seeds and he got perpetual spinach/ chard basically. Ok, not exactly the same thing as true baby spinach but i worked with it until summer. I planted too much, we aren’t heavy salad eaters, like lettuce. I mainly used the baby sprouts for sandwiches and the bigger ones for cooking.
Mainly, it’s about salads and herbs as a food source. During winter, we still have our rosemary and oregano fairing the winter. We also have a lot of it dried and stored during summer. corriander/ cilantro just didn’t like inside or out this year. We also bought a new sage plant as it died immediately. The new one is not liking it’s new home indoors.
I am going to order some true spinach seeds but he is like, it’s not really growing veg….
He is ok with garlic and maybe carrots, you know like stuff in the garden but these don’t count? Don’t worry there’s no drama, it is just that general question or ignorance around what we can actually grow during the cold months.
We have brought in our inside/outside pots of tomatoes and courgettes. Between the kitchen and garden we have a small utility area. I built a pallet chair next to the washing machine originally for the colder days but now it serves as a nice place to watch the birds, laptop on the washing machine in the evenings, means that i can watch youtube garden videos in peace on a makeshift desk! lol
Behind me is the old school English toilet w/ door and beyond that a workshop room (about the size of a UK single bedroom). It is all sealed off with conservatory windows, so a narrow walkway but it means we can get the containers indoors away from the bad weather we have had this year and still get backup crops.
Sorry for the convoluted explanation of the layout but it is parallel to our full sun main veggies bedding area. We use the space to transition the crops in spring and to shelter our core container backups in bad weather and bring inside, in autumn. Easy of access isn’t great but it still give the plants a bit more time by a month.
Even with the serious planting last autumn, due to the lack of seeds in 2020, i have learnt so much this year watching your videos, so thank you very much! We may have different climates but adapting it to our own micro climate specific to our OWN gardens, gives us the core info we need to improve each each year.
When we moved into my first house 7 years, we only grew strawberries, tomatoes, mint and house plants/ flowers. My step father in law taught me a lot about growing fruit and veg. He had spent many years developing a hybrid tomato seed. Sadly he passed away in 2018. These seeds are his heritage. Our only variety of this plus the moneymaker and beefsteak maramande in the bedding was destroyed this year due to the storms. My MIL only uses the telephone and lives on an Island, so i am hoping the message to save the seeds for us gets through!

Yup. Got down to 24° here in N. Eastern Oregon. My runner bean plant is toast. I brought a bunch of plants indoors, so I’ll still have some harvest hopefully.

One thing that I really enjoyed growing last winter was radishes. I would harvest and eat one every day, my daily dose of fresh pick and eat vegetable.

If you sprinkle cinnamon on the soil the fungus gnats also disappear.
Love the setup! I have a fungus gnat flying around me as you’re talking about them 🤣🙌🏼. I’ve tried a few different tomato plants for indoors (patio style) but I keep getting white leaf mold 🤨. I think I’ll try those Tiny Tim’s! Then stick to lettuce, maybe kale and herbs. It’s hard to let go of the garden this time of year but luckily in MA we have had an usually warm Fall! My Lilikoi (aka passion fruit) is going crazy right now with lots of fruit ripening. One of my favorite ways to eat it is to make Lilikoi Bars, I just use a Lemon Bar recipe and substitute the lilikoi juice…yum!

I don’t know why nobody mentions this but I tried growing chili pepper and Thai basil indoor with grow lights and they are so healthy BUT THEY DON’T TASTE LIKE ANYTHING lol 😂. The 🌶 isn’t spicy, the basil isn’t flavorful it’s just dull . Like I said the plants all look fabulously green and bushy! Which is why I was so surprised! I guess the sun has magic to awaken flavors in veggies
