Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

    Hi Mark,
How did you go growing the Rocoto chilli?
I am gobsmacked at ours here on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, as they are prolific all year round. Even through winter when the temperature drops to 2degrees Celsius.
They are a spreading plant and we hope to espalier ours when we move to the Westernport-Bass region soon

    "winter"

  3. Leia Clark on August 9, 2021 at 11:05 pm

I’ve got garlic and onion growing. I followed the instructions from your pot ash video and all of my bbq ash feeds the garlic and onions. They love it! Every time I add a batch, a few days later I can see a difference!

Hi mark do you have a list of what grows easily in winter?

  6. apolloguide on August 9, 2021 at 11:08 pm

    Thanks again…

If anyone wants a bulletproof bean to grow, try ‘Vitalis’ type. You wont regret planting them. They are stringless and high yields per plant.

I’ve sowed Radishes in the summer. I dont think they would make it. I dont know why but, my zucchinis/ summer squash arent producing any big fruits. I dont know why they wont do it. My Marigolds are doing good. My cucumbers arent producing fruits too. I dont know why that also happens with the cucumber.

I really am envious of all the tropical trees you can grow right in your backyard

  13. Kathlyn Black on August 9, 2021 at 11:19 pm

I am now learning the differences between cool weather crops and warm weather crops. I SO appreciate your videos! Your information is still very helpful here in sub-tropical east Texas, USA. In addition, your personality is very pleasant to listen to (and not bad to look at either!) Thank you for all you do!

Thank you for your videos! You make it seem so doable to be self-sufficient in something and I’m really excited to get more self-sufficient!

This is exactly what I need. We’re in Los Angeles and none of the usual directions apply to us. I’m hoping this will help. Will tomatoes grow in the winter? Yea-my tomatoes often burn to a crisp in the summer. We have only frosted once in 20 years.

  16. Shadowstar1917 on August 9, 2021 at 11:27 pm

    *starts garlic in the fridge*
    *plants them in the spring*

    Since i grow plants indoors,
    My season is neverending.
It os rewarding having a watermelon plant during winter

Where in Australia are you located?

  19. DiabloMinero on August 9, 2021 at 11:31 pm

Have you considered growing Galapagos wild tomatoes in summer? Supposedly they’re much more heat-tolerant than domestic tomatoes. They’re about cherry tomato sized.

  20. Laumeesi Latu on August 9, 2021 at 11:32 pm

Hey Mark thank you for that tip to save growing tomatoes to Winter. I’m struggling here in Sydney trying to grow tomatoes during summer.

  21. Leia Clark on August 9, 2021 at 11:32 pm

I’m making grow bags from my sewing scrap cloth and putting tomatoes and peppers in them. I can’t wait until spring!

I made Jerusalem artichokes into brined pickles this winter. They are really nice. Thanks. It also gets rid of the wind they cause when cooked.

  31. Debbie Guthrie on August 9, 2021 at 11:38 pm

Are gourds edible? Or is there another name for them?

  32. K It on August 9, 2021 at 11:39 pm

So interesting. You have fruits & veggies I’ve never seen before in the US. Have you ever done a cooking show to show us how you use the produce?

  44. Bob Hoover on August 9, 2021 at 11:50 pm

Winter in Queensland, that time of year when you might have to wear trousers instead of shorts.

  45. Darren Dwyer on August 9, 2021 at 11:52 pm

Hi Mark. I know this is not the correct place to put this question but to be honest, I am "catching up" on every bloody vid you put out as they are ar just so "amateur" in your presentation style (which is brilliant) but ever so "professional" in the underlying content. In regard to Pot Ash which was one of your vid’s, would burning cardboard be of any benefit in creating Pot Ash. I can not think of anyone better to pose this question too. Cheers cobber. My email spoke is "fam" as in your family…"pet" as in your pet ducks and the first number being one…so it is fam pet one at gmail dot com .. If you can work that out you have done bloody well. Feel free to email me if you want with your reply as a bit more personal. Cheers.

  47. A Little Garden Up North on August 9, 2021 at 11:57 pm

You and your garden is amazing. I did gardening as a creative outlet this summer due to pandemic but the more I watch your channel, the more I think about “hm, could I be self sufficient since I don’t really want to go to the grocery store anymore?” I just want to tell you how much I appreciate your vids. Thanks a lot.

  48. Vaper's Kick Butt on August 10, 2021 at 12:01 am

I love watching your videos, even though 99% is stuff I can’t personally do myself. I live in Minnesota, U.S.A., and we go from -20 (-30c) up to possibly 110 (43c)! How cold do your winters get?
