Gardening Indoors During Winter | A Backyard Eden Collaboration

In this video we take a look at our attempts at indoor gardening during winter and hydroponic gardening indoors. I give you a look at several of the things that we have growing in our small space indoor garden. We decided to step out and grow things that would push the envelope more than just growing salad greens or herbs. We have been doing indoor herb gardening for several years but wanted to try vegetable gardening indoors as well to grow something to go with our Basil.

Thanks for the inspirational video – showing that lots of nice veggies can be grown indoors. For the time being, I’m only growing Watercress indoors. The reason is that I love Watercress and it’s not available to buy , where I live right now. I will try for herbs though! Here in Northern Europe, the window sill is a joke as a place to grow anything, at least half the year. I am trying to find some stylish growing lamps! I ‘m thinking of using edible plants and vegetables on the windowsills, instead of house plants.

First-timer at gardening outside or inside. Want to keep growing over the winter: Rhubarb, Zucchini, Roma Tomatoes, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red Bell Peppers, and Strawberries. I am in Illinois so I will be using any sunlight and a grow light. As I said, this is my first time just having an outside garden, not to mention an indoor garden, wish me luck.Thank you for your video.

Yes!! I’ve been searching for anyone who has grown successfully indoors over winter months. I have limited space, but started a little late with my seedlings. As of right now I have 19 starts on my bathroom counter and I started a rose bush and it has started to grow. I’m so excited!! #LOVINIT

  24. Lj LaValle on January 17, 2022 at 6:42 pm

Thanks for the inspiring video! I’ve been doing outdoor gardening in the NYC, and Long Island NY area for many years (not an expert though), and now in a colder zone near Utica NY, and want to experiment more with indoor winter gardening. Your video has lots of inspiring areas. I imagine that you might have an edge of advantage in the winter being that you are in Texas, but maybe not that much. I want to grow some high protein sources, so beans are on my list for indoor gardening. I have an outdoor non heated porch with windows that has one side facing South. I’m going to place plastic over the windows for insulation and place a small space heater inside. It’s the middle of winter now (Feb 2021) and I want to grow lots of beans. What are your recommendations for temp control, and if you think I’ll have enough sunlight to grow anything substantial for the rest of winter/spring 2021. The porch is about 8 feet by 10 feet. Thanks for any insight!

Your passion for growing shows. This is my first video I have watched of yours. You earned a new subscriber. Question for you is it possible to grow a variety of fruits and veggies in a grow tent outdoors (or several separate grow tents)? A few reasons I would choose this, and tell me if there are better ways to do this. There is no room to grow indoors. Outdoors is mostly trees so not much if any sunlight in most spots. Also, I live in an area that is dry and cold, Reno Nevada. So if I can ventilate, climate control, humidity control and use correct grow lights. Theoretically I should be able to grow anything all year round. I know this will be an expensive setup which I’m willing to do. I also have an extra garage I could use instead of grow tents. Let me know what you think.

What grow lights do you use?

  37. Sherri Vanderpool on January 17, 2022 at 6:58 pm

What type of food nutrients are you using? All my plants have no fruit and my tomato plant is 24 “ tall with not even 1 flower… I’m growing indoors hydroponically…

  38. Whats Up on January 17, 2022 at 7:00 pm

What type of bulbs do you have for your light source?

  39. Papa Blue Shirt on January 17, 2022 at 7:04 pm

Nice setup, I started 2 years ago and have not bought a salad since. It is very rewarding. I am growing a large variety of salads. Also turnips, beets and my favorite indoor veggie Purple kohlrabi. The best thing about indoor gardening? I would say there are two. No bug pressure and when it is 100 outside, I can chillout in my air conditioned grow room.😀
