Garden Seeds- Cheap vs Expensive Follow Up | EpicReviewGuys CC

Follow Up on my seed comparison test. A month ago I planted cheap (25 cents/pack) seeds next to expensive ($2 ~ $3/pack) seeds to see what you get for your money. Here is what I can see so far.

I buy dollar store seeds. Have always had great success with them. Some of them may have less seeds. Buy four packs, and their still less than half the price. The only thing with dollar store seeds is they don’t have a good selection.

Something I have noticed is that seeds in foil packages have the best germination rates, paper the next, and clear packaged seeds I no longer buy. They suck. From heirloom tomatoes to patty pan squash…they’re just a waste of money. Less than 20% germination and even lower survival rate from seedling.

I recently purchased some marigold, gypsophila, and alyssum Seeds. They all bloomed beautifully

You should really change the name of your channel or at least just remove the "s" in guys; Nice profile picture though.

Your confetti situation reminds of visiting Venice during Carnevale. Hair, clothes, hotel room… everywhere. There’s still some kicking around in my luggage several years later.

I’ve purchased both burpee and American seeds in the past too. It seems for my growing conditions in Central Florida area the American seeds performed better for me. But I’m looking forward to seeing your comparison results. Will pest resistance be a factor of the comparison test? Good luck!

Why didn’t you do another follow up video after this?

Parris, may I ask what led to your decision to join a network? I don’t know all of the ins and outs, but it seems like not a great idea?

I’m so glad you are doing this comparison! Very excited about the Dollar Tree seeds! I can’t wait to see what they produce. Happy Easter!

Good Test. I learned it’s not the type of seed, but how you care for them that matters. I have grow lights, and a small greenhouse. I have found no exceptions to this rule.

you new channel picture looks so nice πŸ˜€

  28. megan larive on June 20, 2022 at 9:52 pm

…. so beyond everything else I don’t think youll get good results from either cantaloupe, you’ve planted them FAR too close in a container. you might have gotten better late season fruit/healthier plants with 2 plants in one container or in the soil…. once the vines start expanding I don’t see how you could keep them fertilized much less watered…

  29. Lindzey Wright on June 20, 2022 at 9:54 pm

I planted the $1 flower seeds and all of them are growing well. πŸ™‚

  30. Positively SIMful on June 20, 2022 at 9:55 pm

This is a great test and it jives with my own experience. I used to buy the dollar store seeds but noticed there was usually less seeds in it, and there was more germination failure. And it wasn’t even sporadic, it was like some packages did just fine and others just failed to germinate altogether as if the seeds just came from a bad batch. I still buy for things like annual flowers or carrots and such but since I’ve always had limited space in my garden I don’t wanna risk seeds that don’t germinate so for things like tomatoes and cucumbers I just buy the better seeds. But for plants you don’t care as much and if you want to experiment and have fun with it, they’re good.

  31. Robert Baldwin on June 20, 2022 at 9:56 pm

    Happy Easter. Happy gardening.

If you want to do a true comparison, you need to use the same varieties of seeds from each company.

  38. Meredith R on June 20, 2022 at 10:08 pm

Would have liked to see the actual germination rate.

  39. Lisa Wade on June 20, 2022 at 10:08 pm

  43. Trevor Johnson on June 20, 2022 at 10:13 pm

Hi there. I have been growing some old seeds that more than 7 and 10 years past the sell by date. I have got some seeds from the seventies and grow very well parsley, sunflowers, French beans, runner beans the next bit is important. The secret of all seeds is soak them for 24 hours before if they have a hard case if wild don’t bother and if soft seeds then 4 to 6 hours. If you want lemon, lime and orange pips take the outer covering off the seeds or pips just like inside of a sunflower seed. Soak for 4 to 6 hours, best to do this in the morning and then you can plant outside in pots or straight into the ground cover with "plastic bag clear" not in direct sunlight and put in cold frame mainly because of frost, it’s not the middle of may yet. Goofus a small God. Allegedly. For the past 3 hours, I have been doing some seeds of my own. I forgot to press the send button and came back to find this message still not sent. Good gardening. SEND. I live in Britain.

Great video. I’m working on making a video comparing brand name seeds to dollar store seeds, and you basically sum it up perfectly here – when you are a beginning gardener, there is no reason to not start with the affordable seeds. The main difference will come down to hybrid vs heirloom varieties, and common vs specialty varieties. You also might be better germination rates with the brand name seeds (like what your carrots looked like to me), but when you are trying to learn how to properly space and plant seeds, lower rates might even help you. Good luck with your garden this year, I’m sending anti squirrel thoughts your way πŸ™‚

  49. HorseblindersOn on June 20, 2022 at 10:20 pm
