    Zone 5 is CANADA?

  4. Patricia McCrea on November 4, 2021 at 11:29 am

Thank you, but do the ones in the garden make it through the winter? We are in the same zone as you, so you know how very cold it can be, and I have read that you have to keep them above 50 degrees (or something like that I think). Do they stay warm enough under the compost?

Thank you! I live in zone 10A and it seems as though i should not have to worry about frost dates, but i started seedling in Nov and it’s still not doing well. at least i’ll be prepared for next winter =)

  11. Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby on November 4, 2021 at 11:41 am

How does this doc work with no frost date? I’m in FL zone 10 and I am confused as to when I should start or stop most crops other than I will general do cold weather crops in fall and winter and warm weather in spring and summer. But some guide dont have me planting spinach, kale, and onions till Jan – Feb but from what I see for most everyone else they are planting now. Is it because I will have a much better grow session/conditions than other areas it will take less days to mature? I’m wanting to trying to do what you are doing with a continuous harvest. I am wondering if I were to plant my plants close together if they would provide enough of a shelter for each other to keep getting yields from them. Thanks for you help 🙂

  12. dm l on November 4, 2021 at 11:42 am

I planted fall crops of spinach, lettuce, beets and chard in a frame covered with screens. The earwigs are dining on the spinach.
I assume that when they finish the spinach they’ll head for the beets and chard. You’ve never mention an earwig problem with your seedlings. Are you lucky enough not to have the hungry critters despite all that wonderful mulch?

Hi! great video! thank you for sharing! I live in Chile, so your winter is my summer. I looked for this calculator for spring planting, but didn’t find it. Did you make one? Right now my tomatos are starting to put out little tomatos, so I think I’m too late to plant a lot things, but maybe I’m in time to plant some year round crops?
A calculator for spring planting would really help 🙂
Thank you for sharing! I’ve been watching your videos and learning a ton!

  15. john mizak on November 4, 2021 at 11:48 am

I planted dinosaur kale in the spring(zone 6b), this was the first time I ever planted it, I am getting a good harvest right now. I was wondering if those same plants will continue to yield into fall and early winter, or should I start some new plants now to take their place? Thanks!

  19. Patricia McCrea on November 4, 2021 at 11:51 am

    Oh thank you!!
That is encouraging…..is it possible to simply put them into the compost bins or garden beds INSTEAD of doing the whole worm bin thing?

How are you not being eaten alive by mosquitoes!? I need to do my fall planting but the mosquitoes are so thick I can’t do anything! It’s about all I can do to run out and harvest a few things and then run back in! They’ve never been this bad! I think I’m only a few hours west of you.

  29. Sheri Fischer on November 4, 2021 at 12:02 pm

You and Eliot Coleman have inspired me to grow all year around and it works in zone 6. January and February are still my difficult months but the concept of layering frost covers has helped.

Hello Patrick I’m so impressed with your garden!
Mine doesn’t even look close to yours!
I need guidance on how to prepare bed after season change? Do you grow all seedlings in a flat or container? How do you start fall garden ., direct seeding it flat? I’m struggling 🙁

  39. Lee Tullberg on November 4, 2021 at 12:15 pm

Patrick, How does using transplants effect the dates? If for instance I am in the same zone as you, could I start lettuce indoors in September and transplant the first week of November?

  40. Patricia McCrea on November 4, 2021 at 12:15 pm

    Hello!
I am interested in your composting worms.
Are you raising them in bins still, or just in your garden beds now that your garden is in this wonderful state of good health?
Would you be willing to do a video on raising worms?
(Or have you done one and I have just missed seeing it?)
Thank you for considering these questions!

  41. Patricia McCrea on November 4, 2021 at 12:18 pm

Thank you for all of the good information. I will watch this video! And thank you for so freely sharing all of your knowledge and experience! Fall and winter, my favorite time of the year to garden:-)   I am starting to get impatient so, I start pulling most of the plants that are not producing much anymore:-) The summer heat is still on the nineties,  but I got the greenhouse cleaned up and started sowing some seeds.  Love to see your garden still thriving.  TFS.

I need to get a greenhouse for hail protection, does more damage then frost here in zone 10a. they are never big hail in southern California but get at least one most years.
