Everything You Need to Know About Starting Fall Seeds for Zone 9 & 10

July and August are some of the warmest months here in San Diego, and September often continues with hot days. If you’re itching to start your fall crops, here’s what you need to know to do it right.

Tip 1: START SEEDS IN THE SHADE
It’s too hot in our greenhouse and even too warm in sunny areas. Using a shade tree or even shade cloth can keep seeds ten degrees cooler and protect the seeds & soil from getting too hot.

Tip 2: USE THE RIGHT SOIL MIX
Soil moisture is so important! Seeds need moisture, but soil that holds onto water too much can lead to harmful fungal growth. Use soil that allows air to get in and water to move through your pots.

Tip 3: BOTTOM WATER YOUR STARTS
With a simple tray, you can allow your soil to water itself! Dry soil will pull water up as needed and naturally. This allows you to water less often and also avoid issues with over-saturation.

Tip 4: INCREASE THE AIRFLOW
Airflow is key to preventing mold and fungal growth which are harmful to seedlings. It’s also useful for building strong seedlings. Growing in an area with limited airflow? Try something as simple as a box fan!

Thank so much for these videos! I live in Zone 10B Cerritos, California. Most of my south-facing backyard gets direct son. It’s very hot back there most of the year. I want to plant a vegetable garden back there but I’m not sure if I should plant in the direct scorching sun or in the corners of the yard that gets mostly shade. What would you suggest?

I live in zone 10 and have recently bought the decomposable seed starter trays, could you still recommend watering from the bottom of the trays?

Awesome tips for a newbie, bought some heirloom seeds from rareseeds .com and couldn’t start a darn thing. Too much water, drowned the poor little guys, the soil also was lacked what it needed to thrive and get seeds to push through soil. I live in the mojave desert, victorville area 9b zone and it’s so dry and hot ,a newbie like me needs some serious handholding. I didn’t germinate the seeds , I just dropped them into the hard soil and watered and nothing!!! So I need to watch for videos to help me get through this hump.
