DIY Mini Solar Powered Garden Fountain One Year Update

One year ago I installed my mini solar powered fountain / birdbath in my garden. We’re going to check in on it to see what changes I’ve made, what animals have been utilizing it as well as some maintenance and upkeep tips that I’ve used to keep it going all this time.

Check out my original Solar Fountain how to video here:

here is a link to the water pump i recommend if you would like to buy your own:

This one uses a filler bottle, like a chicken watering station.
Something similar could work for yours.

I pay a bit more for a fountain which will switch off when the water is too low.

My advice, put in a wildlife pond. You have loads of room and it will give you x1000 the pleasure. Take a look at Wild Your Garden youtube channel.

nice video, does the pump have auto turn off in case of low water? or would low water not hurt the pump?

I had no idea how much fun watching the birds and other wildlife would be ….now I have 4 different types …all with a bubbler such as yours. I have them where I can see them from my window… great entertainment !

The St. Augustine grass, live oak trees, and the rain bushes by your fountain all looked like a very familiar place to me! Looks like a nice neighborhood! Your fountain idea is wonderful, and I plan to make one for my backyard. Thank you!

Awesome video. I’m going to make one of these. What part of the country do you live in? I’m curious because I’m concerned about the fountain freezing in the winter. It gets pretty cold here in Missouri sometimes.

  23. cath carpio on August 1, 2022 at 11:23 pm

Wow Jeff, you sure have a variety of visitors. Thanks for the update.

Thank you for this update – I wondered how this would work out in the long run when I saw the video where you installed this – so functional and practical! Thanks for mentioning the difference river stones made compared to gravel. I especially enjoyed seeing your visitors. I plan to do something like this where I live in the Southwestern New Mexico desert.

What did you use to hold the water ? What do you suggest of things to use for a fountain . Thank you for any help . Also can I use colored stone from the dollar store inside the counter gain ? I’d like to set up one like yours for the critters

The first video and this one are very clear, precise, easy to follow & very helpful! I’m on a terrace in the hot San Fernando Valley & have been noticing more dead birds than usual so I ended up here while researching for DIY solar powered bird bath/fountain solutions. Thanks!

  40. Scott Velasquez on August 1, 2022 at 11:51 pm

Have you thought of maybe digging a big hole and placing a bucket or container in the hole to hold a bigger reservoir of water? Or a large pot above ground with the saucer on top?
