I have lived in an apartment and grown things on a balcony for more than two decades and I am sure of one thing, that "inside draining system" of yours will NOT work, simply because it isn’t a draining system, it does not drain away moisture, it just gives you a bit of moisture storage underneath the roots. All it takes, is one real downpur and your whole mason jar can be filled to the top with water. It is NO fun having to turn pots upside down while you try to drain the water only, at least not too much of your soil. I would strongly recommend that people stay away from using mason jars, it will so easily end out causing a lot of frustration and regrets… πŸ˜‰Β
No, I know mason jars are in these days, they give the right retro, recycled look and all, but try to find and recycle some terracotta pots instead, those have proper draining holes. Or, buy some reasonable zinc pots/buckets, use a nail or an awl and a hammer to make drainage holes in the bottom and put those in those pretty boxes you made, it will look and work GREAT! I LOVE your boxes, would love a few myself! Looks so much better than most commercial ones! I think I’d go with zinc buckets/pots in the boxes myself, as it is light, cheap, gets a great matte patina after a little while and it tolerates frost, which is real important many places, including where I live where we have a long winter which can get real cold… πŸ™‚ Have lots of fun with your herb garden, people! πŸ™‚

that is such a great idea, thank you!

  11. Lance Lovecraft on November 15, 2021 at 1:09 pm

Mason jars look cool and all but how does it actually drain? the water will still be collected at the bottom. After a few waterings wouldn’t the water level rise into the soil?

Loved your video, plant Oregano next. God Bless you.

How do you fertilize your mason jar herbs?

  17. Fonda Sharkey-Wyatt on November 15, 2021 at 1:17 pm

I’ve started collecting different kinds of mints: sweet mint, spearmint, apple mint, peppermint, just for something different to try.

  18. Elliott Aaronn on November 15, 2021 at 1:17 pm

Favorite herbs? Let’s see–there’s wolfsbane, deadly nightshade and of course, mandrake! Just kidding.
I like basil (lots of this for pesto) rue, dittany of Crete, white sage, rosemary and golden thyme. Thanks for sharing.

  23. HatedHero on November 15, 2021 at 1:20 pm

Rue and Thai Basil are amazing. I highly recommend them.

  24. boop bedoop on November 15, 2021 at 1:21 pm

    how do they drain

  25. Simply Vince on November 15, 2021 at 1:21 pm

My concens here would be root rot/mold with that "drainage system" but also I eould be concerned about them getting root bound since those are pretty tight containers for plants of that size.

  26. Elaine Sian on November 15, 2021 at 1:21 pm

You are awesome… I’ll start mine. I’ll keep you posted.

I picked up chocolate mint from Walmart 2 or 3 days ago. smells like a York candy bar. yummy

  29. Sylvia McTigue on November 15, 2021 at 1:25 pm

cute project. but you really need to add draining holes not to end up with mildew. herbs need to drain. easily done with glass drill bits from amazon; just attach to drill and attack that mason jar base!

  30. Tina Knutsen on November 15, 2021 at 1:27 pm

Great video and really cute! Bonus to receive the benefits of these great herbs not only for culinary, but also for medicinal uses. Also Sage and some other herbs are great for making smudge sticks, decorations and they smell wonderful! When you prune them back you can chop them up and fill ice cube trays and add a little water, once frozen put in ziplock bag and label it.

I found that the best time of day to water in a dry climate is in the evening. In a humid climate like I live in now, morning is best.
