Continuous Harvest of Fresh Garden Produce! (Zone 5)

Continuous Harvest of Fresh Garden Produce! (Zone 5)

We strive for a continuous harvest of fresh produce throughout the year. This is made possible through a combination of season extension and succession planting. Today I share 3 specific examples of succession planting in our garden.

I really like your videos and approach to gardening. I could use your advice on how to make the most out of my garden. Living in a west facing apartment, I have boxes on my balcony and pots inside under grow lights. Any advice you have would be helpful. Zone 4

I am having hard time growing Carrots. Tried three different varieties, they grow but the actual carrots are always tiny, the top is very big and green. I live in Melbourne, Australia so I should be able to grow them all year around. I also have use hoop house in our winter months. Any suggetstions? Thanks

Is it cool enough there to grow potatoes in summer? I’ve just started growing potatoes, but I’ve heard they aren’t supposed to do well in the heat. Thanks.

As always a really encouraging video, thank you for taking the time to educate and inform us. Could you go around your yard and give a list of what you grow?
I am envious that your garden is several weeks ahead of ours here in the UK where our last frost date is 15th May.

I have heard the term succession planting many times, but only now did it finally click!! You are an excellent teacher when it comes to gardening. Thank you for the great video!

I planted carrot seeds in Spring and got maybe hints of one or two plant sprouts. Not a row, just one or two specks of green. This kind of failure tends to shut me down for the whole year.

Another great video. Question on seed sowing (particularly carrots and beets): do you sow them and then cover immediately with your leaf mulch, or do you wait for them to germinate and sprout up and then cover them? Also meant to ask this on another video but will go ahead and ask here: when you add your compost/vermicompost, do you put it directly on top of your mulch and then cover with more mulch, or do you move the mulch that is in place, put the compost down and then recover?

I’m probably overthinking all of this….

I had a busy day and just now got the chance to watch. All your videos are nice to watch. It’s obvious you work hard to make them so. Oscar’s a mad cat wit some climbing to do! My potatoes are beginning to bloom! I too planted Red Norlands in 1 bed. I planted a russet in the other.. I planted them mid Feb so i can probably harvest in June, but im going to wait a few weeks after the plants die back to let the grow a bit. Not sure what i will do with that space yet. My greens bed is beginning to bolt and Im glad. I want to let it all go to seed and maintain it throughout the summer hoping to have it come back in fall. Ive never done this before so is there anything you would suggest i do for it other than water? I planted all my babies yesterday, tomatoes, beans, eggplant and squashes. Still need to get a pack of yard long seeds and some cantaloupe seeds. Ive put so much effort into expanding my garden this winter that im finally at a place where i can just plant and enjoy!
Thanks again for your hard work!

Thank you for this video. I’m going to attempt to make low tunnels for the coming winter season. Is it easy to bend pvc? Feels so rigid.

Hi! I followed your example last year, and planted French Sorrel, which fared marvelously here in zone 7, through the winter, without any cover. However, I’m amused to see that it bolted almost immediately in spring, as soon as temps got into the 70’s during the day. I’d love to watch a video from you about French Sorrel- how you care for it? (Do I clip it back, to try to stave off bolting? Or should I try to save seeds?) -and how do you use it in cooking? (I love it raw, right in the garden, but I’d also love to learn to cook with it.) I feel like it’s an underappreciated green that you have introduced me to, and now I want to nurture it πŸ™‚

Always an Amazing Garden! Love your channel! I lived in Bucktown area of Chicago most of my life but moved to the country for a chance at growing my own Organic food. I didn’t have anywhere to grow inground cause my house was surrounded by decks. Love your recipes too! Thanks for being such an inspiration!

Another well done and informative video Patrick. I just have a question about how you encourage sprouting of your potatoes. I can’t quite hear or maybe don’t understand the term you use @ 3:57 on the video where you say "after ??? them for a while to encourage sprouting". Many thanks and all the best for your garden this year.

  35. Gymgirl lja on October 26, 2021 at 10:52 am

    Patrick,
This video series is spot on!!! Out of everything I do, getting a handle on the planting schedule has been the hardest part of gardening for me. I truly want to have something growing at all times, but, it gets a bit confusing when you factor in crop rotation, plant families, sun patterns, etc.

This video series is gonna be VERY helpful! Thank you, so much!

P.S. What medium did you plant the potatoes in, in the Geobins?

P.S.S. My Geobins are FINALLY maintaining a steady 140Β° temp this spring, after I paid more attention to your addition of the chop and drop and nitrogenous material. I upped the amount of coffee grounds I was adding, and began "feeding" the bins with veggie peels I collect in abundance from my local food store. The produce guy goes through the aisles EVERY day pulling the old/expired vegetation from the shelves. This gets held in storage (5 gallon buckets), to add to my Geobins, as needed. Feeding the Geobins has made a tremendous difference, and, whereas I collected exactly TWO worms from my Geobins last year, I can’t NOT run into them today!!

    Hugs!

  37. Christina Punch on October 26, 2021 at 10:55 am

hi. great video. as always! i’m trying to get better about succession planting this year so as to avoid the gluts/voids of produce coming from the garden at times. so thank you! i did have a random question… you mentioned your garden has limited sunlight. yet, i noticed several types of fruiting bushes and trees. in your experience, are they still able to produce enough to make the effort worthwhile? and when you say "limited sun", what does that mean? how much sun do they receive approx.? i’m considering adding some of these to my garden as well but am not sure if i should bother given that all the descriptions say "full sun" and the open space i have left in the yard offers less then that. so- i’m curious- what would you say def. needs the most sun to produce vs the least when it comes to the fruiting bushes and trees that you have tried? (i’m in zone 6 if that matters.)
    thanks in advance!
    christina

  38. Kevin Byrne on October 26, 2021 at 10:55 am

I’m so jealous of your lush garden. Here, the critters seem to regard my plantings as a free vegetarian buffet. I caught a gopher just a couple of days ago. Between the gophers, rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks, gardening isn’t practical here. I’m lucky if I can grow a few flowers.
P.S. I always smile at Oscar, the cat who thinks that he’s a dog.

  39. FOR8YESHUA on October 26, 2021 at 10:56 am

Your videos are always genuinely transparent and enjoyable!!
What do you feed your cat? Is he a meow vegetarian?

  40. Sabrina Dykes on October 26, 2021 at 10:56 am

We are in Newport News Va is it too late to start some crops at the end of May? If not which ones would you suggest a beginner gardener? And when do you crop rotate them?

  42. Rich Kate on October 26, 2021 at 11:00 am

I wonder if the folks in a similar area/weather would appreciate knowing in advance which veggies u will be starting, so they can have them on hand and then plant them also when u do. Kinda like Jake Mace’s seed bank box sending out a certain seed to plant a certain month, like a fool proof gardening plan. πŸ˜€ -katrina

Your videos are very informative and inspiring. You’ve taught me a lot and helped reawakened my love for gardening. Thank you! I am wondering how much space a person would need to grow most of their food. Can you tell me how many square feet your garden is and about what percentage of your food you grow?

  48. Little Cougar on October 26, 2021 at 11:08 am

Patrick, I have a question regarding tomatoes and peppers. When do you plant them outside? What temp should the nights be at and for a 7 day forecast?
