Come Tour Our Indoor Survival Garden – January 2021

Snow covers the outside landscape and yet we have a productive little paradise right inside our home. Our indoor survival garden is designed to provide us with a variety of fresh greens, fruits, and vegetables year-round.

In this video, we show you how we have transformed a small room into a productive garden to supplement our stored foods. We review some of the lighting options that we are experimenting with and show you the great progress that we have made in less than a year.

Hi, is awesome your indoor survival garden, how can I mix with Tiny Homes and minimalist lifestyle? I would like to be your volunteer in any you need (videos, landscaping, etc) thank you

  2. mylittlebluecottage on August 11, 2021 at 11:27 pm

Great job! I have been successful regrowning the bottoms of the green onions I get from the store. I have them in bottles with water and they are by the back door window just little thing but its a start

I had 100s of gnats when I started couple plants indoors I moved everything to garage and see so many gnats there but as they are not inside home its ok now. But I was extremely disappointed as I get lot of sunlight as it is south-facing room and couldn’t use it.

My husband says I have him living in the rain forest. Lol I grow anything I want in the house and don’t hav grow lights. Just regular house lights and sunny windows.

Hello, I have a setup similar to yours and had the same issue with mildew and moisture. I started having the fan run on low circulating all the time and would open the door to the outside air for about 5 to 10 minutes per day while I was in there doing my daily stuff and that really helped control the air problems to get the mildew under control. Maybe this would help you also, best of luck and I really enjoy all the help you provide. Thanks so very much for sharing all your knowledge with us.

I love your space and how much you’ve packed into it! I bet it’s wonderful to stop into that greenhouse space and take a deep breath. I’d live in a rainforest house if I could, with all my indoor gardening and houseplants 😅

I used to grow herbs and vegetables in my kitchen windows but haven’t dedicated the time to it since my 4th baby was born. I do have a Tower Garden from JuicePlus! It takes up 2’x2’ in my kitchen and has grow lights. I need to get that going because we need more fresh vegetables and to be self reliant.

My favorite to grow inside are alfalfa sprouts (sandwiches), green onions and cooking herbs. I’d love to try bokchoy !

  7. Momma Gator on August 11, 2021 at 11:34 pm

What zone are you in? What is the lowest temp you experience? what the actual cost is for all the lighting? You said that there is no heat in the room but at the end you show you have a wood burning stove, do you have that going all the time for your heat out there? I have a greenhouse attached to my house but it gets really cold at night so trying to judge how I could modify what I have to make it work all year round. I am in a very cold zone 5.

  8. The Beans on August 11, 2021 at 11:34 pm

Very nice set up! My favorite indoor winter (and year round) crop is sprouts … all garden starts go out in tiny greenhouse to keep humidity out of house (Florida is mold paradise)!

  9. LDS Nurse on August 11, 2021 at 11:35 pm

I’ve enjoyed your videos a lot. And I love that you live near me. It gives me a better idea what will grow in the area. I’m new to gardening. Thanks for the videos.

  10. Nene Maming on August 11, 2021 at 11:35 pm

I loved your creation. I do grow potatoes inside with just the window lights along with tomato and pepper even pumpkin. We just keep trying👍😄❤

  11. J Fields on August 11, 2021 at 11:36 pm

Im so envious of your set up. I’m in an apartment with an indoor greenhouse with very limited space but it’s still so satisfying to grow inside my home! So far cherry tomatoes chilli peppers and potatoes.

  12. Louise Floret on August 11, 2021 at 11:37 pm

    Love this.

  13. ladycobra3 on August 11, 2021 at 11:38 pm

First of all let me say that I have learned a lot from your channel and thank you very much for giving of your time to educate. That being said I know some people are very overwhelmed with what should be at the top of the piority list if they are just getting started. I have been doing food storage for awhile now but I am still overwhelmed by all the things I think I still need to take care of and store. If possible could you do a video on what should be your top priority and work down the list. If there was a loss of electrity everything would be affected including water and gas lines. A priority of things to have ready just in case of grid down would be great.

  14. ME Curry on August 11, 2021 at 11:41 pm

What is the temperature range in your growing room? We live in a much colder climate, but our garage is heated and has windows, skylights, exhaust fan, and we’re wondering if that is an option.

  15. Amandalyn VanNote on August 11, 2021 at 11:41 pm

A dehumidifier would work well and the water could be used back into the plants

  16. Dirt Road on August 11, 2021 at 11:41 pm

That is so cool and your view is spectacular! I have an Aerogarden for lettuce an spinach in my preps pantry room. I suggest you add oscillating fans to reduce mold and harden the plants.

  17. Steve B on August 11, 2021 at 11:45 pm

Have you considered hydroponics? less bugs as there is no dirt for them to breed in. I’m guessing there might even be humidity in the room as potting soil wouldn’t be providing evaporation surface area… the stem of the plant is more enclosed by the piping… and you could pack plants in tighter (which would increase humidity again for transpiration, but it would be "productive humidity" vs. just the potting soil drying out).

  18. equanimousawareness on August 11, 2021 at 11:45 pm

Run a dehumidifier and use the reclaimed humidity to reduce mold and water the next time.

  19. Verna Helvik on August 11, 2021 at 11:46 pm

You need an exhaust fan like in the bathroom, you have a fan over the door, can’t you use it

  20. Donna Rodriguez on August 11, 2021 at 11:46 pm

Basil – Italian large leaf, cherry tomatoes, peppers, peppers and more peppers….

  21. Velocity AKA sloth mom on August 11, 2021 at 11:47 pm

Oak leaf lettuce. We grow it usually starting in February and will have it till May when we put the big garden..

  22. Saga Wang on August 11, 2021 at 11:51 pm

    Great job!!

  23. Saga Wang on August 11, 2021 at 11:52 pm

There’s a guy on mountain video that moves his summer garden plants into pots & put in his greenhouse & it’s very productive so think about that too😎

  24. Buddhist Bushcrafter on August 11, 2021 at 11:53 pm

I was shocked that green bell peppers did so well inside the kitchen.

  25. Laurie Mann on August 11, 2021 at 11:53 pm

Curious about how you have your timers set up with all the cables. I can see power strip bars, but not the timers. Would love some info on what works well as I have timers with two outlets and was hoping to maybe use power strips with it.

  26. Pond and garden sanctuary on August 11, 2021 at 11:54 pm

    Looks great.

  27. Nicole Sobol on August 11, 2021 at 11:54 pm

How are you pollinating? Isn’t that a mayor factor?

  28. Jessica Smash on August 11, 2021 at 11:56 pm

How are they pollinating? I tried this one year but had no fruit, which I later figured was because there were no pollinators. But I’m a Nubie

  29. Rosalinda Illingworth on August 11, 2021 at 11:57 pm

Did you have a problem with Nats? I sure do can’t get them out. What are you doing for the control?

  30. Mare S on August 11, 2021 at 11:58 pm

I recently bought 2 grow lights and am almost ready to begin "the trials". I don’t have a room to dedicate to gardening and am starting with a folding table. Presently I am looking at the companion guides and working out a trellis option.

  31. Austin Kummer on August 11, 2021 at 11:58 pm

Y’all truly have the best content thank you! Trying to get some apple seeds to germinate indoors

  32. Edie Wall on August 11, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Good to know. I avoid all that you listed, wheat , rice, beans and flour as well as dairy and meat.

  33. hildeberto carreiro on August 12, 2021 at 12:01 am

Use mirrors and cut electricity cost

  34. Patricia Tow on August 12, 2021 at 12:02 am

I own 2 aero gardens that I grow salad greens in, in the basement under grow lights I grow chard, tomatoes, bok choy, so my favorite would be salad greens that are fresher then what you can get at a store at this time of year.

  35. SugarCreek Homestead of Tennessee on August 12, 2021 at 12:03 am

It’s awesome but fyi that’s not a small room. Lol

  36. K It on August 12, 2021 at 12:05 am

Sounds like the room might benefit from a dehumidifier. With mold in the air, I’d be concerned my new seed packets might absorb moisture from the air. It’s great to see peppers can produce indoors! I thought they needed warm weather! Have you tried potatoes indoors?

  37. Douglas D on August 12, 2021 at 12:07 am

    ( )

  38. theuglykwan on August 12, 2021 at 12:08 am

    Invest in a dehumidifier.

  39. Kathie Strehlow on August 12, 2021 at 12:10 am

Thank you so much! We started a lettuce garden when we saw your first post on growing indoors. It has been great! Fresh salad anytime. Now we are ready to expand. Can’t thank you enough for sharing all the great information in all your you tubes.

  40. Mary Gallagher on August 12, 2021 at 12:11 am

The survival garden looks great! I’ve only grown a few culinary herbs indoors so far.

  41. Bear River Mama on August 12, 2021 at 12:14 am

Wow! Awesome! I love this! You get to grow all winter 👏🏻 What kind of impact does this have on your electric bill? We have crazy expensive electric here so it’s something I have to think about. Also have you considered running a dehumidifier in your grow space? I’ve been wanting to plant but just haven’t got things up and running… I have been growing fodder for the chickens 🐔 which they love! I just got my shelves out to start some of my seedlings for my outdoor garden. I got me some of that Malabar spinach 😜 thank you for the tip!

  42. hayley middleton on August 12, 2021 at 12:16 am

Fantastic survival garden, it really does look ace. How do you go about pollination? My first grow lights are arriving tomorrow, my aim is to be self sufficient in veg and really stretch the seasons this year (I’m in 🇬🇧). As a mountain biker I’m envious of your beautiful view.

  43. The Attempted Homemaker on August 12, 2021 at 12:18 am

Thanks for this video! I’ve now made a list of seeds to pick up next time I’m at the store. 😁

  44. Grace Young on August 12, 2021 at 12:20 am

love your room, too. My favourite veggie is mini tomatos and chili. They grow very well.

  45. Krissy Kinsey / Nellie's Farm on August 12, 2021 at 12:23 am

Want real nutrition ? Those plants aren’t enough…go outside and forage STINGING NETTLE LEAVES…dry them out , save them for nutrition in the winter. You can make a tea out of it to prevent scurvy and other illnesses from inadequate nutrition. Plus it’s FREE. just be sure not to pick them in an area possibly sprayed with herbicides or pesticides

  46. ChillinDave 1 on August 12, 2021 at 12:23 am

Great set up! May I give a few ideas? 1) strips of mylar (get the best quality/ thicker mil) like 8" x 48" hung from the lights on the shelves will focus all the light downwards
    2) Neem oil mixed w/2 drops of dish soap in a sprayer of water applied to plants stops critters and mold
    3) if air is circulated between the living area and the plant room will lower moisture plus swap the CO2 from inside to the plants
    4) I know this hurts but ditch the fluorescents with T-5’s.. way more output
With all this effort, why not double the output? Get that moisture out!!!
    I emphasize again, excellent job!

  47. Janice on August 12, 2021 at 12:24 am

I have one of your shelves with lettuces and broccoli and kale all over it and we eat this stuff daily. But it was your early video that made me go ahead and do it. There is something very satisfying to eat your own greens.

  48. The Third Impact on August 12, 2021 at 12:25 am

How about the costs to set up a room like that?

  49. Kristin B on August 12, 2021 at 12:25 am

I have aloe plants. I plan to do seed starts this year to get a jump on my outdoor garden. This was great and I’m glad you plan to do more videos on mulch and pests. I’d like to know about planting mediums and whether you use a special seed starting soil. Did you just sprinkle the diatomaceous earth on the leaves of the plants and did it work? I keep some moisture absorbing pellets in my closets. Have you tried those or maybe a small dehumidifier? Love the work-bench setup! Do you water every day? Do you use fertilizer and if so, what brand do you find works well? At what point do you start fertilizing new seedlings? So many questions!
