Hi guys this is Mark from anypond.com your trusted resource in the UK for ponds and water features…and today we’re doing a pond clearance.

As you can see there are a lots of reedmace in this natural pond.

They’re not bulrushes. But most people call them bulrushes in the UK, so that’s okay, as common names are very local.

So we’re doing a pond clearance.

I’m removing a lot of these bulrushes. Give me a couple of minutes and we’ll get crack in.

So I’m just gonna give you a progress report. What we’re doing is we’re basically removing a lot of these reeds. And what they’re doing is they’re basically growing all along the clay…and what we’re having to do is we’ve to lift them up by their rhizomes.

Have a look at these now. You can see how they grow. They basically grow along the clay…and they send out feeder roots and the small roots are just for anchorage…and the big rhizomes they contain a real good starch. Before potatoes people used to eat the insides of these…virtually every single part of this reed is edible at some point.

And there we go. Look at this. All the reedmace is gone. Our Client is so happy with the speed we were going so they actually commissioned all of them to go in the end. He originally wanted only two thirds of them remove but in the end we actually manually removed the lot for him.
