Best Seed Storage System I've EVER Used!

Best Seed Storage System I've EVER Used!

My seed collection keeps growing at an EPIC pace, so I’ve had to evolve my seed storage ideas. I used to use a jewelry box, but there were a ton of problems with it, so I’ve swapped over to these photo storage boxes that I found on Amazon:

Great video. I was about to buy the storage containers that you started off with and I thought I’d check and see what other people were using. I like this idea.

I was storing my seeds in an old plastic grocery bag and I have misplaced it. I can’t find it to save my life lol. I decided to find a new way of seed storage this year. I really like this idea.

  8. nysigal on February 20, 2022 at 11:03 pm

These containers are good for so many things! I bought some for my seeds. I also sell costume jewelry and sort them in these as well.

  9. Martín on February 20, 2022 at 11:05 pm

My father always used a huge metal tin (the macadamia nut ones from hawaii) and he would organize them inside of it with plastic bags by groups with the envelopes inside! very similar method but not quite as clean. Only way to upgrade you method that I would recommend is refrigeration

Michaels has these on sale right now! I bought 3! Hope it’s enough for all my seeds!😬😜

I have two of the photo boxes full of seeds…and ordered more this week. Since I needed more storage, Michael’s had them on sale in their Black Friday sale, so I bought two more yesterday. (I did some seed-saving this year, so I truly needed more storage.) Worse comes to worse, I will gift one to my daughter.

Thanks for this tip! I love it! Just went to buy mine at Michael’s yesterday (7/12/21) and they are on sale for $19.99, which is over half off!

If you live in the north, most of the time you only get one shot at getting
it right. It’s not a bad idea to test any suspect seeds in late January, early
February to check viability. Whilst there’s still time to order new.
    Very cool storage idea. TYFS

How many seed packets can be held in those plastic cases?

  24. Theresa Koch on February 20, 2022 at 11:24 pm

I use these photo bins also & I love them. I have 2 clear (warm & cool season) and 1 colorful one for flowers. Mine are all labeled like that too.

  26. Ricker’s Homestead A Hobby Farm on February 20, 2022 at 11:26 pm

I was in Hobby Lobby looking for some of these today. A lady standing behind me in line had one and we got to talking. It turns out she watches your channel to. I just thought that was was cool. It’s a small world.

  27. S K on February 20, 2022 at 11:29 pm

Please link the raised bed stand/shelves with grow light in this video. It’s contemporary and looks organized.

  28. Michele Fisher on February 20, 2022 at 11:29 pm

I prefer to not use plastic especially if I’m growing my own food. I found a tin seen container. I’ll buy the seed envelopes that are resealable with a string.

  29. Maria Campbell on February 20, 2022 at 11:30 pm

I thought this was really great except the photo boxes are $80 for two of them. That’s a really high number. Does anyone have an alternate source for these?

  30. Skip Morgan on February 20, 2022 at 11:31 pm

I’m a 67 year old farmer. Seeds keep forever. Keep them dry and they are good.

  32. MissJoaniB on February 20, 2022 at 11:33 pm

As a newbie in Zone 3, I really really appreciate that you mention the different zone considerations. I also like that, with this method, you don’t lose the package information!

  38. Connecticut Worms & Gardens on February 20, 2022 at 11:39 pm

I watched this video hoping to find something more affordable than my current seed storage system. I was a little surprised to see that this video features the *exact same* system I am using. Down to the seller, size, and even color of the exterior. The iris photo storage boxes come in a variety of colors. My problem? Two of them are $60. I’ve already filled 8 and more than half of my seeds don’t fit in it. I have a extensive seed collection.
I’ve spent $240 for the first 8. Would need to spend at least $240 more dollars for another 8 and I suspect I would need four or six more beyond that. I can’t afford $1,000 on seed storage containers. Back to the drawing board.
I need something that can hold a thousand packets or more of seeds, I’m sure that’s way understating it.

  39. Map Of The Soul: Tag Me on February 20, 2022 at 11:39 pm

For my regular sized seed packages, I close the opening with clips if I opened that seed bag already. I store all of them in a small cardboard box. I have this large bag of strawberry bulbs that don’t fit in there so I put it in an empty frozen veggie bag that can reseal at the top, like a ziploc bag that I didn’t have to pay extra for.

  40. Michael Boroski on February 20, 2022 at 11:41 pm

Too much plastic found a Tea organizer that fits seed packets perfectly and made from bamboo

  41. P. PF. on February 20, 2022 at 11:42 pm

That is fucking geneious,… Came for such a solution. I am not disappointed. 😀 here in germany it is 30-40€ though for a box like yours. I guess if your mild OCD reached this level it is also definetly worth it 😀 inspired by someones comment; you could poke small holes in one of the containers and put some silica gel in it.

  43. Soil, Soap and Sunshine on February 20, 2022 at 11:44 pm

Great video. Just love love love the way you store your seeds. I’ll be doing this. Also in Australia, all the seeds have a "Sow before" date. Interesting. Usually they have a "scheduled viability" of 3 years. Thanks again.

  44. The Philosopher on February 20, 2022 at 11:46 pm

    Great thing at great price.

  45. Mindy T on February 20, 2022 at 11:48 pm

Dude! What is this grow light shelf behind you, I want to buy one!

  46. Randall Baker on February 20, 2022 at 11:48 pm

Thanks for the tips! I find year old seed packs after the season of growing that Walmart has discarded in a big dumpster behind the store.

  47. Tooshie G on February 20, 2022 at 11:49 pm

So I’m assuming you don’t store seeds in a freezer – or you have a humongous freezer

  48. My Austin Kitchen on February 20, 2022 at 11:50 pm

I do not have that many seeds yet so I use photo album to store my packets 😀

  49. mylightofhope on February 20, 2022 at 11:51 pm

I like this idea better than what I currently do and will still consider it. I have mine currently stored in a plastic rectangular box with lid and tried organizing with index cards as to when to plant placed in between sections. Well, it can be difficult thumbing through all of them and then quickly placing back inside when done planting in the "right" place can be mire cumbersome. I thought I saw someone recently have theirs stored like in pickets in a notebook, so you can quickly flip through and see what you have and what you might need to order. Again that sounds fairly easy for pulling the seeds out for planting and putting back in too.
