Will the straw stop or reduce the amt of weeds? I have so many weeds that I have been pulling.

Good stuff! I’m personally a fan of anything you can get off your own property as it doesn’t have to be shipped from anywhere, and if not that then stuff you can get that isn’t packaged in plastic bags (which of course creates plastic waste). I use pine straw, leaves, and wood mulch that I get in bulk for free.

Are live oak leaves okay to use as a mulch or are they to acidic. I have many live oak trees on my property, so these leaves are plentiful.

Joe, you "Mad Dog", I am gonna try your weedwack, garbage bucket, leaf trick! Thank you

We planted some young courgettes and pumpkins and mulched them with old hay – and had a big slug attack. Received advice that it is best not to mulch young plants and wait until they are more mature. / http://www.rainwaterrunoff.com

    I like rice straw

I used straw, and know have sprouts everywhere in my garden…any ideas as to how to combat?

  14. Dan Scott on August 5, 2021 at 9:53 pm

    Will hay mulch sprout?

  15. B M on August 5, 2021 at 9:54 pm

How do you feel about mini pine bark nuggets if I dont start from seed?

  16. Paul Dick on August 5, 2021 at 9:58 pm

Thanks for the info! I use grass clippings and leaves as well. I just bought hay to spread in my veggie garden and also plan to use it in my chicken pen. I mulch to kill weeds and also find it ascetically pleasing.

2:38 see how is he shredding leaves for mulch.

  18. Murielle Cordemans on August 5, 2021 at 10:00 pm

Oak leaves are they good? I read they don’t break down so fast? And they would influence the soil in a bad way? Can you clarify? Thanks

Awesome video Joe, thanks for sharing! Will be using straw this year!

  20. Andie Lynne on August 5, 2021 at 10:02 pm

Thank you so much for putting out an excellent video and exactly what I was looking for. I have watched 10 videos on the best Mulch and your video got straight to the point. no underlying messages about trying to get someone to buy some thing, or rambling on and on for 20 minutes before getting to the point. Love the video thank you for the advice it’s exactly what I was looking for.

Thank you for keeping me motivated. I managed to throw in a bunch of seeds into my huge mulch piles which consisted of 17 loads of mulch from a tree service. It took almost 2 years for it to become good dirt. I had also added 4000 red Wigler worms to it to help the process. I am about as crippled as could be. I used the garden hoe as a walker. Just imagine. It was probably the best day I’ve had lately. I shoved in as much seeds as I could and because the dirt was crumbly soft it was easy. Today after taking lots of medication I managed to go see that my sweet potatoes are sprouting, and I’m not sure because I did everything so fast I believe my lettuce and kale are also sprouting. I no longer drive because of double vision and blurry vision. I have a pace maker too. I have a long term disability policy and at times they have gone six months without sending me a check. Matter of fact they cheated me out of an entire month. I have a demyelinating disease. I will be undergoing DNA test to see if I have Charcot Marie tooth. disease soon. Right now I can’t even hardly walk with my walker. My sister has my wheelchair but it really doesn’t matter I can’t seem to get myself in and out when I really need it. I am hoping for a garden that does all the work itself. I live in an area where rainfall is quite high so I really don’t need to go water anything and with all the mulch it stays moist. I am trying to get more mulch delivered to the house. I called several times and I believe I will have to call several more times and work on their sympathy. Believe it or not before I was in this condition I planted lots of fruit trees. When the insurance company decides that they will try to starve me it will not work. I have probably in the neighborhood of 100 fruit trees. I may not eat what I want but I will eat. All the supermarkets in my area consist of lots of walking. And because I am in this condition those little baskets just will not handle the amount of food I need. And because I don’t drive I have to inconvenience people that would prefer that I don’t ask. I know they are busy. Up until a little over three years ago I was quite self-reliant. Matter of fact I was probably the most independent person you come across. My family still thinks I’m able bodied. I am not only not able bodied I am forgetting things. I have fallen two times this week and one time I didn’t fall but I couldn’t get myself out of the bathtub. And I’m not safe to take a shower. I’ve had close to 20 falls this week +2 actual falls. I don’t even bother telling them anymore. What’s the point? I really don’t feel sorry for myself I’m just in lots of pain. And the medication is not working. I assume it’s around 3:30 AM. Can’t sleep too much pain. LOL I’m sure they’ll show up if I have lots of vegetables. I’m not a cranky old hag. I’m actually quite young. Until I get a diagnosis my family won’t believe how sick I am. I broke my foot three times in 16 months. No it was not painful. I lost all my feeling in my feet and now I’m losing all my feeling in my fingers and hands. It’s moving up my legs too. Can’t wait for winter to be over with. I usually do better in warmer weather. Before I was totally incapacitated I tried to make me a raised bed. I was going to work my way on taking my old bricks and making a 3 sided garden. I wanted to put a picnic table and a barbecue pit in the center. Family members did not like my plans and a little bit of mulch that I worked my way to bringing they sprayed it with weed killer and other stuff and spread it out. So much for an organic garden. I would throw my potato peels and onion peels, etc. over the mulch. My yard is beautiful. But what I was doing they were complaining that it did not look good. I should state that I am 100% of the property I’m on and not even the bank can you lay claim to it. And due to the fact that I am disabled I no longer have to pay property tax. I now have a good portion of my food delivered through Amazon. I sealed all the cracks to my house and I played a insulated blanket on my hot water heater. I added an attachment to my dryer it pushes hot moist air into my house from the dryer. I now only really dry clothes and very cold days. In the summer I try to hang it above my washing machine and dryer to dry it self. I purchased probably in the neighborhood of 70 little Rubbermaid containers. When I cook with a pressure cooker I store all my food in the freezer and I pull out what I want when I want to eat it. I do miss having fresh vegetables. I even like eating raw potatoes. Matter of fact I like raw sweet potatoes also. I have a ramp at the front part of my house but I don’t have one at my patio door. It is getting hard to get in and out of the house on that side. I need new batteries on my golf cart because as far as I’m concerned that is my exterior wheelchair. I will have fresh vegetables this year! You could bank on it. Last but not least I refuse to be put in the nursing home!

Hey Joe. I’m looking in to mulches, because my tomatoes are very prone to early blight. I’m looking in to straw or cedar mulch. What is your opinion on cedar? Not good for a veg garden?

  23. Crystal on August 5, 2021 at 10:07 pm

Thank you Joe! How do feel about peet moss? I found a big bag in my shed so I was considering using it. It’s finer than I was expecting.

  24. Ty Gevas on August 5, 2021 at 10:09 pm

I bought some straw from my feed store. Applied it and now I have tons of grass and weeds sprouting. I don’t so much care about the look or anything just curious if I leave it in will it rob nutrients from my other plants im growing in it? Or should I remove all the weeds?

  25. Evan Beauvais on August 5, 2021 at 10:11 pm

Do the leaves need to be dry? I live in the Northeast and since I didn’t plan ahead, by this spring they will have spent months soaking up moisture from snow, etc.

Thanks Joe! What do you think of coco coir as a mulch? It’s hard for me to find straw mulch in LA but was able to get coco coir from Home Depot.

  30. Landscape Matters on August 5, 2021 at 10:17 pm

Great info. I like to use a good layer of compost to mulch

  31. Brian Martin on August 5, 2021 at 10:18 pm

Why no mention at all of grass clippings? I get them for free from neighbors who don’t mulch as as they mow, and never had a problem with them

  32. Paula Nix on August 5, 2021 at 10:18 pm

are you concerned about straw that had Grazeon sprayed on it?

  33. Catherine Watson on August 5, 2021 at 10:19 pm

Brought to you by Corona! Lol! Thanks for the valuable gardening info! You’re awesome!

I put down a product called EZ straw. Now I keep hearing mixed reviews on this product. Many that love it and some that said it caused grass or barely to grow throughout the bed. Is that an issue normally with straw? EZ straw claims 99% free of weed seed.

How do you feel about cedar mulch in the vegetable garden?

  38. 666toysoldier on August 5, 2021 at 10:21 pm

The old jute-fiber carpet padding worked great around tomatoes, but it’s no longer available. If you get wood chips, be sure not to get walnut, as it poisons the soil.

  39. Artie 3xt on August 5, 2021 at 10:28 pm

What do you use to shred your leaves? Also, should I be concerned about chemical additives in packaged bark mulch affecting my veggies?

  40. Robert Buckley on August 5, 2021 at 10:29 pm

Never trust straw, hay, or any grass based mulch from 3rd party sources! (At least in the US) Many of them are laced with Grazon and will kill your gardens for YEARS!

Cannot tell you how many gardens have been lost in my area due to Grazon laced straw, hay, manure, and even finished compost from a bag! Even if you buy local there is no way to tell what they sprayed on their fields.

I’m in New Mexico and ironically leaves aren’t nearly as abundant as most places. 😋

I just pile my leaves up, run the mower over them in one direction only, and voila! Mulch that breaks down pretty quickly.

  45. Viola McShannon on August 5, 2021 at 10:34 pm

Mine is grass clippings all summer for
Mulch. Then in fall we mow up the leaves with the grass.
