Thank You CaliKim, we are blessed that our parents are quite active! We struggle at times with the "leisure/enjoyment" aspect of gardening! Mother and Dad have a "work button"’; installed during the Depression (the Other Depression) that goes full on fourteen hours per day or full off! I don’t mean to criticize; just an observation. They are great help; after all they taught me! They also benefit from your videos in that, they are coming to realize that sheer tonnage is not the only goal! TNX!

I would love to but the only time I tried to upload a video it showed a upload time of like 8 hours. This was for a 4 minute video I took in Pensacola . Im not sure what Im doing wrong or missing but the upload time was way too long every time I tried. I wish I knew how to solve the upload time.

And there were a lot of scams and exaggerations like rock dust compost tea over watering and worm castings. These all have uses but they’re over used. Worms will make their own compost if you throw any organic matter down. Worm castings are only good for seedlings becuz they inoculate the roots with good bacteria that’s it. The plant will then feed the bacteria it likes. Rock dust is good but you need like….. a tiny ass amount. They’re called trace minerals for a reason. Just a few pounds per acre. Compost tea is stupid never use it just add compost it’s a way for people to make money. Cover crops or mulch are your babes and go no till if you have the balls.

Hi djchinatown – great question. Actually, they are in the flower. As soon as the flower starts to dry on the stem, you cut it off and dry the flowers further inside. The seeds can be harvested by rubbing the dry flowers together in your hands to separate the seed. They flower the second year (if you keep them in the ground that long), and are truly beautiful. I am enjoying mine! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Glad you found it helpful – and that your tomatoes are doing well this year. If you want to, go to the video "Here’s your Chance" and post a video response of your garden to share with viewers. Would love to see your tomatoes! Thanks for watching.

From what I’ve read about carrots, they will sometimes bolt the second season if they are left in the ground. I didn’t pick these carrots last summer, they overwintered, and then bolted in the early summer this year. The tops are not dry and I have thousands of seeds I could harvest. I’m not sure how you would provoke them to bolt other than just leave them in the ground for two seasons. Let me know if you figure out a way. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks, Dwayne. This is exactly why I made this video. I remember how lost I was when I was a new gardener and I want to help people get started in any way I can.

  21. CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY on August 1, 2021 at 8:52 pm

HI Sam – Yes, there are definite benefits to plants like marigolds – bugs don’t like the scent and they are good to plant all over your garden. I have lots of them, and while I still have bugs – hopefully not as many as I would have. Good tip about composting them. Look up "companion planting" and you will get lots of great info! Thanks for your wisdom and for watching!

  22. CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY on August 1, 2021 at 8:53 pm

Hi toobphish – that is a great idea to have a varmint buffer! I do that as well by planting lots of chard, which the earwigs and pill bugs love, in hopes that they will stay away from my other crops. You are so blessed ot have your parents help you with your gardening! Typo in my above comment- what i meant to say is that the tops are NOW dry, instead of NOT dry. Hopefully you will have lots of carrot seeds next summer.

  31. CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY on August 1, 2021 at 9:00 pm

They had to work to survive! Different mentality than kids are taught these days, that’s for sure! I have to chuckle and your "sheer tonnage" comment! But you can see how that comes from the Depression years. Nowadays we do have the luxury of enjoying our gardening – but there may come a time again when it does come down to survival. That is why I feel it is so important to learn and teach these skills. Thanks so much for your comments and God bless your parents for being so supportive!

  32. Samuel Kerbo on August 1, 2021 at 9:01 pm

Hi calikim I was wondering if certain plants could be characterized as beneficial. My father use to own 3 nurserys when he was younger and said that he grew marigold to put it in a separate compost pile and then used it to kill harmful pest in flower beds or in his garden. from what I’ve seen from me doing it, is that it works. So i just wanted to exchange some wisdom for an answer. Thank you

    -sam

  33. SuperRigs on August 1, 2021 at 9:02 pm

very informative but some of the terms just don’t need to be explain like " seed saving " the term is explaining itself. But overall very nice

Great video you should continue to do videos like this. ๐Ÿ–’๐Ÿ–’๐Ÿ–’

  35. G Kuljian on August 1, 2021 at 9:06 pm

Oh no. I’m just getting ready to begin gardening for the first time. I live in Mendocino, and you made me realize I already have a problem- banana slugs EVERYWHERE. I’m still looking forward to this though.

  36. KLisaLisa on August 1, 2021 at 9:08 pm

I love your retaining wall! You might want to do a video on that even if you didn’t build it, you can show it off for people to get ideas.

  37. toobphish on August 1, 2021 at 9:10 pm

Thanks for this video! Especially for the "bolting" carrots. I had never seen that before and now I’m wondering if I can intentionally provoke my remaining carrots to "bolt" and go to seed; it seems like it might be too late?!? TNX Again!

  38. Marco Polo on August 1, 2021 at 9:12 pm

My name is Kenny from northern Kentucky look up the history of biochar for gardening tell everyone you know passed it on

  39. Dale Allen on August 1, 2021 at 9:13 pm

Great Gardening tips …. You look awesome , I guess that’s what good food will do for you .

  40. toobphish on August 1, 2021 at 9:13 pm

Thanks for responding! I actually had planned to leave some of the carrots in the ground as a "varmint buffer" between my tomatoes/peppers and the raccoon/nutria world. Now if I can just keep "Mr & Mrs Champion Gardener" (my parents!) from mistakenly hoeing them up during the off-season, perhaps they will bolt early next summer. TNX Again!

  46. Grow Your Heirlooms on August 1, 2021 at 9:20 pm

Great video. To me sustainable also includes heirlooms being grown and adapted to a particular system within that eco-climate you create. In creating this adaptation, they become more resistant to disease and pests. JMHO

    thank you for the lesson

  48. fred sub on August 1, 2021 at 9:23 pm

    Thanks for the reply,
I have some ghost peppers, kale, and a few Indian curry leaf plants. I also have a few Japanese Maple trees, mostly all in containers. I went to the UC Berkeley Botanical gardens last Sunday with my Horticulture group.

  49. SuperRigs on August 1, 2021 at 9:23 pm

one question does bolting means leaving the plant without sun for a while and then after sometimes leave it out so it will produce seed

  50. CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY on August 1, 2021 at 9:23 pm

Good point – I do use all heirloom seeds. And this year I plan to do more seed saving also – creating disease and pest resistant plants is what I hope to accomplish over the long run. Thanks for your comment!
