Thank you! I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with what to do with a 4 x 8 in ground garden section I found on our property. I thought I had to buy good soils for the entire area. I appreciate the guidance. I can’t wait to get my plants in the ground.

Digging & spading is way too much work – especially for older people. Try making post holes and back fill with a mix or garden soil & compost. It works for us old folks. (Actually, the post hole method works better). Once the post holes are established, they can be used over year to year and you don’t need to spend money on wood frames.

  21. B L on August 4, 2021 at 9:54 pm

I remember my father used to take the wood ashes out of his stove and put it into our garden and it was very helpful because of the minerals from the wood ashes I think the ground has been depleted because we’re not putting the right stuff back into the ground seaweed from the ocean is excellent if you chop it up and put it in your garden and I’m sure you know about that I remember a few years back my neighbour was having some problems with growing his plants so I told him to put some wood ashes from his camp pit that he had outside around in his backyard and he told me that most of his vegetables and everything grew twice as big by using the wood ashes.
Hardwoods, including oak, maple, ash, hickory, sycamore, walnut, apple and cherry, burn hotter and longer. They also produce several times more ash and contain more nutrients than softwoods like pine and fir.
My dad wouldn’t use wood that was treated with chemicals or were painted and throwing into the wood stove. So you have to be careful about what you’re burning in your back pit before you put the ashes in your garden that is for sure
    I just Googled this….
Do not spread ashes around acid-loving plants like blueberries, strawberries,Β azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, holly, potatoes or parsley. Plants that thrive with a dressing of wood ash include garlic, chives, leeks, lettuces, asparagus and stone-fruit trees.
    Tomatoes love wood ashes

  23. B L on August 4, 2021 at 9:54 pm

I was raised with couch grass that grass is terrible and so to have a garden my dad would use a screen first filter it through a large Screen.
We’d have a wheelbarrow and have the wood frame with the screen built into it and then we would take that wheelbarrow full of screen material and put it to a finer screen that rate we would get a lot of the weeds out and then we would hand pick a lot of the weeds it was a lot of work so there would be no way we would turn the sod over and then put other material in in it because in the long run you got so many weeds if you do it that way

Great videos, I have a question, I am in FL, does it make sense to have your tomato plants alive in december and try to get them through the winter to produce again? Or should you not plant at all, kill them off and wait until feb or march to put the plants in the ground, it seems my tomato plants that made it through the winter have become disease ridden. TY again Gary

Every time your chopping that up what you’re doing is also chopping up the weeds and every time you do that there’s more weeds that come and then you’ll have so many weeds that you have to deal with

You do know hot peppers will cross pollinate & make your sweet peppers hot?

  43. B L on August 4, 2021 at 10:21 pm

Sometimes what I like to do with a new Garden is put black plastic after you remove the sod and take out as much weeds as you can. and then what I would do is make holes in the plastic where you going to put the new plants that way you can water in the holes you don’t have to water the whole garden as well as it keeps the weeds down because the weeds don’t get the the light there in darkness and you’re not watering them so it really helps to have black tarp on your garden I don’t know if you’ve done it that way before
