Starting The Winter Herb Garden
Starting The Winter Herb Garden
If you start your garden in the winter you have enough practice to hit the ground running when Spring arrives. Herbs work best for this since they germinate slowly and don’t take up a lot of space.

"Motherless gardens" how I chuckled. I have never been much of a gardener and built some raised beds earlier this year, planted some stuff and most seeds never came up or those who did, no matter how I watered, were just killed in our heat waves. So we live and learn and starting new seedlings as I did not use all the seeds, but cheated a bit by buying seedlings for my veggie bed and they are doing well so far. I will probably make a lid for my bed on hinges that can protect them in extreme heat and cold, that is my next step. I realised it will be trial and error and loads of patience but I am so enjoying using green stuff from my own garden
Very helpful. Thank you.
Hi Julie, How is the experiment with the rabbits in the attic going? Are they experiencing any issues getting accustomed to the environment?
I use the Black Gold too where I live you can buy it at Fred Meyers.
love your videos off gridd or on gridd
so strange hearing english speaking saying smörgåsbord 🙂
This is my project for the next week or so. I have tried in the past to grow herbs without success. This year will be a good year!
Thanks Julie for showing us how you start your plants. I had Stevia from Migardener last year and it did not germinate. I started parsley oregano and sage and basil that did take but I really need a grow light the heat pad Luke showed that it may get too hot and to put a cardboard between the bottom of the base plant holder. Do you use a heat pad or is the grow light enough?
I bought Stevia plants by Bonnie at Walmart and got 3 started outside and even got some starts that are rooted for an early start next yeat. I brought a whole plant inside and its doing just ok. I wanted those green leaves to chew with my coffee. I steap the leaves all summer for my drinks. I love it in my kombucha after it is poured into a glass. I’ll be watching for updates.
I also use my plastic food containers for seed markers, but I add the date planted to my tags. It’s just what works for me. Great video, enjoyed watching it.
Take care – Marcie
i will be starting my herbs in jan ! …. how bout them pat’s, just got owned by Miami 😉
"Motherless gardens all over the country" 🤣🤣🤣👍
Thanks! I love this type of video! I can’t relate to the spinning/knitting/wool ones, but these gardening videos are really inspiring!
Great content, thanks. 🤙
YAY! Winter herb gardens are the best. I have a planter right in my kitchen under an under-cabinet light.
I’m glad to see you’re starting seeds! I feel like I need to start some soon after I locate my lights!
I don’t see where you say you got seed from Luke for 99 cent. Can you send the link? Thank you.
The comfrey I bought has seeds which are supposed to be sterile. Propagation by root-cuttings only. Isn’t this likely to be very invasive?
I find burpee seeds don’t germinate well for me. Especially in miracle grow soil so you have a lot better luck than I.
U mentioned the use of perlite then mentioned the beneficial bacteria that u need for plant/soil health. Im curious to know if yr familiar w the names perhaps or classifications of these bacteria? Like miscelia perhaps? We use wood and as it breaks down i see the stringy bits of goodies i add to my garden. Ive seen Luke’s video where he mentions this and makes reference to the great benefits of miscelia. I have awful clay HARD DRY soil, so i have to work it and build on top of it in order to successfully grow anything. Any info on building up soil is appreciated. Btw have u ever heard of Living Web Farms? Its a useful channel for reference the vids are LONG but easy listening SOMETIMES if u can get wifi in ur yard while workin😉. The vid Pat Battle hosts on beneficial predatory bugs tho requires a bit of a sit down to be able to identify bugs and plants. They have a soil health video but sadly the video was a video taped seminar that rambled in a few directions then would get back on track and it was just toooooo long for me. Tfs this 🌱 i need to fix my winter blahs. We went from 86 to 40 in 3 days during October❄ im already OVER winter 😣.
motherless gardens all over the country.
HA!!!
that is gold.
hello again u smell herbacious. like mint corriander and italian parsley. i’ll add a little stevia along with my sugar but really dont care for the taste.
How do you store the leftover seeds?
to firm the soil just use a second sheet of planting cells. Place on top of the filled tray (as if you were nesting them) and gently press down. No need to pat pat pat pat with fingertips.
