Are the plants safe for children to put them on balcony? How likely is it for children to be hurt by the thorns?

I messed up and bought a variety which is not self fertile (Edgarโ€™s Baby). I still love to grow it but itโ€™s so easy to propagate that now I have like 8 aggressively large potted cacti which will never fruit. Whoops.

My question is about heat. I live in Las Vegas, NV USA. Weโ€™re in the Mojave Desert where it can easily hit 120 degrees F in the summer and go below freezing a few nights during the winter. Not much grows here. I currently have five dragonfruit plants in the house, and they love it, but at some point theyโ€™ll get too big and need to go outside. Will they survive? Should I plant them where they get less direct sun to prevent them from burning? I really want these plants to do well, but Iโ€™m afraid for them. Help!

  42. Luke Powell on February 26, 2022 at 11:44 pm

Apparently tipping the branches is the go to encourage fruiting, try cutting 1-2 inches off the end of the branches on a few before it is due to flower and see if that helps production.

Hi Mark. The colourful abino decorative cactus have a graft plant that is very similar to a dragon fruit plant. I have established one and it is getting large and attaching itself to my balcony. It has never flowered. I am just wondering if it is worth keeping or is it now just a weird weed. It is not pretty.

  44. Jenny Moss on February 26, 2022 at 11:46 pm

This has been so interesting. Iโ€™ve always wanted to try a dragon fruit, but Iโ€™ve never seen one. It would be great to grow one, but I live in the U.K. so not sure how easy it would be.

  45. Peter Brill on February 26, 2022 at 11:49 pm

I had a dragon fruit once and found it to be bland almost…is that thier taste or was it a unripe fruit

  46. Victor Hyman on February 26, 2022 at 11:49 pm

  47. bell G on February 26, 2022 at 11:51 pm

I agree with you observation of the plant developing fruit when it hangs over a bit more or else it will continue to grow taller.

  48. Real Facts on February 26, 2022 at 11:52 pm

I had a dragon fruit in a large pot which I put in a place where it got at least 6 hours of sunlight, and yet it got scorched/burnt although I made sure the soil always had enough moisture balance. I had to move it to a shade because some of the stalks started to turn yellow. What was happening? Can you explain, please? Thank you in advance.
