3 Methods for Pruning Herbs To Stimulate New Growth

3 Methods for Pruning Herbs To Stimulate New Growth

When pruning herbs for harvest or for shape, it’s vital to follow the ‘rules’ of the plant…the way it naturally grows. This way you’ll stimulate new, delicious growth as well as shape the plant over the course of the season or seasons.

We’ll be pruning rosemary, green onions, and of course the classic basil in this video to demonstrate a few different approaches.

How would you prune sage? My plant is needing a good prune. Also–how do I get rid of gnats on my herbs. They are driving me crazy.

Can you explain how to best grow TARRAGON? I’ve never had good luck with this plant — it just sits there in full sun.

How you keep bugs out of your basil? Your leaves look so good and I’m losing, if not already lost all of my basil. Whatever it is, is ignoring my rosemary and thyme. It kind of messes with my mint but loves my basil.

Can we eat the basil flowers? Check, nevermind.
Kevin, what other plants can I snip and use without harvesting? How do I know when needs full harvest? First year garden. So much to do, learn, know and buy!

Awesome video! Quick question, I never cut back my herb garden last fall and it doesn’t look that good. As spring is almost here, should I just cut it back like I should have or is there a specific way to prune in the spring? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. P.S. Love your channel.

What is the name of the tree behind you at 7:15 of this video? One started growing in my garden with the same exact leaves but we don’t know what it’s called? Btw…great video

Thyme, oregeno, parsley, mint. Can you show more herbs & how to prune those?

  18. Captain Vaan Smith on June 13, 2022 at 9:24 pm

You’re thinking of Hydra not medusa.

  19. Epic Gardening on June 13, 2022 at 9:25 pm

Clarification: For green onions, you can cut 1-2" above the soil, but I find the technique I described to work better for maximizing green top harvest, then you can pull and use the entire green onion once you’ve gotten what you want from the tops.

  20. Karla Hamilton on June 13, 2022 at 9:27 pm

Can you make a video on dill, cilantro and parsley??

    Lime basil is my favorite

  28. meikusje on June 13, 2022 at 9:31 pm

I have a really large and unruly rosemary bush that needs pruning, and all sources I’ve found say to prune after it has flowered. But now you say it should have been done months ago :’) can I still cut it back now after it has flowered, or should I wait another year?

  29. Pamela Bronson on June 13, 2022 at 9:31 pm

I love this video! There is one thing however digging at my brain… It is the head of the Hydra that multiplies when cut; not Medusa’s head. That was used by Persius to kill the Kraken.

  30. Frank `Starnes on June 13, 2022 at 9:32 pm

Very much would like to see tarragon ,thyme, oregano and mint trimmed.

Hi there, do you have info on pruning cilantro or parsley or dill?? I’m new at this and would love to not kill them.

  36. DJ Ratino on June 13, 2022 at 9:42 pm

I have Italian cilantro growing. It’s starting to get woody and the bottoms are dying off. I tried pruning the tops off. What do I need to do to bring it back? Or do I need to reseed it and start new?🌿🌾

    How to

  40. Olivia12333 on June 13, 2022 at 9:47 pm

Haha I feel kinda bad for that basil plant. It’s put in all that effort to grow those flowers to fulfill its life purpose, and riiight before it bears seeds some monster comes by and cuts off all of them, complaining that the leaves don’t taste the same.

For the rest of its life it will keep growing, trying to produce enough nutrition to make those flowers. And every time it’s cut off and torn down. Eventually it will die having never born a child.

  41. Elizabeth Potter on June 13, 2022 at 9:47 pm

    It’s hydra not Medusa

I have been watching you for weeks now – I love your videos!!So…. my rosemary won’t overwinter (Zone 3) My question is, if I bury a pot in the garden and just put my pot of rosemary in it, will I be able to bring the plant into the house come September?

Any tips on edible potted gardens in coastal environments with substantially salty air? My lemongrass and native shrubs are well-established, catnip barely hanging on, but everything else burns or shrivels. 😥

Medusa famously did in fact, not grow her head back
