I have old books, usually by the RHS, I hope you can add me to your list of candidates. I would love the Charles Dowding book on growing winter vegetables 🙂
I have to agree with Bill’s Allotments. My all time favorite is the Victorian Kitchen Garden with Harry Dobson. If only I can get my hands on an American version DVD or someone Please put it back on YouTube.I like the month to month style books and videos because I can adjust the planting for my warmer zone. Not many out there does a "What to do" for each month.
Zoom in a bit on that Celeraic page, I’m trying to figure that one out! 😅 Great recs, I think I might get that one. Thanks for posting!! I’m not even sure what my top 3 books would be… hmm. WIll have to think on that one.
The book that got me started so many years ago..Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew a gift from my brother I treasure. My bible/work horse/problem solver is Rosales Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening. And finally The $64 Tomato by William Alexander as it just sings to my heart and the great lengths those of us who are garden obsessed will go to! Been a fan of your channel for over a year and TY for introducing me to Liz’s channel via your recent video and this collaboration has further expanded my enjoyment of more channels to check out.
HI ,I have an allotment in Edinburgh and enjoy watching your videos I find them most helpful. The three books I read most are 2 x Charles Dowding,Organic Gardening & Veg. journal, the third is By Dr. D. G. Hessayon called The Greenhouse Expert,I have plenty of other gardening books but these three I would not be without.
You have a great book collection. I’d like the book that shows you how to cook vegetables. Wow what a treat 💛can’t wait for your new book
If Liz gives you flack for 4 books, remind her of when she threw a duck into the chicken breed collaboration! I actually found your channel through your collaboration with Liz’s turkeys to haul wood chips. Those guys kept you in line!
Hi Huw. Thank you so very much for the book recommendations. Charles Dowding’s , Growing Winter Vegetables, is also one of my top gardening books!
Didn’t see anything for people outside the UK in your video description, did I miss something?
Gardening books are THE BEST!
Taking Huw’s lead and stretching the 3 book suggestion…..
Jackie French Backyard self sufficiency
The Australian Fruit and Vegetable Garden Clive Blazey
Gaia’s Garden Toby Hemmenway
Louis Glowinski The Complete Book of Fruit Growing in Australia
And the series of booklets produced by The Koanga Institute in NZ.
Plus
One Magic Square Lolo Houbein
Square Foot Gardening Mel Bartholemew
The Earth User’s guide to Permaculture Ro Morrow.
And I suspect I’ll be adding the 2 Highly Commended books mentioned by Huw as well.
🙂
Charles Dowding’s Vegetable Garden Diary full of advice on when to sow plant and harvest,
advice on no dig gardening which I highly recomend as a method of gardening for people with limited mobilty. His YouTube vidioes are very informative, he also has ebooks available on Kindle
He’s a bit of a guru is that Mr Dowding, I wasnt aware of his winter veg book so Im heading off to amazon soon to add it to my wishlist. Cheers Huw, great video.
I’d like to add The market Gardener by Jean-Martin Fortier, surprised nobody mentioned Oriental Vegetables by Joy Larkom (any book by her is great btw) and another great one is Myceleum running by Paul Stamets. There are lots more for instance Epic Tomatoes by Craig le Houllier and The new Organic Grower Eliot Coleman. You did 4 I ‘5’ish.
Books I don’t have. Thank you so much. You asked for our favs, so here are my most often used. 1.Texas Fruits & Vegetable Gardening by Greg Grant (get an area-specific gardening book), 2. All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew, 3. Rosemary Gladstar’s herbal books—Medicinal Herbs and Herbal Recipes which were recommended to me some time ago by Rain Country, and finally 4. Four-Season Harvest by Eliot Coleman.
Hello! Love this collab, it’s fun seeing everyone fav books. Good book choices 🙂
trouble with all these books is too much reading and not enough doing😂😂😂
Charles Dowding how to grow winter veg book is fantastic. I have read it a few times. Worth buying folks. Great video Huw. fab books I have them all already 🙂
Good choices Huw. The Veg & Herb Expert is on my list too.
Steve
Y tri sydd ‘da fi:
Gardeners’ World: The Veg Grower’s Almanac: Month by Month Planning and Planting gan Martyn Cox
Pests and Diseases gan Pippa Greenwood
ac yn olaf un Cymraeg gwych: Blodau Gwyllt Cymru ac Ynysoedd Prydain gan John Akeroyd a Bethan Wyn Jones
Haha! I bent the rules too – glad I am not alone! Thank you for being a part of this collaboration and for sharing your top picks 😀
Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte
Homegrown Pantry by Barbara Pleasant
Worms Eat My Garbage by Mary Appelhof
Nice choices! My 3 books would be:
Allotment month by month (DK) – for a general, cover-all reference book. It is great to have it done chronologically too – makes it practical to know what to do when!
Grow your own vegetables by Joy Larkcom – but more dense but full of so much information and love for growing veg – really inspiring!
Grow for Flavour by James Wong – one of the joys of growing your own veg is growing something you can’t buy in the shop, or just having it taste so much better. This gives some great hints and tips.
I do love Charles Dowding too!
Best three books for New Zealand gardeners, by sisters Mary Browne, Helen Leach and Nancy Tichbourne, The Cooks Garden (classic!), The Cooks Salad Garden and The Cooks Herb Garden. 😁
Can it & ferment it
Storey’s guide to Raising Pig
Backyard foraging
So excited for YOUR book!!
Our 3 books:
One Straw Revolution – Masanobu Fukuoka
Gaia’s Garden – Toby Hemenway
Medicinal Plants – Wolfgang Hensel
Huw, I do I order your new book " The Vegetable Grower’s Handbook: Unearth Your Gardens Full Potential!". I’m trying to order from the States and would prefer going through you… Thank you for your great work!
first I hope it’s a best seller sir great news 🙂 my three books to suggest would be the square foot method , Lasagna gardening and back to basics all are packed with great tips and you can combine them as well 🙂 Good luck to the winners
Great book choices Huw.
My three would be:
Pick, cook, brew by Suzanne Beedell – A book passed to me from my Mom, that I have used over and over for foraging, and preserving. A simple yet very useful book.
Second – Plant propagation A-Z by Geoff Bryant.
A practical guide to all different types of propagation, which I have used to refine skills, but also try out new methods that I wouldn’t of done before.
And finally – RHS sowing from seed. Similar to the reasons above, it teaches how to propagate, but also how to save seeds – because who doesn’t like free plants!
Take care, Jaz
Great competition Huw, I wont be entering myself but good luck to everyone who does, also, good luck with your book Huw!
I have watched 5 or so of the videos in the collab, and your choices are my favorites. I love that you featured 2 of Charles Dowdings books, he is amazing, great expert, author, wonderful YT channel and a very nice man who takes the time to answer comments and give advice. Also love the you have a Geoff Hamilton book and I am going to look for the other veg and herb book you suggest. Thank you, Huw! P.s. i dont own any of them, but other books I would like to have are by Geoffrey Smith. I adore the Mr. Smith Gardens videos.
Awesome that you’re writing a book Huw! Looking forward to getting a signed copy!
My 3 books are : 1. Allotment month by month
2.Grow All You Can Eat In Three Square Feet: Inventive Ideas for Growing Food in a Small Space
3. Patio Produce: How to Cultivate a Lot of Home-grown Vegetables from the Smallest Possible Space
From my choice of books, you may tell I don’t really have an allotment, i just do it at my back garden. I have six 2mx1m raised beds 🙂
Thanks for the suggestions. I’m definitely checking out the no dig book.
I enjoy books that look at growing food from a permaculture and self-sufficiency point of view so my top 3 would be:
Practical self sufficiency by Dick and James Strawbridge
The Permaculture Garden by Graham Bell
And finally, River Cottage Handbook No.4 The Veg Patch
1. Gaia’s Garden – Toby Hemenway
2. Permaculture – Sepp Holzer
3. Restoration Agriculture – Mark Shepard
HOW did I miss these books? I’d love to enter your raffle. My favorite gardening books are:
1. The Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch. I’m only in my second year of gardening, and whatever plant you want to grow, she walks you through…basically everything.
2. The Self-Sufficient Gardener by John Seymour. This inspired me to try and be self-sufficient (as much as one can be) when it comes to produce. I’ve planted fruit trees and bushes, raised more perennials, and made more ambitious plans this year.
Third one is a German book, but I think Storl is published in English-language too:
3. Der Selbstversorger: Mein Gartenjahr by Wolf Dieter Storl (translates to "Self-Sustaining: My Year in Gardening"). This guy takes you through a year of organic gardening, and the book is split into seasons and those into months. Each month you’re reminded about what needs doing, what can be planted or sown, how you need to feed the soil, care for insect "helpers", and how to care for what you have in terms of produce you grow.
Congrats on the up coming book, and sounds great with the library. Reading how others do things always helps with developing how you can adapt to your area and situation. Keep up the great work.
3 books I like are aimed at permaculture. The complete book of edible landscaping, Gaia’s garden, and Edible Landscaping with a permaculture twist
The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery…Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow…The Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan –to name three. Really enjoying your channel and love the collab!
The three most useful books for me are Charles Dowding’s Veg Journal, How To Grow World Record Tomatoes by Charles H. Willber, Texas Organic Vegetable Gardening.
Eliot Coleman’s Winter Harvest Handbook was my bible for winter food and John Seymour’s Self Sufficiency started me on this path. Goodness me Huw, your contribution to this collaboration is streets ahead of the others (followed closely by Liz, of course). Articulate and professional as always
Morning, dropped over from Bythers Farm. Saw you helping Liz and enjoyed watching you.
Good luck with your book Huw …
I just want to ask you .. how many hours you read in a day ?!
Hi Huw! I also have a garden and my 3 favourite books about gardening/homesteading are 1) Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemenway; 2) Teaming with Microbes by Wayne Lewis; 3) Ringing Cedars of Russia series by Vladimir Megre (not quite about gardening, but about nature and more harmonic way of life, I personally found it very inspiring). Thank you for your wonderful and also very inspiring videos!
You gotta check out the apple lovers cookbook!! It is an american book as the apple varities are here not grown in the uk, but it goes over all about the different types and their flavor profile, what they are good used in and then it has a ton of amazing recipes. I have tried a bunch and am so impressed with this book!!
Can’t wait to get your book.
Hi Huw my books I have are 1. Allotment month by month by Alan Buckingham, a must just brilliant. 2. RHS Grow your own veg journal by Carol Klein brilliant yearly look back and I’ve added pages to the months. 3. The Allotment Cookbook by Pete Lawrence great for recipes as you harvest seasonally. But I do have another book I treasure which is Percy Throwers Encyclopedia of Gardening given to me by my best friend of 46 years and the book belonged to her dad who was a wonderful gardener and a special person to me. The book is great all black and white pictures/ drawings. As for whom I look up to Monty Don is my gardening hero. Cheers Jan ☀ 🌽
cant wait for your book. very exciting for you
