I live on the North-coast of Oregon… all maps say we are zone 9a, but we have cool summers, in fact this year our average temp has been in the sixty’s… I feel like some of my plants are stunted or are growing slow… anything I can do?

awesome video, i just started my own garden a month ago its been coming along nicely but a learning process. I enjoy watching educational videos! What would you suggest is the best for a desert? I like in the Coachella Valley so it gets quite hot and dry here. I just recently planted a Moringa tree and it seems to be doing well it just sprouted a week ago.

I think you might have missed sweet potatoes. And I would love to find out about what flowers can still be planted now in zone 9 & 10 (sunflower? Zinnia?)

Ha! Winter squash. Mine didn’t come up so I got a new packet and dropped them in the ground. Suddenly we had the miserable 111 day and I was worried the garden would die. Nope. Those butternuts came up that very week! And a stray chard seed from times past was next to them and came up, too. And now all thriving despite the heat.

What about in an 11a. My microclimate is 11a in San Diego. I live by the coast so the annual high only hits about 90 sometimes not even.our current highs are in the low 70s high 60s and was wondering if tomatoes and habaneros are viable for me in july. By mid July we should start hitting into the low 80s so they should be capable of germinating but it gets down into the 50s in November sometimes and high 40s in December so I just am not sure if these plants will ever fruit. I know many people just keep them outside during the winter since they might not die off since our annual low is generally somewhere between 41-45 but that doesnt seem worth it if they wont produce fruit this year. We haven’t had hot enough temps for them to germinate naturally outside here yet so I know a lot of people just start them with a warming tray indoors but I dont really want to do that for a couple of plants. Anyways I’m just conflicted but will probably just drop some seeds into a couple of pots next weekend and see what happens.

In starting these crops (cantaloupe melons, acorn squash swiss chard, etc.) in June, should I start from seed or seedlings?
    I am a beginner gardener!

    It was 112 yesterday

  22. Mirandomness on August 30, 2021 at 1:33 am

Southern/black eyed peas are still good right now. (I’m in Zone 9) Peppers and eggplants typically do okay in June as starts rather than seeds.
